AREN at UTA
The undergraduate Architectural Engineering (AREN) program at UTA was established in Fall 2015 in the Civil Engineering Department and accredited by ABET in 2019. The main objective of the AREN program is to educate students to engineer buildings as part of team with general focus on building structure, mechanical, electrical systems, and construction management. After the successful start of the new program, enrollment has continuously grown to around 200 students in Fall 2022. Current enrollment represents a diversely distributed population. Faculty in the program have been involved in interdisciplinary communities, i.e., IEA EBC Annex 79, ACM, ASCE, ASHRAE, and IBPSA. In April 2022, UTA AREN successfully hosted ASCE Forum event (link), "Mega City 2070: The Future Vision of Urban Infrastructure".
The UTA AREN program also offers a graduate program in Smart and Sustainable Building. This research area has secured several grants from NSF, USDOT, TxDOT, and UT system. The program has supported undergraduate/graduate students in various research projects. This new area will create a variety of innovative research themes such as smart and sustainable buildings and human building interaction and should be supported with a new faculty's unique and novel research interests to promote better education and research programs at UTA.
Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area is the fourth largest metroplex and the fastest growing area in the U.S. The area is experiencing exponential growth which is having a huge impact on energy efficiency and environmental impacts from the building sector. Our program will mitigate the competency gap of advanced building technologies and graduate education at UTA. Our students will be trained well when entering the workforce by applying advanced knowledges and skills immediately.

Dean of the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs
The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) invites applications, expressions of interest, and nominations of candidates in its search for its next dean of the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs (CAPPA). As an interdisciplinary college, CAPPA brings together the disciplines of architecture, interior design... landscape architecture, planning, public administration, and public policy to impact the communities in which we live. The new dean will have the opportunity to develop and articulate a strategic vision for CAPPA.
Located in the heart of the thriving Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metroplex, UTA is a comprehensive teaching, research, and public service institution which fosters a strong interdisciplinary focus across the university. A Carnegie Doctoral University-Very High Research (R1), Texas Tier I, Hispanic-Serving (HSI) and Asian American, Native American, and Pacific Islander Institution (AANAPISI), UTA was first in Texas and tied for third among national universities for its undergraduate ethnic diversity index and is a top veteran-friendly institution.
CAPPA re-imagines the built environment: the design of buildings, their interiors, and landscapes, while addressing sustainability, public policy, and equity. Students are encouraged to learn from a variety of fields while tackling complex urban and rural problems with new perspectives shared through partnerships across campus, other universities, industry partners, architecture firms, nonprofits, and community partners.
Reporting to the provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, the dean serves as the chief academic officer for CAPPA and is responsible for strategic, programmatic, and financial operations. As UTA’s new senior leadership team leads the institution into its exciting future, the dean will lead CAPPA in its support of UTA’s central mission to promote and achieve academic excellence as it works to become one of the nation’s most inclusive and impactful research universities. The dean will support and sustain a highly effective work environment and a culture of inclusion and collaboration within CAPPA and among UTA’s other schools and colleges.
The dean will have considerable administrative experience in a highly complex research institution, a collaborative and visionary leadership style, the highest standards of personal ethics and integrity, and a strong record of research and scholarly accomplishment, and an understanding of the variety of creative endeavors and research initiatives that span academic disciplines at a comprehensive university. The dean should possess a strong working knowledge of the academic enterprises within higher education and have a deep appreciation for how research intersects with the educational mission of a university that serves a diverse, large urban population. The successful candidate will be a relationship-builder who can promote interdisciplinary collaboration and strengthen CAPPA’s contribution to UTA and the surrounding communities.
The ideal candidate will hold a terminal degree from an accredited institution in an academic discipline within CAPPA, a record of distinguished research/scholarship and teaching that would support appointment as a tenured full professor at UTA, and experience in an administrative leadership position within higher education.
