DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW The Media Access Group creates captions, subtitles and descriptions for a variety of media clients, including PBS and commercial television networks, movies, DVDs, digital media and environmental installations. The Media Access Group (MAG) is a pioneer in making media accessible for people with sensory disabilities. The Caption Center (TCC) was the first captioning agency in the world. We helped pioneer the development of line-21 closed captioning for viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing and we remain on the forefront of caption technology. Our audio description unit, Descriptive Video Service (DVS), provides important information about the visual elements of a program through the use of an additional narrative audio track. JOB OVERVIEW Under the supervision of the DVS Operations Manager, the Describer is responsible for the development of written descriptions of the visual elements of dramatic, historic and family-oriented programs from selected public and broadcast network television series, feature films and environmental installations. Descriptions will be created to fit within pauses in program narration and dialogue, or to describe the environment of physical spaces and the experiences found therein. Schedule flexibility will be necessary to accommodate workflow. Overtime will occasionally be mandatory according to project deadlines. RESPONSIBILITIES Develop written descriptions for the visual elements of dramatic, historic and family-oriented programs from selected public and broadcast network television series, feature films and environmental installations. SKILL SET Must demonstrate superior writing and editing skills including clarity, accuracy and speed. Excellent observation skills, high levels of focus and attention to detail and the ability to work under time constraints are essential. Proven experience in a variety of dramatic forms, consistency in meeting writing and editing deadlines, and a high rate of productivity is expected. DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW ANTIQUES... ROADSHOW is PBS's most-watched ongoing series, seen by around 7 million viewers each week. During its regular production tour, the show asks the public to bring in their collectibles and antiques to events across the country. Thousands of people have their items appraised free of charge. Selected items are recorded with an expert from one of the leading auction houses or antique dealers in America. The series is typically in production from April through June and in pre- and post-production year round. GBH’s Development division raises philanthropic support from individuals and organizations for GBH television, radio, and digital programs and initiatives, including some of public media’s most celebrated investigative journalism, documentaries, dramas, lifestyle shows, children’s programs, and resources for educators. The division includes: Major Giving, Major Annual Giving, Gift Planning & Endowment, and Foundation Development. POSITION OVERVIEW Based in the Foundation Development team and reporting to the Senior Director of Institutional Giving, the Prospect Research Analyst is responsible for managing all research on foundation donors and prospects for GBH programs and projects. As a critical thinker, strong writer, and synthesizer of information, the Prospect Research Analyst responds to requests for prospect identification and research and manages the prospect pool; prepares funder meeting briefings and profiles for development colleagues and senior leadership; facilitates the vetting of foundation prospects for acceptability; and stays current with foundation trends, emerging interests, and opportunities, disseminating that information to the team and others across the institution, as appropriate. This is a key position in a highly productive, fast-paced environment.
