Job Description
The Missouri Agricultural Experiment station (MOAES) seek qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Director of Livestock at the Central Missouri Research, Extension, and Educational Center (CM-REEC).
The CM-REEC Livestock center is composed of three facilities, the University of Missouri (MU) Beef Research and Teaching Farm, MU Feed Mill, and the MU Foremost Dairy. There are approximately 30 individuals employed full – and part-time under the purview of the Assistant Director for Livestock. These facilities generate more than $1.5m in economic activity each year and are all located in and around Columbia, Missouri.
Responsibilities And Duties
This position will report to the CM-REEC Director and oversee the day-to-day operations that will include but not be limited to the following:
• Supervise staff; interview, select, and evaluate performance of support staff. Ensure that faculty and staff needs are met for successful research, education, and Extension programs.
• Assist the CM-REEC Director in creating and implementing a strategic plan to unite the facilities with a shared vision and establish a common set of values that reflect the Center community, while identifying goals that will unite the faculty and staff.
• In cooperation with MU Extension, AES leadership and faculty, coordinate and conduct Field Days, workshops, training sessions, tours, and other events in support of agricultural producers and educational programs about food, agriculture and natural resources; Develop community relationships and partnerships by actively pursuing events to encourage community interactions and involvement to enhance Center visibility and presence at functions; Work with CAFNR Communications to successfully disseminate information from the Center through various formats including social media.
• Assist the Director of CM-REEC in organizing an advisory committee (10-12 members) that acts as an advocacy group for the Center, MU and CAFNR, in general (Note: Appointments will be made by the AES Director).
• Work closely with campus faculty and stakeholders to ensure that facilities and resources are available that advance the research, education, and Extension missions of the University. Work closely with state and regional commodity groups and other state agricultural agencies to bring financial and other resource support to Center faculty and facilities.
• MU Beef Research and Teaching Farm; work with researchers and instructors to schedule trials and teaching activities, interact with industry groups for feeding trials, and manage the day-to-day operations.
• MU Feed Mill; provides feed and research diets for MU Beef Research and Teaching Farm, MU Foremost Dairy, MU Swine Research Complex as well as other swine research and teaching facilities, poultry research facilities, MU Equine Center and commercial customers external to MU.
• MU Foremost Dairy; research, teaching, and community outreach is an important part of this facility. More than 200 cows are milked on the farm. Hundreds of students, including undergraduates and students in the Veterinary Medicine program learn on the farm each year. The Missouri Agricultural Experiment station (MOAES) seek qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Director of Livestock at the Central Missouri Research, Extension, and Educational Center (CM-REEC).
The CM-REEC Livestock center is composed of three facilities, the University of Missouri (MU) Beef Research and Teaching Farm, MU Feed Mill, and the MU Foremost Dairy. There are approximately 30 individuals employed full – and part-time under the purview of the Assistant Director for Livestock. These facilities generate more than $1.5m in economic activity each year and are all located in and around Columbia, Missouri.
Responsibilities And Duties
This position will report to the CM-REEC Director and oversee the day-to-day operations that will include but not be limited to the following:
• Supervise staff; interview, select, and evaluate performance of support staff. Ensure that faculty and staff needs are met for successful research, education, and Extension programs.
• Assist the CM-REEC Director in creating and implementing a strategic plan to unite the facilities with a shared vision and establish a common set of values that reflect the Center community, while identifying goals that will unite the faculty and staff.
• In cooperation with MU Extension, AES leadership and faculty, coordinate and conduct Field Days, workshops, training sessions, tours, and other events in support of agricultural producers and educational programs about food, agriculture and natural resources; Develop community relationships and partnerships by actively pursuing events to encourage community interactions and involvement to enhance Center visibility and presence at functions; Work with CAFNR Communications to successfully disseminate information from the Center through various formats including social media.
• Assist the Director of CM-REEC in organizing an advisory committee (10-12 members) that acts as an advocacy group for the Center, MU and CAFNR, in general (Note: Appointments will be made by the AES Director).
• Work closely with campus faculty and stakeholders to ensure that facilities and resources are available that advance the research, education, and Extension missions of the University. Work closely with state and regional commodity groups and other state agricultural agencies to bring financial and other resource support to Center faculty and facilities.
• MU Beef Research and Teaching Farm; work with researchers and instructors to schedule trials and teaching activities, interact with industry groups for feeding trials, and manage the day-to-day operations.
• MU Feed Mill; provides feed and research diets for MU Beef Research and Teaching Farm, MU Foremost Dairy, MU Swine Research Complex as well as other swine research and teaching facilities, poultry research facilities, MU Equine Center and commercial customers external to MU.
• MU Foremost Dairy; research, teaching, and community outreach is an important part of this facility. More than 200 cows are milked on the farm. Hundreds of students, including undergraduates and students in the Veterinary Medicine program learn on the farm each year. Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: MS in an area of computational sciences or bioinformatics by the time of appointment.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual interested in joining a multidisciplinary computational genomics lab (https://elsiklab.missouri.edu/) to develop and implement software for genome analysis, annotation, and data management as part of ongoing genome database projects, including the Bovine Genome Database. The primary responsibilities for this position are to 1) design... and develop a relational database for genotype and phenotype data, along with a database front-end web application, as part of the Bovine Genome Database and 2) contribute to the development of data mining applications for genome annotation data using the InterMine genomic database warehouse system. Other responsibilities include formatting bioinformatics data, documenting code, developing user documentation and tutorials for genome databases, and training scientists to use genome databases.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: MS in an area of computational sciences or bioinformatics by the time of appointment.
Candidates Will Be Evaluated On
Experience in programming related to bioinformatics. Expertise in Python. Expertise in Javascript. Expertise in MySQL or another relational database management system. Ability/desire to rapidly learn other languages as needed. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong problem-solving skills. Ability to work both independently and in a team environment. Ability to multitask. Self-motivation. Experience in database and web application development. Experience working with genomic and genotypic data. Working knowledge of common bioinformatics tools and publicly available DNA sequence databases. Experience with Perl.
