Program Summary:

YOLA , A music education program of the LA Phil, provides incomparable and equitable access to a high-quality and intensive music education for more than 1,700 elementary, middle, and high school students from diverse and vibrant communities across Los Angeles at five unique sites. In providing this access, YOLA strives to support young people to leverage their learned skills and artistic identities and create transformational change for themselves and their communities. In 2021, the Beckmen YOLA Center was opened as a purpose-built space for YOLA programming and as cultural arts resource in the city of Inglewood.

Position Summary:

The YOLA Site Conductor is a part-time position responsible for the artistic quality and education of the assigned YOLA ensemble(s). YOLA Site Conductors lead rehearsals and guide pedagogy for the site orchestras at individual YOLA program sites. Each YOLA Site Conductor is a member of a cross-site artistic leadership team of conductors, who work collaboratively to guide the long-term musical and social growth of all YOLA musicians. This position reports to the YOLA Artistic Administrator and collaborates with the YOLA Site Program Manager. Further, each YOLA Site Conductor must reflect and communicate our respective partner organizations' mission and values as well as embrace and implement YOLA's curriculum and pedagogy practices.

Scope of Work

Conducting:
• Lead Children orchestras in multiple weekly rehearsals from September through May, the July summer session, and as required in preparation for concerts and additional special events.
• Rehearsals are expected to focus on building musical knowledge and understanding, as well as orchestral and instrumental techniques, with a goal of fostering the socio-emotional growth of the individual musicians and the ensemble as a community.
• Reinforce orchestra members' understanding of concert etiquette and standard performance practices. Maintain high standards of personal musicianship, as well as high standards for the orchestra membership. Communicate responsibilities and expectations to students and parents, and be available to converse with them during breaks, as well as before and after rehearsals.
• Select repertoire appropriate to the performance level, instrumentation, and pedagogical of each orchestra, in collaboration with LA Phil artistic direction and site teaching artists.
• Follow the YOLA curriculum and uphold its core tenets around culturally responsive teaching, creative youth development and artistic development.

Administrative:
• Develop effective and efficient rehearsal schedules and lesson plans to be shared with cooperating teaching artists and site staff, with an aim of aligning site instructional goals across classes and ensembles.
• Coordinate with YOLA Ensemble Librarians for the purchase, rental, bowing, and marking of performance materials and scores.
• Collaborate with Learning and YOLA staff in the formative and formal assessment of musical and social development of YOLA musicians and ensembles.
• Collaborate with Learning and YOLA staff on developing and implementing an active recruitment program for the YOLA site.
• Create, implement, document, revise and maintain curriculum informed by youth development best practices and YOLA curriculum and pedagogy.
• Attend meetings related to events and projects you are tasked with and actively communicating conflicts and preparing for any meetings that cannot be attended.
• Attend TA professional development sessions and visit group lessons on a regular basis to maintain pedagogical alignment across site instruction.
• Participate in all Professional Development series related to curriculum and any processes around curriculum evaluation and assessment.
• Be an active and participatory member of the Learning team and engage with all events for the YOLA site.

Minimum Requirements

Position Preferences
• Demonstrated music educator and conductor with extensive experience working with youth orchestras at all levels.
• Strong understanding of youth orchestra repertoire, beginning instrumental curriculum, teaching artist pedagogy, and youth development practices.
• Flexible, creative, and innovative in approach to curriculum, programming, and concert design.
• Ability to effectively communicate with multiple constituent groups including the surrounding community, partner organizations, teaching artists, students, and parents.
• Have excellent communication skills, with attention to detail, strong sense of empathy and a proactive nature.
• Have the ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive situations with excellent judgment and discretion.
• Experience as a motivational mentor and support for students, parents, and teaching artists.

• Four-year undergraduate degree with a focus on music performance, music theory, or equivalent experience preferred.

• Secondary language fluency is a plus.

About the YOLA Program:
YOLA, a music education program of the LA Phil, provides incomparable and equitable access to a high-quality and intensive music education for more than 1,700 elementary, middle, and high school students from diverse and vibrant communities across Los Angeles at five unique sites. In providing this access, YOLA strives to support young people to leverage their learned skills and artistic identities and create transformational change for themselves and their communities. In 2021, the Beckmen YOLA Center was opened as a purpose-built space for YOLA programming and as cultural arts resource in the city of Inglewood.

About the YOLA National Festival (YNF):

An intensive summer orchestra program with a focus on rigorous artistic development, the YOLA National Festival is for young musicians from Sistema-inspired programs and programs similarly invested in youth and community development through music.

Serving over 170 musicians ages 12-18 from El Sistema-inspired programs throughout the United States, participants will perform as part of this top-tier national youth orchestra. Musicians will convene for 10 days of learning with the festival's world-renown faculty, guest artists, and conductors.

All travel, lodging, and meals are provided at no cost for participating musicians. The YOLA National Festival will be housed on the campus of Pepperdine University with engagements at the Beckmen YOLA Center, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the Hollywood Bowl.

Position Summary:

The Residential Life Manager for the YOLA National Festival is a part-time, seasonal position from July 5th - July 16th, 2023 in Los Angeles, CA with limited remote work beginning in May 2023 (approx. 8-10 hours/week) The Residential Life Manager will work in conjunction with the Culture and Residential Life Director and LA Phil staff to ensure a highly organized, safe and exciting residential life experience for YNF. This includes creating a sense of "off-stage" community, managing residence hall life, and
implementing safety and security measures that ensure participants have the supervision and support they need.

All flights, lodging, meals, and transportation for the Student Life Manager will be provided by the LA Phil.

The Residential Life Manager will need to be fully available for the period of July 5th - July 16th, 2023.

This position will include evening and weekend responsibilities. This is a live-on campus position at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. Live-on campus dates include July 5th - July 16th, 2023.

Residential Life Managers will also support training sessions and meetings leading up to the festival in conjunction with the Culture and Residential Life Director.

Management/Supervision
• The Residential Life Managers are responsible for supervising YOLA National Festival Residential Counselors (RC's) in conjunction with the Culture and Residential Life Director.
• The Residential Life Manager will report directly to the Culture and Residential Life Director.
• Implement and co-lead comprehensive Residential Life staff trainings.

This position will include evening and weekend responsibilities

Operations:
• Implement residential life programs as directed by the Culture and Residential Life Director.
• Ensure that the implementation of programs are in line with the safety protocols of YOLA and LA Phil
• Build activity systems and implement them with the support of RC's.
• Manage Residential Life Staff
• Oversee Residence Life Program for participants
• Coordinate housing check-in, check-out process
• Implement rooming assignments
• Coordinate mealtimes and processes, including offsite or catered meals as needed
• Following consequence protocols/actions for participants as necessary
• Coordinate camp movement from Pepperdine University to Walt Disney Concert Hall and Beckmen YOLA Center, and work with Transportation Coordinator and Culture and Residential Life Director on daily transportation needs, bus distribution, rooming assignments, and luggage movements for arrival and departure from LAX
• Manage wardrobe sizing and distribution for participants

Minimum Requirements

Position Requirements:
• Experience working with youth aged 12-18.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Must adhere to the highest standards of role-modeling and positive behaviors around and toward staff, students and faculty.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) communication preferred but not required.
• Detail oriented with strong interpersonal skills and a desire to work on a highly collaborate, intrinsically motivated team.
• Experience coordinating youth focused programs and implementing systems to achieve programmatic goals.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and a solutions-oriented approach to challenges.
• Ability to prioritize workload, efficient and effective worker.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment in a self-directed way.
• Fluency in all Microsoft suites components and remote working tools (Slack, Google, Zoom, etc.).
• Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds is preferred.
• Must escalate any identified problems or concerns to the Culture and Residence Life Director or to the Manager, YOLA National in a timely manner.
• Must maintain and report accurate hours worked.
• Must be CPR, First Aid and AED Certified, session to be held upon arrival as needed.
• Must be at least 21 years or older at the time of the festival.
• Must be fully vaccinated; booster is highly encouraged.

Position Expectations:
• Be an active and participatory member of the YOLA National team and engage with all events for the YOLA National Festival.
• Attend meetings related to events and projects you are tasked with and actively communicating conflicts and preparing for any meetings that cannot be attended.
• Complete various tasks within established time frames.
• Ability to work with multiple priorities that may need swift reorganization.
• Strong independent work and proactively identify and assess effective methods of work operation.
• Have excellent communication skills, with attention to detail, strong sense of empathy and a proactive nature.
• Have the ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive situations with excellent judgment and discretion.
• Maintain professionalism in all instances and embrace serving as a representative of the festival, the YOLA program and the LA Phil in this role.
• Interact with stakeholders of the YOLA community, including but not limited to administrators, partners, teaching artists, alumni, parents, and young musicians.
