Madica is a 12-18 month structured investment program for pre-seed stage African startups - especially those that receive a disproportionately small share of venture funding, such as those led by women or by local founders or those that operate outside well-established tech hubs. Madica was born out of the need to empower mission-driven founders by democratizing access to... world-class company building support, which is available today only to a few well-networked entrepreneurs.

We invest up to $200,000 in participating companies at the beginning of their journey so they can hire the right team and focus on building the business. We complement this with programmatic support including access to hands-on mentorship by exceptional founders and operators, training and coaching on company building by industry specialists, and targeted interactions with prospective investors to ensure that later-stage capital is available as companies grow.

Madica was launched by Flourish Ventures, a global venture firm that backs disruptive technology companies whose entrepreneurs seek to redefine the financial services sector and whose innovations help people achieve financial health and prosperit. We are uniquely positioned to support these early-stage entrepreneurs: we have access to capital, networks, and an extensive knowledge base from our experience serving entrepreneurs across the globe – and the credibility in Africa to pull this off.

Position Summary:
We are seeking a Head of Communications and Community based in Africa.

As Head of Communications and Community, you will be a hands-on strategic communicator and storyteller who will help spread the word about Madica’s work and mission. You will be responsible for telling the Madica story, including the founders we support, and ensuring Madica’s venture building resources are extended to as many African founders as possible. You will create and share high quality content, and connect with our key audiences through media outreach, announcements, editorial placements, events and speaking opportunities.

Our ideal candidate has exceptional oral and written communication skills and is able to develop engaging content both for internal and external audiences. You already have significant experience creating and curating content for web and social media e.g. as a podcast host or writer. You are also a ‘people person’ with great customer service skills and the ability to moderate online and offline conversations with our community.

To be truly successful in this role, you would need to care deeply about helping underrepresented founders succeed, already have a track-record of working within the industry and have a strong ability to identify content opportunities, be passionate about telling founder stories, and hold the deep belief that anything is possible with our powers combined.

Responsibilities:
• Develop and execute an on-going strategic communications plan, partnering with internal stakeholders and external agencies as required, to drive brand and business metrics;
• Use communications strategies to connect with key audiences, build Madica’s image, drive interest in our investment program and our portfolio companies;
• Partner with colleagues, freelancers and agencies to create content and thought leadership pieces in a variety of formats (articles, videos, podcasts, infographics);
• Partner with colleagues to research and understand the needs of Madica founders and the broader African early stage startup ecosystem, and design new content to meet them through various channels;
• Develop publications such as newsletters, releases, email announcements, planned publications, video and special projects;
• Manage Social Media campaigns for various social media platforms to align with marketing strategies;
• Monitor media coverage and ensure appropriate responses;
• Ensure websites, social media, and other digital channels are aligned to PR efforts and are up to date with news releases, articles, etc.;
• Develop and maintain contacts with media members, influencers and community leaders;
• Evaluate and identify events that we should be attending/sponsoring to reach our target audiences. Determine our presence and manage logistics;
• Ensure all leads are captured, uploaded to our CRM system and followed-up on in a timely manner; evaluate the quality of the event and determine if we should invest again.

Education, Experience and Requirements:
• Passion for African startups and extensive experience working in the African startup ecosystem as a product marketer, content or digital marketer, producer, media executive or PR/communcations manager;
• Evidence of consistent track record of content creation;
• Strong execution and program management skills;
• Evidence of strong community-building skills;
• Hands on experience with social media platforms and social media marketing for brands;
• Passion for creating and executing on strategy with ability to think analytically, understand metrics and adjust strategy accordingly;
• Highly structured yet flexible in a dynamic environment;
• Exceptional research, writing, editing, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
• Strong communicator, able to talk/share internally and externally about what Madica is building, especially in writing and presenting before groups of all sizes;
• Preference for candidates with established networks and credibility with African founders and investors;
• High-energy and independent self-starter, entrepreneurial spirit, and great teammate;
• Fluency in French preferred but not required;
• Comfort with working in a highly collaborative, global team.

What success looks like

Successes in your first 3 months include
• Take the time and learn the ins and outs of our data warehouse and dashboards. Investigate how data is being logged in our systems and what existing data pipelines exist across our two data warehouses (Postgres and Redshift).
• Evaluate existing dashboards, data quality, and pipelines and identify gaps.
• Get introduced to the Product and Engineering team and their bi-weekly sprint processes. At this point you are mostly observing the dynamics and taking on tasks by the team, while building a partnership and exploring support opportunities.

In your first 6 months
• Based on your initial exposure to our data stack, you have already built several improvements based on the gaps you’ve identified. You are able to manage the flow of data across the stack. You have extended our system capabilities as needed and have improved efficiency and simplicity of shared tools and libraries.
• You are deeply embedded in how we set up data logging and are able to manage and successfully execute on data requirements from teams across the company (e.g. Engineering, Product, CVML, Data Science, Marketing, Commercial).
• You proactively develop technical methodologies or tools which can solve important classes of problems. You can evangelize these methodologies and tools to other data scientists and engineers to scale multiple people.

In your first 12 months
• You are the company expert in our data, infrastructure, and technical architecture, and are actively involved in product and business operations to either improve existing data tools or suggest new methodologies to accelerate team execution, including influencing data best practices.
• You drive scalable solutions across teams.
• You are able to solve challenging technical problems faced by multiple teams and provide significant technical advice to newer or less-technical analysts
