USA Cycling officials are responsible for safety and fairness, judging, and rule enforcement at sanctioned cycling races. Judges and referees, under the supervision of a Chief Referee and Chief Judge, typically work a variety of cycling events including road races, criterium and circuit races, time trials, stage races, track races, cyclocross, and mountain bike events.

Over 150 cycling events are held in the district each year. Assignments include: judging and scoring, supervising the repair pit, timer, starter, camera operator, and other duties as needed. Additional training and support are available through USA Cycling and NCNCA should you wish to to become a Moto Referee, Chief Referee, Chief Judge, or work at higher level national cycling events. All officials are licensed through USA Cycling, the sanctioning body for competitive bicycle racing in the United States.

To become a USA Cycling official, an official’s training class and passing the knowledge test afterwards is required. In addition, a background check, an online sexual abuse and harassment training course, and Concussion and Sudden Cardiac Arrest training are also required. All training courses are available online and are free.

Cycling officials work as independent contractors and are assigned races by the Chief Referee of the race based on availability and experience level. You will generally have the choice of working as much or as little as you like.

Mentoring of new officials is provided. Races are typically held on weekends throughout most of the year. Officials are paid a modest daily rate, overtime if required, reimbursed for mileage, hotel room(s) for officials coming from a distance, and per diem costs for multi-day races. Officials are paid at the conclusion of the event worked. Liability insurance is provided through USA Cycling.

All backgrounds and experience levels are encouraged to apply!
