The goal of the AAMC Center for Health Justice, founded in 2021, is for all communities to thrive - a goal that reaches well beyond medical care. Achieving health equity means addressing the common roots of health, social, and economic injustices and implementing policies and practices that are explicitly oriented toward equal opportunity. The Center for Health Justice partners with public health and community- based organizations, government and health care entities, the private sector, community leaders, and community members to build a case for health justice through research, analysis, and expertise. To learn more about the AAMC Center for Health Justice, visit: www.aamchealthjustice.org
Why us, why now?
The AAMC Center for Health Justice believes solutions to health inequities live within local communities affected by injustice. These solutions must be developed through diverse multi-sector partnerships and be informed by research and evaluation. Sustainable solutions must be reflected in policies and practices to effect necessary systemic change.
As part of its commitment to engage diverse perspectives and sectors in its work, the center convenes a Multi-sector Partner Group (MPG) with leaders from sectors in and outside health care to contribute to the strategy and agenda of the Center for Health Justice, and to advance its mission to build cross-sector partnerships that address the complex constellation of social, political, and environmental factors that contribute to population health and health inequities.
The center and MPG have identified environmental justice as a new area of focus for the center and developed a working definition to guide the center's program and research activity:
Communities made marginalized - particularly communities of color, Indigenous communities, people with disabilities, and low-income communities - are more likely to be exposed to and harmed by environmental hazards. These hazards can be chemical (e.g., pesticides, toxic waste, lead in paint), physical (e.g., floods, noise pollution, drought, injuries), biological (e.g., molds, allergies, epidemics) or psychosocial (e.g., stress, violence).
This unjust exposure to environmental hazards gets in the way of the health and the long-term well-being of individuals and families living in these communities across both rural and urban settings and in every US region, state, and local jurisdiction.
Environmental Justice (EJ) "embraces the principle that all people and communities have a right to equal protection and equal enforcement of environmental laws and regulations2" and demands the meaningful involvement of all people in the development, implementation and enforcement of such laws and regulations. EJ also requires "changing unjust structural conditions deeply ingrained in our built environment and social and economic systems3."
To launch its Health Justice Fellowship Program and to support the co-development of its environmental justice portfolio, the AAMC Center for Health Justice is seeking an inaugural full-time Fellow with relevant subject matter and professional expertise, as well as a passion for the collaborative process of health justice.
Under the mentorship and guidance of center leadership, and with input from our MPG and the center's AAMC CHARGE collaborative, the Fellow will have opportunities to develop key skills, knowledge, and networks while contributing to a national effort to promote health equity and environmental justice. The center will support one Fellow for a period of two years, starting September 2023.
How will the Health Justice Fellow make an impact on environmental justice?
• Conduct a landscape analysis of local and state-wide community-based and/or multi-sector environmental justice efforts, and interview stakeholders to identify successes, lessons learned, opportunities, and barriers.
• Based on the results of the landscape analysis, identify actionable policy, research, and/or organizing opportunities at the state and local-levels and develop a report with a call to action for diverse, multi-sector community partnerships.
• In collaboration with internal and external partners, develop and launch follow- up activities to the report (i.e., a convening, a funding opportunity, etc.) that catalyze environmental justice action.
• Working with the center's Communications team, contribute to the development of a multimedia storytelling campaign that amplifies community voices and successes and increases the visibility of local environmental justice experts and organizations.
• Develop and foster connections between the center and local, state, and national environmental justice organizations to identify opportunities for collaboration and coordinated action.
• Contribute, as needed, to any of the center's other environmental justice-related activities such as research, public opinion polling, comment letters, meetings, etc.
• Participate in personal professional training and development.
Qualifications
While it is unlikely that any individual will have all the following attributes, successful candidates will demonstrate a mix of the experiences, skills, and competencies outlined below:
• Demonstrated passion for health equity and environmental justice
• Minimum of 5-7 years of professional and/or academic experience in environmental justice or related field
• A strong, existing environmental justice network (i.e. individuals and organizations) and an understanding of the policy and structural drivers of, and potential solutions to, environmental injustices
• Ability to develop bidirectional partnerships with internal and external collaborators
• Experience working in multi-sector settings on intersectional issues
• Experience working with a group or groups that are or have been directly impacted by environmental injustice
• Quantitative and/or qualitative research experience (preferred, not required)
• Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to translate complex concepts for a general public audience
• Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize work, multitask, and manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Ability to operate both independently and to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team environment and participate in the center's consensus building process
• Experience with Microsoft Windows, including proficiency with Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams
Criteria
• Applications are due April 7, 2023
• A resume and a cover letter explaining your interest in the center's Health Justice Fellowship are required for all applicants. In the cover letter, respond to the following prompts:
• Why are you passionate about environmental justice and how have you translated that passion into action?
• Explain why and how your qualifications make you the best candidate for the Health Justice Fellowship
• What are your short- and long-term professional development goals?
• Include links to LinkedIn and/or any other resources that showcase who you are, and your qualifications
