Job Summary
This position is a full-time postdoctoral researcher position in the UMass Molecular Microbial Ecology Lab, with the intention of studying the microbial traits associated with growth and resource acquisition from necromass biomolecules in soils and soil communities. Our long-term goal is to better predict necromass persistence. Persistent SOM promotes soil health and limits soil greenhouse gas emissions. Understanding the mechanisms of SOM formation and persistence will improve climate forecasting and soil regeneration and management efforts. The work that this candidate conducts will, for the first time, separately query the major necromass biomolecules carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and proteins, with integrated microbial genetic, metabolic, genomic, and trait-based insights into the controls of necromass persistence.
The candidate will lead a lab incubation experiment using model soils and collect and analyze data including total C mineralized to CO2, microbial biomass, mineral associated organic matter, and necromass to quantify the relative contribution of clays and pore sizes in microbial growth. They will also perform metabarcoding and metagenomics to reveal the microbial communities and metabolisms that form on different necromass, and 18O-water stable isotope probing (SIP) metaproteomics (Protein-SIP) will reveal traits associated with necromass biomolecule decomposition under varying nutrient bioavailabilities. This work will require work with multivariate statistics and bioinformatics, and the candidate will be expected to lead the development of the data analysis and synthesis.
The candidate’s work is part of a collaborative effort, and they will have the opportunity to advise on cutting edge soil metaproteomics and Protein-SIP analyses to define microbial carbon transformations, including localization of processes in a secretome analysis. Key innovations in our work will also include enzyme kinetics specific to soil carbohydrate, lipid, nucleic acid and protein degradation, and sorption analyses to differentiate biotic versus abiotic routes to organic matter mineral associations. The candidate will also advise our modeling collaborators on incorporating these elements into ecosystem models.
Essential Functions
Examples of duties:
• Define the mineral characteristics and microbial traits that drive necromass decomposition using laboratory model soil microcosms.
• Author manuscripts and reports based on research conducted, with extensive feedback on writing from the PI and other lab members, as well as contribute code to lab github.
• Mentor undergraduate students, masters students, and graduate students informally as well as formally by guiding them in their research and professional development.
• Contribute to positive and enriching lab culture, including participating in journal clubs and group meetings, contributing to in person and online conversations on lab Slack, and model professional skills including courage, persistence, and collaboration.
Other Functions
• Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.
• Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
• Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
• Ph.D. in Microbiology, Microbial Ecology, or a related field.
• Proficiency in statistics and bioinformatics with knowledge of at least one programming language which should include R.
• Expertise in molecular techniques including DNA or RNA sequencing and molecular microbial ecology such as metagenomics or transcriptomics data analysis.
Work Schedule
• Generally, work should be conducted between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday – Friday, to ensure a sense of community and collaboration between lab members. However, schedule can be flexible and sometimes may need to be depending on the demands of the research.
Salary Information
• Salary $52,024; commensurate upon experience.
Special Instructions to Applicants
Along with the application, please submit a resume, cover letter and contact information for three (3) professional references. The search will remain open until a suitable candidate has been identified.
As part of a commitment to their own multicultural community, we seek an individual with a demonstrated commitment to diversity and one who will understand and embrace university initiatives and aspirations. (https://www.cns.umass.edu/diversity-equity-inclusion)

Job Summary
The Stephens Lab (https://www.bio.umass.edu/biology/stephens/home) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is recruiting a Senior Research Fellow. The Stephens lab is a new lab and studies the mechanical and shape properties of the cell nucleus and how these properties affect major nuclear functions such as genome organization, DNA damage, compartmentalization, and transcription. Abnormal nuclear shape has been used as diagnostic and prognostic marker for human disease such as cancer for nearly a century without understanding how these nuclear abnormal deformations occur and what their real consequences are to cell function.
The responsibilities of the Senior Research Fellow include working closely with the PI to establish mechanisms quantitatively measuring force response and nuclear morphology in an automated fashion. One goal will be to write a new program in LabView or Python to track micropipette tips and nucleus deformation to measure force response of nuclei under micromanipulation. The second goal will be to generate a machine learning algorithm for segmenting and measuring nuclei, with the capacity to discern normally and abnormally shaped nuclei. It is essential that the Senior Research Fellow be well-versed in microscopy and image analysis for both of the major goals. The Senior Research Fellow will then use these tools to perform experiments on cells using micromanipulation and microscopy to discern the mechanical role of chromatin in the nucleus and how it affects major nuclear functions.
Essential Functions
Examples of duties:
• Develop a new analysis program for tracking micropipette tips and nuclei strain during micromanipulation (preferably in LabView or Python)
• Develop a pipeline for automated microscope image segmentation of nuclei using various available machine learning algorithms
• Preparation of cells for imaging
• Microscopy imaging and image analysis of cell samples on a daily basis
• Secondary role in maintaining cell cultures in conjunction with the Lab Manager
• PhD in Biology or related field.
• At least 5 years of post doc experience.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
• Coding in Python (or other languages).
• Well-versed in microscopy imaging and analysis.
• Knowledge of cell culture.
• Molecular Biology skills (DNA/RNA purification, Western blots, Immunofluorescence).
• Educated in Physics and/or Engineering.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
• Typical lab environment.
Additional Details
• This position is for one year with the potential of a reappointment depending on job performance and available funding.
Work Schedule
• Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm.
• Hours may vary.
Salary Information
Salary will commensurate with experience.
Special Instructions to Applicants
Submit a letter of application, resume and contact information for three professional references. Apply by July 17, 2020 in order to ensure priority consideration. Search may remain open until a suitable candidate pool has been identified.

Job Summary
The Senner Lab in the Department of Environmental Conservation at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking to hire one seasonal field technician to assist with research on the stopover ecology of the long-distance migratory shorebird the Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) on the coast of South Carolina. Building off the recent discovery that South Carolina hosts the largest known nocturnal roost for the species, the project is focused on better understanding how Whimbrel select roosting and foraging sites and how those choices influence their entire annual cycle. The field technician will assist with all aspects of fieldwork — including capturing and tagging Whimbrel, as well as carrying out focal foraging observations and nocturnal roost surveys — with opportunities for learning research skills throughout the season. Candidates that identify with groups currently underrepresented in wildlife ecology and conservation are encouraged to apply. This is a temporary, unbenefited position.
Essential Functions
• Nocturnal capture, banding, and tagging of Whimbrel; banding and tagging captured individuals with field-readable leg flags and GPS transmitters.
• Daily data collection from VHF antenna base stations to download GPS data from tagged individuals.
• Regular maintenance and monitoring of semi-permanent VHF antenna base stations.
• Conducting foraging habitat quality assessments using a combination of remote sensing and ground-based surveys.
• Daily trips to barrier islands, sandbars, salt marsh creeks, shell rakes, and beaches on foot and using motorboats and kayaks.
• Regular maintenance of boats and work vehicles.
Other Functions
• Occasional camping in hot, humid, sandy, buggy conditions.
• Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.
• Work in partnership with colleagues within the College of Natural Sciences (CNS) community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
• Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
• Interest in ecology, field biology, migration, animal movement tracking, and/or related fields.
• Comfort in and on the water, including wading in salt water and quickly getting in and out of motorboats. Experience driving boats is not required, but technician will be expected to assist boat captain with all aspects of boat transportation, safety, and maintenance. Field boat is a 16ft. Boston Whaler, driven from a console.
• Strong work ethic, eagerness to learn fieldwork and research methods, and ability to work well on a team and independently in challenging physical conditions and sometimes stressful scenarios. Applicant must be adaptable, communicative, cooperative, and detail oriented.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
• Previous experience with outdoor fieldwork and following research protocols.
• Previous experience banding shorebirds not required, but any experience handling birds or participating in bird capture and banding is a plus.
• Familiarity with (or willingness to learn) methods for boating, landing, and anchoring in tidal ocean and salt marsh environments.
• Familiarity with South Carolina/Georgia coast or similar intertidal saltmarsh habitats.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
This position requires working in humid, subtropical conditions – including bright sun, intense heat, biting insects, rain, and walking long distances on soft sand and mud.
Additional Details
Field lodging, transportation, meals, and all necessary equipment will be provided.
Work Schedule
• This project requires flexibility to work at various times of day throughout the season; work hours during bird trapping efforts take place from late afternoon to after dark, while habitat survey efforts take place from early morning until afternoon.
• This is a temporary, unbenefited position (3/27/2023 – 6/02/2023).
Salary Information
• $15.00/hour
• Temporary position: 03/27/23 - 06/02/23

Job Description
The Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a full-time, 12 month, Extension faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. We are looking for a candidate who will develop an integrated program in urban agriculture involving Extension, teaching, and research.
Urban agriculture encompasses a wide range of skills and expertise that includes, but is not limited to, horticulture, indoor production, environmental remediation, soil health, community and urban development, nutrition, and food systems. A new faculty member would link efforts in these areas in Stockbridge School of Agriculture, the Center for Agriculture, Food & the Environment, and the University in an urban agriculture and food systems program. They will collaborate with other faculty members in nationally-recognized sustainability efforts across campus, particularly in the School of Earth and Sustainability. They will work closely with Extension Educators serving an audience of Urban Agriculture practitioners through a multi-disciplinary outreach and education program. The incumbent will also collaborate with stakeholders in government and non-government agencies to expand and develop programs in food production for new and underserved urban audiences. A primary role will be to generate and disseminate research-based information that can be used to empower urban entrepreneurs and mission-driven organizations to grow healthy local food.
Stockbridge School has an excellent undergraduate program, Sustainable Food & Farming, both on campus and online. Students increasingly want to study urban horticulture and emerging methods for urban food production. The new faculty member will have the opportunity to modify and develop courses in urban horticulture and food systems in Stockbridge for both campus and online programs, and guide students in related internships.
Requirements
An MS with five (5) years experience is required, and a PhD preferred, in horticulture, plant science, urban agriculture, or closely related fields. Experience in Extension or public outreach required. The candidate is expected to demonstrate the ability to teach undergraduates and fully engage in public education. The successful candidate must acquire extra-mural funding to support research and Extension programs.
Additional Information
Review of applicants will begin November 17, 2022 and may continue until the ideal candidate is identified.
Expected start date of this position is July 15, 2023.

Along with the application, please submit a (1) cover letter, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) statement of research interests, (4) statement of teaching philosophy, (5) statement of Extension philosophy, (6) contact information for three professional references, and a (7) Statement of Contribution to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (see below). The department values candidates who have experience working in settings with students from diverse backgrounds, and who possess a strong commitment to contributing to the success of historically underrepresented groups. Questions can be directed to the search committee chair, Dr. Daniel Cooley (dcooley@umass.edu).
