The Senior Media Relations Manager will work proactively to identify, develop, and nurture relationships with targeted media outlets and representatives, locally, nationally, and internationally, to tell Caltech's story of innovation and societal impact, and will foster connections between the Institute's leadership and faculty experts and these media outlets. Tactics may include coordinating and staffing editorial boards, exploring media partnerships, and outreach to new channels and operations, among other methods.
Proactive Communications, Media Training, And Metrics
The Senior Media Relations Manager is expected to maintain a keen awareness of world events and potential connections with Caltech and to seek and propose story ideas that will support Caltech’s communication strategies and goals. The individual will work closely with colleagues in OSC, including the strategy, digital communications, institute communications, and event productions teams to ensure that content is strategic, engaging, and coordinated across platforms/channels and appropriate for Caltech’s target audiences.
They will develop and implement robust processes for media training Institute experts and provide training and/or training resources to faculty, staff, and students as needed, and will assist with the development and maintenance of systems and resources to provide experts and materials that are relevant to key topics of interest in the media, and to breaking news events. Tactics may include the development of messaging points, press releases, Q&As and targeted pitches and positioning statements.
In collaboration with the Director of Research Communications and Media Relations, they will evaluate and strive to improve existing media relations assessment processes, including media monitoring reports, metrics, and key performance indicators.
Emergency And Crisis Communications
The Senior Media Relations Manager will play an integral role in proactive and reactive communications related to non-research topics, including events and incidents that have the potential to impact the Institute’s reputation. In this capacity/role, the Senior Media Relations Manager will work closely with the Chief Communications Officer, Director of Research Communications and Media Relations, and other senior leadership.
In regards to OSC’s emergency planning and training and its support of the Institute in such events, the Senior Media Relations Manager will serve as the primary liaison between OSC and other groups on campus with respect to emergency communications and build and maintain relationships with outside agencies (including but not limited to the Pasadena Fire Department and Pasadena Police Department) and individuals who collaborate with the Institute during emergencies; and will consult on and facilitate emergency-related communications to the media and the public via social media.
During emergency situations, the Senior Media Relations Manager will staff the Emergency Operations Center, assist in the development of a comprehensive communications strategy for each incident, and fill the role of Public Information Officer (PIO) and may serve as the Institute spokesperson.
The successful candidate will participate in the Institute's Crisis Management Council, attending regular meetings and representing OSC in emergency and planning drills and exercises, and will be responsible for maintaining OSC's emergency communications plan. They will play a leading role in handling emergencies during work and off hours.

• Demonstrated understanding of the media landscape is required.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience with emergency communications practices and protocols, including training on the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Incident Command System, is required.
