The Pre- College Program is a summer program for current 12th graders beginning college in September 2023. The Pre-College Program goals are: 1- Making sure that each student matriculates in college in Fall 2023 and 2- Students will complete 1-2 asynchronous CLEP course(s) and 3- Each student will sign up to take 1-2 CLEP exams. In addition, the program will explore the themes of transition and will address all the elements that are required for each student to matriculate successfully in college in the Fall of 2023. The teacher will provide advisement using small groups and one on one meetings. The teacher will also oversee students taking asynchronous CLEP courses. The teacher will be responsible for planning and implementing advisement/college transition lessons that may include outdoor programming and other physical activities.

We are looking for energetic and creative educators who enjoy working with youth during the summer and are available for in person programming.

Selected applicants will be responsible for developing and implementing a 20-day, project-based curriculum. For the interview, we ask that applicants present ideas for the purpose and theme of their ideal summer experience. Programming begins July 5 th 2023 and meets Wednesday through Friday the first week of July and Monday through Thursday for the following four weeks culminating with a final presentation. All applicants must be available for all 20 days of programming from 9 am to 3 pm. Lunch is provided and spent with the students.

Responsibilities

The Middle School Learning Specialist is a full time role, five days a week, from 8 AM - 4 PM each weekday except Wednesday, which is 8 AM - 5 PM to accommodate weekly after school faculty meetings. The start date is August 29, 2023. THe position is a part of Bank Street’s Professional Employees’ Federation (PEF) and is supervised by the leadership of the Middle School.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates should have:
• Master’s degree in Special Education or a related field is preferable
• Understanding of childhood development/experience working with elementary-age students
• At least three (3) years of experience working with children with special needs, preferably in a school setting
• Knowledge and experience in integrated educational settings
• Experience with a variety of math and literacy programs, including Wilson Language’s FUNdations program, is preferred
• Strong communication and organizational skills
• Experience working with the NYC Department of Education with regard to coordinating related services

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Work collaboratively with Teachers, Academic Specialists, the School psychologist, other Learning Specialists, and the Division Head to support and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of children ages 7-10, specifically children with a range of learning needs.
• Adapt and/or develop, and then administer diagnostic tools to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of all 7-10 year-olds and to identify the learning needs of these children.
• Interpret and summarize diagnostic evaluations, including neuropsychological and psychoeducational evaluations conducted by external providers.
• Support teachers in conducting common learning assessments to measure growth and develop student and classroom instructional goals.
• Help teachers continuously develop their capacity for adapting curriculum to meet the needs of all learners.
• Work directly with students; individually, in small groups, and in whole-class settings.
• Support children through meetings with parents, outside professionals, and agencies, such as the NYCDOE related service providers, private tutors, and outside evaluators.
• Meet with parents to increase their knowledge of the children’s learning profile, including strengths and areas of growth to help organize any interventions that are necessary.
• Communicate with families regarding progress monitoring, as well as the implementation of home-based intervention.
• Participate in and present at a variety of relevant meetings, including Parent Association Meetings and Learning Diversity Resource Group, a parent affinity group.
• Plan and/or attend student support meetings with teacher teams, divisional leadership, and schoolwide learning specialists, mental health team members, and school leaders.
• Attend and contribute to regular division, department, and supervisory meetings.
• Commit to being a learner and participant in addressing issues of social justice, diversity, equity, and anti-bias education in our curriculum and in our community.
• Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth, including one’s own racial and identity development.
• Additional responsibilities as needed in support of divisional and/or school activities, such supporting arrival and dismissal, recess, lunch, and special events.

Salary Range: $52,193-$114,915 annually, depending on experience and according to union payscale

Position Description

This is a full-time, 10-month faculty position with a stipend for needed summer work. A faculty member in this role will serve as both the director of student learning support in addition to either being an advisor in a 40% advisement position or teaching three 2 or 3-credit courses.

Candidates must have a depth of experience in supporting adult learners along with classroom teaching experiences. Candidates should have a deep understanding of learning disabilities and ways to accommodate learners to support their academic success. Candidates should bring an asset-based perspective to supporting graduate students in becoming strong advocates for themselves in their learning.

Director of Student Learning Support Responsibilities
• Be knowledgeable about ADA and institutional requirements to create accessible learning environments.
• Meet with graduate students who are seeking accommodations for initial intake to discuss the process and the types of accommodations that would support them in their studies and determine eligibility.
• Provide a letter of accommodation for eligible students and maintain documentation related to accommodations and eligibility.
• Arrange for required accommodations beyond the scope of what an instructor can provide such as signers, transcription services, text-to-speech technology, etc.
• Communicate and consult with faculty and adjuncts to support the implementation of accommodations and ongoing support of student learning and well-being.
• Provide students with mental health referrals and maintain an up to date list of counselors/mental health professionals to use for referrals.
• Check in with all registered students within the first five weeks and last three weeks of the semester. Be available to meet with students as issues and needs arise.
• Facilitate a group for students to discuss strategies for balancing graduate school, work, and personal life.
• Participate in the adjunct meetings that occur once each fall and spring semester.
• Collaborate with the Chief Enrollment Officer and Registrar in the development of a crisis response plan.
• Complete annual compliance report in collaboration with the Assistant Dean, Institutional Data, Assessment, and Certification.
• Coordinating the Alumni Writing Program
• Recruit and support alumni tutors
• Connect students to tutors
• Provide consultation to students to support writing development

Instructor Responsibilities

Given the nature of this position and the qualifications required, it is likely that should the Director of Student Learning Support assume teaching responsibilities, these would be for special education courses at the College. The specific courses assigned would be based on areas of expertise, interest, and availability.

Supervised Fieldwork Responsibilities

The work of a fieldwork advisor includes but is not limited to:
• Observing 7-9 advisees approximately three times per semester in their placements and conducting three-way meetings with each student and their mentor teacher.
• Convening and facilitating regular one-on-one meetings with each advisee to support the development of practice through reflective supervision.
• Facilitating weekly, 2-hour conference group meetings during the fall and spring semesters.
• Providing academic and certification guidance in accordance with degree requirements and College policy.

Additional Responsibilities

All full-time faculty must engage in service to the community through:
• Committee work
• Participation in program, department, and divisional meetings
• Mentoring graduate students on their integrative master’s projects

This position is based in our Manhattan campus but requires flexibility to teach and/or advise online and at locations in other boroughs.

Qualifications:
• A doctorate in special education or a related field is preferred.
• A master's degree in special education, or a related field, is required.
• 5 or more years of teaching experience with children with disabilities.
• Experience teaching in public schools is preferred.
• Experience teaching in higher education is preferred.

EDUC 530: Foundations of Modern Education, 3 credits

This course examines the historical, philosophical, and cultural roots of contemporary education, including Bank Street's progressive history and philosophy, the contributions of major educational leaders, and current practices and innovations in education. Participants will analyze how critical issues in the field affect their practice with children and families in schools and communities. The course will explore ways in which education as an avenue for individual advancement and social justice has been defined, advocated for, enacted, and is still being negotiated in the U.S. The course will attend to what has been achieved as well as challenges that remain in creating educational spaces that affirm children’s and families’ race, social class, immigration status, language, gender, and ability, among other identity domains. Participants will apply their understandings to think about their role in bringing about desired, warranted changes in order to create more inclusive and democratic educational environments.
