The Chattanooga Times Free Press is seeking a digital producer and journalist who will be part of a team of five that manages the newspaper's digital content across a number of platforms to ensure that our vital journalism is available and engaging for our online audiences.
The job includes social media and website management, producing digital content, writing and adjusting headlines to be... SEO-friendly and adding multimedia to stories as well as handling breaking news.
At the Times Free Press, digital producers are journalists who:
are responsible on a daily basis for posting stories and general coverage from our reporters on the website with the idea of being timely and competitive and increasing page views, engagement and the amount of time readers spend on timesfreepress.com.
produce and/or post interactive features, maps, graphics, photo galleries, listicle and video.
must have an engaging social media voice and be competent in publishing the newspaper's stories across various social media platforms in a way that feels timely and lively and be comfortable engaging with readers online.
work with editors and reporters across all sections of the newsroom to coordinate digital coverage; help formulate ideas for digital-only content; and turn a breaking news story on a tight deadline.
function as the last line of defense in ensuring that our content is accurate and grammatically sound before being posted on our website and on social media channels.
have strong news judgment and are open to learning new things amidst an ever changing digital landscape.
Video and multimedia skills are a plus.
The ideal candidate would be able to work a Monday-Friday 12 - 8 p.m. shift. The position is on-site Tuesdays and Wednesdays and remote Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Both editorial pages are published seven days a week. The Times Free Press, unique in offering dual, independent and opposing editorial pages, is committed to providing readers a broad range of political commentary and reflections on issues of the day.
The Times page editor conducts original reporting and research for editorials based on local, state and national news; closely follows the latest news and developments; is able to develop sources across the community; handles social media; participates in public speaking events as requested; and assists with assembling contributed and syndicated material for the daily and Sunday Chattanooga Times opinion page.
Strong reporting and writing skills are essential; previous experience as an editorial/opinion writer is a must. Writing should reflect versatility, clear thinking and strong, persuasive and engaging language. We are looking for a journalist who is passionate about identifying and explaining problems and solutions to challenges facing the community, region and state, someone who values collaboration, is flexible and open to discussion and debate, and is fearless about challenging the status quo. Ideal candidates would have at least five years of experience in reporting and writing; have an understanding of municipal and state government; be skilled in the use of social media to build an audience and reach and engage readers. It is essential that the candidate be able to build and cultivate relationships within the newsroom and community at large.

• Basic knowledge of Associated Press style and the ability to copy edit.
• Strong written, verbal and problem-solving skills.
• Capability to collaborate closely with other designers and editors.
• Knowledge of Adobe InDesign, with proficiency in Photoshop. Illustrator is a plus.
• Must be able to take art direction.
Schedule: This position will include evenings and weekend work. This is not a remote position.
Experience: Recent college graduates with proven ability and strong portfolios will be considered. Two years of experience in publication design is preferred.
