Position Overview
• Perform trail maintenance on both front and backcountry trails, including maintenance of motorized trails.
• Trail maintenance may consist of logging out trails using either a chainsaw or crosscut saw, brushing, tread repair, repair and maintenance of trails structures such as bridges and puncheons
• Construction of water bars, retaining walls, etc may occur.
• Maintenance of saws, equipment and gear will be required.
• Use of technology such as tablets and GPS systems will be utilized to collect field data such as trail feature inventory, sign inventory, resource damage locations, campsite inventory will also be performed.
• Members that are chosen to perform trails and wilderness ranger duties will be required to camp in the backcountry for multiple nights to accomplish work assignments.
• Trail crew may occasionally work with agency partners
This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.
Position Benefits
Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $740/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly. The living allowance is a fixed rate determined by the (agency) and ACE and is not flexible.
Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or the USFS.

• *Crew Life:**
Conservation Crew Members with ACC serve on a crew with 4-6 other Crew Members and 2 Crew Leaders who provide project expertise, mentorship, training, and support for the success of all participants. Food is provided while in the field. Crews work together to plan meals and complete all necessary chores (cooking, washing dishes, etc). Most dietary restrictions can be accommodated if known ahead of time. Many evenings include group discussions on conservation topics.
ACC supports a culture of feedback and growth. Crew Members will set goals at the beginning of the season and review their performance through both self-evaluation and a review with their Crew Leader in the middle and at the end of their season. Evaluations will cover areas such as professionalism, responsibility and leadership, communication, engagement, productivity, safety, and equipment use. Crew Members will also be asked to evaluate their Crew Leaders performance, the overall program, and their experience at the end of their term.
• *Expectations:**
ACC is an independent, non-residential program. Crew Members are responsible for their own housing, food, and transportation when not in the field. While members will be asked to supply as much of their personal equipment as possible, loaner gear will be available if needed, especially for more expensive items such as tents and sleeping bags. A gear list is provided upon acceptance into the program. Please ask immediately if there is loaner gear you require. In addition to providing food while in the field, ACC will provide group camp equipment, tools, protective gear, and transportation between ACC Offices and project sites.

• *Time Commitment:** Expected Start Date: 6/6/22 Estimated End Date: August/September 2022 Status: This is a full-time, seasonal 300-hour AmeriCorps National Service position.
• *Project Work:**
Projects take place across the Appalachian Region, including work with the US Forest Service, the National Park Service, and other land managers. During their time in the field, Crew Members camp overnight and work outdoors in all types of weather conditions, performing heavy manual labor related to environmental conservation and restoration projects. These hands-on projects include visitor access improvements, trail construction and maintenance, habitat restoration, invasive species treatments, historic restoration, disaster relief, and much more. Most projects require hiking out to remote work sites for the day with tools, equipment, and day pack.
• *Schedule:**
Typically, Crew Members will meet at the ACC Office in Harrisonburg, travel in a crew vehicle to their project site and remain in the field for 9 days at a time, followed by 5 days off. While in the field, Crew Members work 8-10 hours a day. The day starts with a stretch circle and safety meeting and includes two fifteen-minute breaks and a half hour break for lunch.
Prior to their start date, selected Crew Members must begin their background check process and complete an online enrollment process which includes completing e-forms, uploading IDs, and enrolling with AmeriCorps. • *Crew Life:**
Conservation Crew Members with ACC serve on a crew with 4-6 other Crew Members and 2 Crew Leaders who provide project expertise, mentorship, training, and support for the success of all participants. Food is provided while in the field. Crews work together to plan meals and complete all necessary chores (cooking, washing dishes, etc). Most dietary restrictions can be accommodated if known ahead of time. Many evenings include group discussions on conservation topics.
ACC supports a culture of feedback and growth. Crew Members will set goals at the beginning of the season and review their performance through both self-evaluation and a review with their Crew Leader in the middle and at the end of their season. Evaluations will cover areas such as professionalism, responsibility and leadership, communication, engagement, productivity, safety, and equipment use. Crew Members will also be asked to evaluate their Crew Leaders performance, the overall program, and their experience at the end of their term.
• *Expectations:**
ACC is an independent, non-residential program. Crew Members are responsible for their own housing, food, and transportation when not in the field. While members will be asked to supply as much of their personal equipment as possible, loaner gear will be available if needed, especially for more expensive items such as tents and sleeping bags. A gear list is provided upon acceptance into the program. Please ask immediately if there is loaner gear you require. In addition to providing food while in the field, ACC will provide group camp equipment, tools, protective gear, and transportation between ACC Offices and project sites.

The intern will conduct independent research to write digital content for a broad audience about historic sites, events, and figures. The internship will offer students the opportunity to learn more about interpretation and education as a profession within the NPS. This is a remote opportunity. The paths they traveled are now designated as the California National Historic Trail (NHT) which stretches over 5,000 miles across 10 states. The California NHT is administered by the National Park Service's NationalTrails office. A National Historic Trail is a long-distance route that follows and commemorates historic path of travel that changed the history and character of the U.S. Today the route offers opportunities to visit surviving sites, trail segments, and defining places of history and learn about the diverse stories they tell. National historic trails are unlike national parks in that theNPS NTIR does not own or manage land along the historic route. Rather, NTIR works with the governments, tribes, institutions, and private landowners who manage the lands along the historic route. National Trails Office National Trails administers nine national historic trails and one historic highway that, combined, stretch for 25,000 miles across 24 states. The National Trails office works with a diversity of partners to protect, develop, and promote these special places. Their staff of interdisciplinary experts assist community groups, private land owners,nonprofit organizations, tribes, and federal, state, county, and local agencies with site planning and design, on-the-ground trail mapping, educational opportunities, and identifying and protecting resources. Learning Goal Best practices in the field of interpretation and its processes, writing for a public audience,evaluation of interpretive materials, research and content review, history methods, NPS design standards, digital tools for communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Qualifications To qualify, the applicant should: (1) be a student at an HBCU; (2) have an interest in history, interpretation, National Trails, and/or the National Park Service; (3) have strong written communication skills and an interest in writing for public audiences; (4) have knowledge,experience, or interest in history interpretation through digital media; and (5) have demonstrated experience working independently and collaborating on work or school projects.
Participants must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent legal resident ( "green-card-holder) and currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or Ph.D. degree program at an accredited institution of higher education during the summer internship.
Additional Qualifications
• Must be currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited HBCU institution
• Must be between 16 and 30years of age
• Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
• Must be able to pass a federal background check
• Must be fully vaccinated
Work Environment This is a remote opportunity. The intern and supervisor will work out a schedule for virtualmeetings and check-ins with staff. The intern will be responsible for their own workplace and internet connection but NTIR will provide a PIV (secure access) card and government computerafter a background check.
