Member Duties : Smith College has established itself as a leader in campus climate change initiatives, including building a new library with a low carbon footprint and beginning construction on a geothermal project that will lead to carbon neutrality. We now look to integrate our efforts to support local community and increase Smith sustainability by reducing food waste and providing meals to those in need. The Smith Food Rescue Network (SFRN) was created in 2022 by a student passionate about environmental sustainability to tackle these overlapping concerns. In 6 months and with only student volunteers, SFRN kept over 9,000 lbs of food from being wasted and provided nearly 7,000 meals to the nearby Community Kitchen. We need a VISTA committed to building on these impressive results. Work with us to streamline systems and build capacity so that more people in need are provided with reliable, delicious meals and Smith College can reduce waste and the negative environmental impact associated with it.
