The Public Safety Sergeant must be able to successfully complete the Public Safety Academy when scheduled to attend, usually within the first six months of their initial hire date as a Public Safety Sergeant, if not successfully completed previously as a Public Safety Officer.

The Public Safety Sergeant must certify in the use of and carry any and all intermediate weapons and other public safety equipment required by the College within the first six months of their initial hire date as a Public Safety Sergeant, if not successfully completed previously as a Public Safety Officer.

Minimum Education:
• High School diploma or equivalent required;
• Associate Degree or 60 college credit hours in a public safety related field strongly recommended
• Bachelor's Degree in a public safety related field preferred.

Minimum Experience/Training:
• Minimum of four years prior experience in public safety or related field of work required.
• Prior experience in campus public safety/law enforcement preferred.
• Prior supervisory experience in public safety/law enforcement or related field of work preferred.

Minimum Certification/Licenses:
• Current CPR with AED certification required.
• Florida Class D Security Officer License or active law enforcement certification required.
• Valid Florida Driver's License required or, as a condition of continued employment, a Valid Florida Driver's License within 30 days after beginning employed by the College. Valid Florida Driver's License must be maintained throughout employment.
• Certification in first aid preferred.
• Ability to use fire extinguishers, golf carts, and patrol vehicles required.

Essential Functions:
• Daily - 20%: Directs, coordinates, and supervises Public Safety Officers and other department personnel in their performance of regularly assigned duties and responsibilities. Conducts daily shift briefings.
• Daily - 20%: Reviews safety documents including, but not limited to, incident reports, BOLOs, and daily logs for accuracy and compliance with established guidelines. Files and disseminates documents in accordance with established guidelines. Completes operational reports as directed.
• Daily - 5%: Conducts inspections of public safety personnel and equipment; issues and accounts for safety equipment.
• Daily - 5%: Responds to assigned calls for service, emergency and non-emergency situations, and critical incidents. Initiates calls for service through direct observation and citizen request. Acts as a first responder by providing initial assessment of situations and making determination of appropriate response, which may include administering first aid and life support to victims. Serves as supervisor on-scene and/or back-up to other responding officers. Manages emergent situations and critical incidents by following principles of Incident Command System (ICS) and facilitating the response of external agencies.
• Daily - 5%: Conducts and/or assists in various types of investigations. Conducts interviews, collects property and evidence, and secures crime scenes. Documents findings and prepares written detailed case reports and logs, as required.
• As Needed - 5%: Performs a number of community service functions including, but not limited to, conducting safety escorts, completing inspections and reports regarding safety hazards, and participating in crime prevention/awareness and community outreach to students, faculty, staff, and visitors including community-oriented problem solving, community-oriented policing, and other crime prevention measures.
• As Needed - 5% Participates in on-going training, assist in the development and implementation of training programs, and assists in training new employees as required and directed.
• As Needed - 5%: Completes public safety-related projects as assigned.
• Daily - 5%: Performs other work-related duties as assigned and appropriate.
• As Needed - 5%: Operates miscellaneous equipment including, but not limited to, computers and other information technology equipment, communications equipment, AEDs and other first aid/life safety equipment, cameras and video surveillance equipment, vehicles and vehicle jump starters, and intermediate weapons as required.
• As Needed - 5%: Assists in parking enforcement, vehicle and pedestrian traffic direction, special events security, surveillance activities, and other unique assignments.
• As Needed - 4%: Employs a variety of proactive patrol techniques and strategies in a vehicle, by bicycle, or on-foot to foster increased safety and security of all BC-affiliated persons and property.
• As Needed - 5%: Participates in pre-hire evaluations of prospective public safety employee candidates and makes recommendations on hiring. Conducts performance evaluations and makes recommendations in matters related to performance improvement plans, discipline, and retention.
• As Needed - 2%: Processes evidence, prepares court cases, and provides legal testimony.
• As Needed - 2%: Represents the department at community and business meetings.
• As Needed - 2%: Assists Lieutenant in establishing procedures and makes recommendations regarding improvements or changes in department operations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Working knowledge of public safety, law enforcement, and fire/life safety techniques.
• Basic knowledge of criminal and civil law.
• Basic knowledge of crime prevention methods such as community-oriented problem solving and community-oriented policing.
• Knowledge of and ability to use all systems and procedures relevant to the position which includes, but is not limited to, computers and applicable software applications, fire alarms and extinguishers, intrusion alarms, access control and camera monitoring systems, key control, emergency management procedures, vehicles and vehicle jump starters, and intermediate weapons as required.
