Utah State Crime Lab-
The Utah Bureau of Forensic Services Laboratory System (aka, the State Crime Lab) was created by the Legislature to provide timely and comprehensive criminalistic services to criminal justice entities within the State of Utah. By statute (53-10-104), the laboratory shall: "(5) analyze evidence from crime scenes and crime-related incidents for criminal prosecution; (6) provide criminalistics laboratory services to federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, prosecuting attorneys' and agencies, and public defenders..."
Principal duties
• Perform scientific examination and analysis of biological evidence.
• Screening of biological fluids using serological techniques.
• Perform DNA analysis using Polymerase Chain Reaction/Short Tandem Repeats
(PCR/STR) based methods and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) methods.
• Produce technical reports based on findings
• Act as an expert witness in court of law.
Requirements
• BA/BS degree in a natural science.
• BA/BS degree must have included and successfully completed work in the
following clearly defined courses: Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry,
and Statistics/Population Genetics
• Must pass a comprehensive background investigation as well as a polygraph examination and drug test.
The Ideal Candidate
• Will have knowledge of forensic DNA principles, laboratory techniques and technology.
• Will have knowledge of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Short Tandem Repeat (STR) analysis, and capillary electrophoresis methods.
• Will have knowledge of biological evidence collection and preservation techniques, rules of evidence, forensic serology, basic human anatomy and physiology.
• Will be familiar with database applications such as LIMS and CODIS.

• Operate, maintain, validate and calibrate laboratory instruments
• Develop and implement procedures in response to agency policy, state and federal laws, etc.
• Perform quality control and quality assurance practices
• Work with laboratory chemicals, controlled substances, and various biological fluids with the possibility of being exposed to blood borne pathogens
• Follow all established protocols and procedures
• Complete assigned laboratory tasks as deemed necessary by the forensic chemistry manager
• Senior Forensic Scientist: Supervise major training programs, oversee certification-testing programs, conduct research and planning in support of laboratory projects and goals

• BA/BS degree in a natural science.
• BA/BS Degree must include a passing grade in these clearly defined courses; Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Instrumental Analysis

• Will have membership in one of more professional forensic organizations.
• Will have certification in a related area from the American Board of Criminalistics (ABC).
• Senior Forensic Scientists must have completed training and be actively working cases in two or more forensic disciplines and pass annual proficiency tests in these disciplines.
