Focus is placed on the development of novel immunotherapeutics, not only as monotherapies, but more... importantly, in combination with other immune-mediating modalities, The Center for Immuno-Oncology (CIO) Translational Research area at the National Cancer Institute functions as a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary translational research programmatic effort with the goal of developing novel immunotherapies and immunotherapeutic strategies for cancer. Focus is placed on the development of novel immunotherapeutics, not only as monotherapies, but more... importantly, in combination with other immune-mediating modalities, and other conventional or experimental therapies, as part of an immuno-oncology programmatic effort. Within this effort are several research groups which interact closely with the clinical groups of the CIO, and with collaborators within the NCI intramural and extramural programs, and with investigators in the private sector. As Co-Director of the CIO, Dr. Jeffrey Schlom directs the Translational Research area of investigation.

The program takes advantage of the uniqueness of the NCI intramural program in that it spans high-risk basic discovery research in immunology genomics and tumor biology, through preclinical translational research, to paradigm-shifting clinical trials. Focus is placed on the design and development of novel 'off-the-shelf' recombinant (rec.) immunotherapeutics that can be used in clinical studies at numerous institutions. The major objective of the ADTTP is to provide medical oncologists advanced training in state-of-the-science principles and technologies of developmental therapeutics by utilizing the unique resources available within the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

The successful candidate(s) will participate in clinical research conducted at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD, Developmental Therapeutics Clinic (DTC) (https://dtc.cancer.gov/), NCI. The program will provide an excellent opportunity to refine skills in clinical investigation including novel strategies for trial design and methodology, protocol development, execution, monitoring, conformity with ethical standards, and formulation of attainable and pertinent laboratory correlates.

The trainee(s) will spend 40-60 percent of effort in clinical investigation involving inpatients and outpatients at the NIH, including a minimum of 1.5 days in DTC clinic activities. In addition, the trainee(s) will spend up to 40 percent effort in the DCTD Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program (CTEP) (https://ctep.cancer.gov/). The CTEP component of the training will broaden the trainee’s knowledge of new drug development by providing a unique opportunity to learn principles and concepts of agent prioritization, drug development strategies, protocol development and review, IND requirements, adverse event assessment and reporting.

Candidates must meet all of the following requirements:

•M.D. or an equivalent degree with a license to practice medicine in the United States

•Completion of subspecialty training in Medical Oncology at a US-accredited institution

•Board certification or eligibility in Medical Oncology
