The Vice President, Communications and Marketing (VPCM) will be part of the Executive Leadership Committee (ELC) working closely with the Chief Executive Officer, Chief of Staff and other senior leaders of the organization to set and lead execution of organizational goals and priorities. The VPCM will build the visibility of AWF, manage the organization’s reputation, and promote AWF’s unique brand among target audiences in Africa and globally. The VPCM will also be responsible for reviewing and leading the implementation of AWF’s communications and marketing strategies and staff, including ensuring the division is collaborating with program and development teams in service to AWF’s strategic plan, tracking the division’s progress in achieving AWF’s strategy and representing the organization among priority communication and marketing targets that are key to mission success.
To do this, the VPCM will be responsible for the growth, development and management of a global team of marketing and communications specialists as well as fostering cross-team and cross-division communications to support program and other division’s needs. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned communications professional who is highly collaborative, and who brings passion, creativity, out-of-the box thinking, an entrepreneurial spirit, and energy to build and lead a communications and marketing team that is considered best-in-class externally and valued as an amplifier of impact within AWF.

Key Responsibilities
Communications & Marketing
• Advise Executive Leadership Committee (ELC) on direction and leading-edge approaches for organizational messaging and positioning to maximize delivery on AWF strategy
• Drive the overall brand awareness of AWF and its mission by leveraging cutting edge communication strategies to position AWF’s brand as a homegrown voice of African conservation on the global stage, the engine to grow African conservation leadership, and as influential in sustainable development
• Oversee AWF’s communications and marketing strategies to maximize returns for AWF’s strategy in close collaboration with other divisions
• Partner with Division leads for Global Leadership and Conservation Strategy to build conservation practitioners’ (AWF’s and partners’) capacity to achieve impact through strategic communication.
• Drive growth of new audience acquisition in key strategic markets as well as develop engaging campaigns to drive awareness and support of AWF’s work among priority donor and prospective donor audiences
• Increase visibility of the organization’s work among targeted audiences through a network of influential contexts and innovative approaches to amplify AWF’s message
• In support of the Division leads for Development and Global Leadership. ensure that AWF donors and supporters (current and prospective) are engaged in authentic relationship with AWF

Leadership
• Build and lead a high performing Communication & Marketing team, directly supervising: Director, Public Relations & Corporate Communications and Director, Marketing & Creative
• Bring influential networks and cutting-edge communications approaches to position AWF as the go to organization for conservation in Africa
• In consultation with ELC colleagues, set multi-year and annual communications and marketing goals, objectives, and workplans to effectively meet or exceed KPIs and ensure accountability and transparency
• Oversee implementation of AWF’s 5-year strategic communication plan and drive performance using Key Performance Indicators focused on delivery of AWF’s strategic plan
• Provide mentorship and growth opportunities to the Communication & Marketing team
• Build a culture where the marketing, development and programming functions collaborate and make decisions that are informed by reliable market-tested data

Board-support

Qualifications / Desired Skills
Advanced degree in a relevant field
Minimum of 15 years of experience marketing and communications
• Leverage your network of high-level communications and marketing professionals relevant to AWF’s mission
• Proven team player who thrives in complex environment that requires cross team planning, communication, collaboration
• Ability to travel both domestically and internationally a minimum of 25% per year

Craig has over 45 years of experience in Africa with a portfolio of work ranging from conducting wildlife research, overseeing field-based conservation efforts, crafting and leading safaris for a diversity of acclaimed institutions, and successfully fundraising for AWF’s overall mission
Responsibilities
• In collaboration with preferred safari operators, designs, markets and fills annual slate of AWF membership safaris
• Develops Safari Programs marketing assets, including any brochures, website changes, catalogues, pre and post safari materials.
• Supports in organizing the logistics of the annual pre- and post – board meeting and council meeting safaris
• Supports in managing logistics for the customized individual and small group safaris, as needed, with high net worth individuals and prospects
• Recommends design and manages logistics of internal staff travel to Africa, largely as part of training for front line fundraisers who will benefit from experiencing first-hand AWF’s work.
• Account manage relationships with AWF contacts (in bound and out bound operators, lodge owners, etc.) across the African continent.
• Cultivate parties interested in travelling with AWF from leads to registrants.
• Serve as the frontline “customer service” representative for AWF safari program, answering traveler inquiries, hosting pre-trip calls and deployment of post-trip surveys.
• Utilize Raiser’s Edge for CRM and communications and support in other internal administrative tasks, such as scheduling debrief meetings measuring metrics.

Skills & Qualifications
• Minimum of 2-3 years of managing international travel programs –experience focused on African destinations preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple tasks/projects and attention to detail is a must.
