Workman Children’s Publishing has an exciting new opportunity for an editor, working on nonfiction titles for kids ages 0–14. Bringing more than four years of editorial experience to the role, including the ability to manage authors and agents and edit complex text with minimal supervision, this role offers the opportunity to be part of a small but versatile and curiously creative team. Reporting to the Executive Editor of Children’s Publishing, Workman Children’s Publishing has an exciting new opportunity for an editor, working on nonfiction titles for kids ages 0–14. Reporting to the Executive Editor of Children’s Publishing, the editor will assume responsibility for titles ranging from board books to illustrated middle grade nonfiction, acquire new projects for a growing list, and develop original book ideas. We’re looking for someone with a solid background in children’s publishing, expertise in editing texts of various lengths, and a strong editorial vision for each project. The ideal candidate should be able to work independently, support the Executive Editor on projects as assigned, and be comfortable asking for help should problems arise. Our offices are... wonderfully creative and collaborative, and the ideal candidate will regularly pitch ideas and projects, participate in discussions with the Executive Editor, Publisher, and Sales, and have authors and agents they routinely get submissions from. They should be able to articulate their taste verbally and in writing, both in-house and out. They will be advocates for their projects from start to finish. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Work with the Executive Editor to identify opportunities on the list for new titles across age groups and categories Manage a list of 10–15 titles per year Meet with agents, authors, illustrators, and in-house sales, marketing, and editorial staff to pitch and hear about book ideas and provide feedback Make deals and negotiate contracts (with supervision) Manage intern and assistant on a project basis as requested Independently edit texts for different formats and age groups Collaborate with design, managing editorial, sales, and other departments as necessary to meet deadlines Present at in-house meetings including Acquisitions, Launch, Sales Conference, and Editorial Requirements: * Minimum 4 years’ experience in children’s publishing * A thorough understanding of the overall publishing process and of the children’s book market * Expertise in both line editing and conceptual editing * A creative person with excellent oral and written communication skills, self-motivated and able to work independently as necessary, as well as with colleagues across the organization * Excellent attention to detail and proven ability to meet deadlines * Established contacts in the agent community * Proven ability to negotiate with authors and agents * Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook Workman Publishing is steadfast in its commitment to innovation, creativity, inclusion, and excellence.
