The Department of Extension within the College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources (CAHNR) is seeing applicants for an Assistant/Associate Extension Educator in Land Use Planning and Climate Resilience. We seek an individual whose professional skills and abilities can be applied to (1) the training and support of professional and volunteer local land use decision-makers... and (2) providing support to communities in climate resiliency planning. This position will be a core faculty member in the award-winning Center for Land Use Education and Research (CLEAR), be a part of the CLEAR Land & Climate Program Team, and contribute to the Center’s mission of supporting communities in balancing growth and natural resource protection. The ideal candidate will have expertise in translational outreach programming in the areas of local land use planning, land use commissioner roles and responsibilities, and climate resiliency at the community level. The candidate will lead CLEAR’s Land Use Academy training program for land use commissioners, contribute to the Climate Corps life transformative education (LTE) program for undergraduates, and contribute to Adapt CT, a partnership of CLEAR and CT Sea Grant. The position will be based in the Department of Extension. There are also opportunities to collaborate with municipalities, state and federal government agencies, the CT Bar Association, the CT Chapter of the American Planning Association, the CT Association of Inland Wetland Commissioners, and across UConn through the Connecticut Sea Grant and the Connecticut Institute of Water Resources.
The Department of Extension in the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources works collaboratively with partners in all 169 municipalities across Connecticut, throughout the northeast region, and beyond. It is a non-tenuring unit with 35 faculty and 30 program and administrative staff. Additional grant-specific program personnel assist to solve problems and enhance the well-being of our state citizens where they live, work, and learn. Work carried out by the Department constitutes the majority of the UConn Extension System. Faculty and staff conduct activities through eight county/community-based offices and may be co-located with additional community/agency-based working partners when applicable.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Land Use Academy - The successful applicant will provide leadership to CLEAR’s long-standing Land Use Academy program, which has been the primary provider of basic and advanced land use commissioner training in CT for over 2 decades. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing innovative, effective, and engaging approaches to expand both the topics and accessibility of this training to address new state-mandated training requirements. The incumbent will also build, maintain, and expand collaborations with land use stakeholders, including, but not limited to, the CT Office of Policy and Management, Connecticut Conference of Municipalities (CCM), Connecticut Council of Small Towns (COST), councils of government (COGs), CT Bar Association, CT Chapter of the American Planning Association, CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), and others.
• Adapt CT - The successful applicant will develop and deliver impactful extension programs and provide co-leadership to Adapt CT, a collaboration between CLEAR and CT Sea Grant that facilitates the exchange of information on local climate adaptation and resiliency between municipalities, researchers, and other professionals; provides tools and technical assistance to communities; and has the option to help teach and engage undergraduate students in community climate resiliency efforts through the award-winning Climate Corps program.
• The successful applicant will be expected to seek external funding to enhance extension programs. Activities will also include building collaborative, interdisciplinary networks between UConn CLEAR, other extension educators, and academic faculty.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• An earned Master’s degree in land use planning, environmental management, environmental sciences, or related discipline and three years of on the ground experience in local land use planning for hire at the Assistant Extension Educator level.
• An earned Master's degree in land use planning, environmental management, environmental sciences, or related discipline and five or more years of experience on the ground experience in local land use planning for consideration at the Associate Extension Educator level.
• Understanding and awareness of the local impacts of climate change and potential adaptation solutions.
• Experience obtaining and managing competitive grants.
• Demonstrated superior oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Active AICP Certification.
• Knowledge and understanding of Geographic Information Systems(GIS)/geospatial technologies.
• Local land use planning experience in Connecticut.
• Demonstrated expertise in outreach activities and program planning.
• Expertise and experience in dealing with the local impacts of climate change, preferably in New England and including impacts on vulnerable populations.
• A history of funding from state and/or federal agencies.
• A record of publishing extension and peer-reviewed research.

APPOINTMENT TERMS
This is a full-time, 11-month renewable, non-tenure track faculty position. This position is located at the Middlesex County Extension Center in Haddam, CT. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will work in collaboration with federal and state agencies, municipal entities, and communities, along with partner organizations, to:
• Partner with the UConn Center for Land Use Education and Research (CLEAR) on the Climate Adaptation Academy and AdaptCT website – a partnership of CTSG and CLEAR to:
• Foster and improve exchanges of knowledge to better identify the diverse needs of communities, including their response to increasing threats to coastal resources associated with climate change, and to increase the public’s understanding of changing conditions, hazards, and related impacts.
• Support the development of information, tools, and technical support that address nature-based approaches to resilience and related socioeconomic considerations.
• Work with communities to utilize actionable science to advance collaborative and comprehensive planning and implement adaptive management strategies that adjust to changing needs.
• Work with communities and partners to explore and support diversification, sustainability, and social equity within nature-based approaches to resilience.
• Topics of particular interest include:
• Living shoreline and nature-based solutions best practices.
• Habitat restoration/resilience.
• Salt Marsh migration and restoration, including ecosystem services, policy, and conservation opportunities.
• Riparian buffers in collaboration with UConn CLEAR.
• Stormwater management in collaboration with UConn CLEAR.
The successful candidate will work with other faculty, staff, and partner organizations in a multidisciplinary team environment to create and deliver audience-appropriate programs and related materials. Set up program sites and meeting rooms for the presentation of programs that could include transporting, lifting, and moving boxes of educational and/or program materials as well as tables, chairs, etc. as needed. The position will require regular visits to program site locations throughout the state with a focus on coastal communities requiring in-state and periodic out-of-state travel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Earned Master’s degree or an equivalent in coastal ecology, natural/marine resources, coastal management, resilience, adaptive management, coastal oceanography/engineering, environmental/marine policy, planning, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or another relevant field.
• Minimum of two years of experience working with/for local governments, non-profits/NGOs, or other professional or community organizations in the field of nature-based approaches to resilience, adaptive management, planning, environmental justice, and/or adult education.
• Demonstrated interest/experience with coastal ecology/habitat management/nature-based approaches to resilience.
• Demonstrated superior communication (both public speaking and writing) and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will:
• Coordinate and collaborate with the other four Extension professionals in CT and NY to efficiently and effectively achieve the goals of the LISS Sustainable and Resilient Communities five-year work plan.
• Develop an understanding of the local landscape and establish relationships with local community members and stakeholders, including grassroots leaders, state/local officials, regional planning organizations, non-profits, and LISS staff, among others.
• Develop and provide educational resources and technical support to communities and professionals tasked with providing guidance and increasing capacity for municipalities to achieve sustainability and resilience goals under the LISS Comprehensive Conservation Management Plan (CCMP), and at times, customizing them as appropriate for the region.
• Provide technical assistance related to planning tools designed to enhance sustainability and resilience.
• Promote and encourage partnerships and collaborations both within and between the states of CT and NY in the Long Island Sound watershed.
• Assist communities with implementing/understanding existing sustainability and resilience programs such as the FEMA Community Rating System and hazard mitigation grants, CT’s GC3, Sustainable CT, and other programs that could benefit from broader implementation.
• Provide guidance and training to communities related to planning and permitting processes to achieve sustainability and resilience goals and also help them access funding/grants for implementation (e.g., required Hazard Mitigation Plans, Emergency Operations/Management Plans, and related coastal management plans as appropriate).
• Produce and circulate electronic newsletters regularly and assist with content creation/management for an online resource hub/interactive web-based tool.
• Provide support for regional networks of local governments working towards sustainability and resilience.
• Create a feedback loop with state and LISS stakeholders to provide information on what communities are doing to implement programs and identify gaps in understanding, resources, and tools that need to be addressed.
• Actively incorporate Environmental Justice and Equity best practices.
• Track and report progress against program goals.
• Work with researchers to translate their research results regarding climate change impacts into a format/tool usable by communities.
• Provide researchers with stakeholder needs regarding resilience for potential research projects.
• Collaborate with other faculty, staff, and partner organizations in a multidisciplinary team environment to create and deliver audience-appropriate program materials.
