Department: The Mother Church Reading Rooms
SUMMARY...
The Mother Church Reading Room on Massachusetts Avenue is a vibrant spiritual oasis in the city of Boston which provides healing resources and an inspiring atmosphere for our neighbors, local college students, Church members and visiting tourists. The Visual Merchandising and Community Engagement Associate Librarian position is primarily responsible for the visual presentation of the resources available for sale in The Mother Church Reading Room. The position uses grassroots community research to create displays that engage the full spectrum of audiences that The Mother Church Reading Room serves.
This position regularly identifies needs, challenges and public trends in the local community and relies on this research, along with prayerful discernment, to develop visually compelling displays that uplift thought and respond to the needs of the hour. These visual presentations bring the healing ideas of the writings of Mary Baker Eddy and the publications of the Christian Science Publishing Society to the local community, ensuring that these resources are effectively promoted and exhibited (see Manual, pg 64) and thus broadening the healing ministry of the Reading Room.
This position also actively seeks to strengthen and build mutual understanding and support between the Reading Room and the people it serves, including local Christian Scientists and public neighbors. The incumbent’s understanding of the community’s strengths and needs will help the entire Reading Room team effectively engage with and support the community.
This position will also serve shifts in the Reading Room. Working as part of a dedicated team of Associate Librarians, the incumbent offers each visitor a warm welcome and ensures their needs have been met with professionalism, spiritual discernment, and care. This includes developing and maintaining expert knowledge of the products that are published or sold by the Christian Science Publishing Society and recommending them to meet specific needs a customer may have. An essential aspect of Reading Room work is contributing to an uplifting environment of healing and spiritual discovery.
Church founder, Mary Baker Eddy, took great care in the selection of The Mother Church Reading Room Librarian. She describes the ideal candidate in the Church Manual: “He or she shall have no bad habits, shall have had experience in the Field, shall be well educated, and a devout Christian Scientist” (Man. 63:23–2 (to .)). Mrs. Eddy also describes the rule of conduct for any room where the Christian Science textbook is sold: “No idle gossip, no slander, no mischief-making, no evil speaking shall be allowed” (Man. 81:23). The Librarian and all Associate Librarians strive to uphold this standard of conduct. In support of this healing activity, the Associate Librarian prays for and metaphysically defends the mission and activity of The Mother Church Reading Room.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Visual Merchandising
• Is responsible for proposing concepts and implementing all visual merchandising for The Mother Church Reading Room.
• Designs and installs the visual merchandising displays in the windows and interior of The Mother Church Reading Room.
• Keeps abreast of the latest periodicals and any other product news from the Christian Science Publishing Society, conceiving and implementing timely rotating displays that will attract interest and impel visitors to explore further.
• Responsible for the planning, purchase, and acquisition of all necessary supplies for creating displays within budget.
• Works closely with Mother Church service departments to design and order all printed materials and to install all signage and visuals for displays.
• May be asked to give input and collaborate with other departments who are developing window and promotional materials for use in other Reading Room in the Field.
Community Engagement
• Prayerfully embraces the following words as a guide to their work: “The best spiritual type of Christly method for uplifting human thought and imparting divine Truth, is stationary power, stillness, and strength; and when this spiritual ideal is made our own, it becomes the model for human action.” (Retrospection and Introspection, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 93:13)
• Is keenly tuned in to current needs in the community and shares this knowledge through high-level written and verbal reports to the Reading Room staff in order to engage their prayers and inform the ongoing activities of the Reading Room, including events and product merchandising. May also provide similar reports to other church employees or departments.
• Regularly collaborates with The Mother Church Public Activities Community Team (PACT) to contribute to and support its ongoing objectives in the spirit of working as “one church.” Attends community events when appropriate for Reading Room involvement.
• Regularly communicates with the Committee on Publication Office, especially the Massachusetts Committee, to be aware of the public landscape of thought regarding Christian Science and to prayerfully address “impositions on the public in regard to Christian Science, injustices done Mrs. Eddy or members of this Church” (Manual 97:16–20).

• Is keenly tuned in to current needs in the community and shares this knowledge through high-level written and verbal reports to the Reading Room staff in order to engage their prayers and inform the ongoing activities of the Reading Room, including events and product merchandising.
