Job Description
The Daily Beast is seeking talented, motivated, and dependable reporting interns to join the newsroom full time starting late April through August as part of the Cheat Sheet/breaking news team. Open to undergraduate juniors and seniors with light course loads, graduate students, and post-grads, the internship is an exciting opportunity for emerging journalists to learn how a newsroom works while gaining hands-on experience.
Duties will include writing and posting Cheat Sheet and express news articles, writing snappy article and SEO headlines, fixing style/grammatical errors, and making any changes requested by the editorial or production staff. Ideal candidates are flexible and quick writers with a strong sense of news judgment and ability to take initiative.
Qualifications
• Experience writing breaking news from a previous internship or campus publication
• A voracious news diet and appetite for current affairs, pop culture, and internet trends
• Prior knowledge of web publishing and using a content management system
• Comfort meeting daily deadlines
This paid internship will run from late April through early August, give or take a week, and is generally Monday-Friday but some nights and one weekend day may be required. The ideal candidate will be passionate about mentorship, and a true technical generalist. We are looking for a technologist who can lead system design and architecture conversations, but who can also flex into devops and is at least curious about native iOS and Android engineering. Detailed, empathetic written and verbal communication is also critical to supporting this small team.
The Staff Software Engineer will report to the SVP, Engineering and collaborate closely with our full engineering team as well as cross-functional partners in product design, product management, data and analytics. The Engineering team is New York City-based with a flexible work from home policy. This position can also be fully remote within the US.
Responsibilities:
• Create and socialize a perspective about overall system architecture
• Work with the product and business teams to translate business requirements into plans that align with the overall architecture
• Work with the engineering team to establish, and ensure compliance with, consistent technical standards and processes (code reuse, refactoring, testing, linting)
• Manage the direction of technical implementation across projects with an eye to consistency and maintainability
• Support the technical growth of team members through code review, pair programming, and architecture design documentation
• Lead investigation into, and drive alignment around, which tech is used where (open source packages, frameworks, test runners, data stores, logging, etc.)
