In partnership with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), the Oberlin-UNITAR Immersive English Program is purposefully designed for students to learn English in order to use English to learn. Students in the eight-week program will take five communicative, task-based courses: Reading and Vocabulary, Writing and Grammar, Listening and Speaking, Culture in Context, and English Conversation Lunch Tables, with each course’s language instruction thematically aligned with the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals to include topics related to inclusive and equitable education, food and agriculture, health and wellbeing, and climate change and sustainability.
Classroom instruction will be supported and enhanced each day through peer mentoring, tutoring, and guest lectures, weekly film viewings, live musical performances, museum visits, cooking classes, community service and activities, including outings to local destinations such as the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame, Cedar Point, Crushers Baseball, and Findley State Park.
Responsibilities
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages in an immersive, residential, eight-week program elevating the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
Essential Job Functions
• Create and maintain engaging learning environments in the classroom and in co-curricular activities
• Teach reading and vocabulary, listening and speaking, grammar and writing, culture and context, and conversational lunch tables course
• Design and conduct lessons based on communicative, task-based TESOL language pedagog
• Assess, document, and provide daily feedback of students’ progress toward learning objectives
• Differentiate instruction to provide effective learning possibilities that address individual needs and provide targeted intervention when necessary
• Hold office hours each week outside of regularly scheduled class times
• Devote time to cultural or co-curricular engagement with students including supervision of excursions on some evenings and weekends
• Attend a curriculum orientation for lesson development prior to the program start date and ongoing weekly team meetings
• Assist with student arrival, orientation, and departure
• Follow Oberlin-established health and safety protocols
Required Qualifications
• M.A. or M.Ed. in TESOL, TEFL, TESL, or related fields
• Two or more years of experience teaching English Language Learners, preferably in a higher education setting
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching across a range of language proficiency levels in all language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, vocabulary, culture)
• Experience working collaboratively and effectively with students, faculty, administrators, support staff, and outside entities both domestically and internationally
