Organizational background...
The Silicon Valley Urban Debate League (SVUDL) empowers high school students, regardless of their race or socioeconomic status, to reach their full potential to become professional and community leaders by teaching critical thinking and communication skills through Speech and Debate programming.
The Silicon Valley Urban Debate League (SVUDL) was founded in June 2014 by a coalition of local educators and community leaders to fill a startling gap in educational opportunities in the high-poverty schools of San Jose and the Peninsula. Initially SVUDL reached out to schools, districts, and community partners to assess the demand for debate as a solution for students who were disengaged from academics. The enthusiasm of their response was overwhelming, and the wave of demand inspired us to grow quickly. Starting with two pilot programs in August 2014, SVUDL launched three more programs in the Fall of 2015, three more in the Fall of 2016, and now partners with 13 high schools in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, serving more than 550 students through both in-class coursework and afterschool programming.
Short Project Description
SVUDL helps high school students from low-income backgrounds in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties tap the power of their voices to compete, excel, and change the world through the academic sport of Speech and Debate. SVUDL has been working with high school partners in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties over the last eight years and has reached thousands of low-income students of color with the opportunity to learn critical thinking skills, self-efficacy, persuasive communication skills, teamwork, and other important life skills that have resulted in academic success. As the organization strives to address educational equity issues in Silicon Valley, SVUDL is looking to how it can have even greater impact.
In the Fall of 2022, SVUDL’s Board of Directors approved the organization’s 2023-2025 Strategic Plan. This plan will guide the organization to expand its footprint and impact over the next three years by continuing to implement its tried and tested program model. At the same time, SVUDL will continue to evolve its programming to not only ensure high, measurable impacts on students, but also substantially increase the number of students from low-income backgrounds who participate in SVUDL programming.
To accomplish this work, the plan outlines four key priorities that will continue to deepen and broaden our impact on youth from low-income backgrounds living in Silicon Valley.
• Strategic Priority #1: Scale SVUDL programs utilizing a multi-pronged approach that maximizes participation with school and community partners.
• Strategic Priority #2: Build a community of educators who will broaden SVUDL’s reach and deepen impact.
• Strategic Priority #3: Expand impact measurements and share them with the community to earn and grow philanthropic investment and institutional and community support.
• Strategic Priority #4: Evolve organizational capacity to support efficient, impactful growth and contribute to the overall financial sustainability of the organization.
This project would address the third and fourth Strategic Priorities by developing and executing a comprehensive marketing and communications plan that highlights the impact of SVUDL’s programming and amplifies student voices to solidify, diversify, and expand its donor base.
During its prior strategic plan, SVUDL developed efficient systems to track and communicate on the outputs of its program (i.e., number of students served, number of events attended, etc.) As part of this project, SVUDL will work to share the program’s positive relationship to students’ outcomes (i.e., GPAs, test scores, graduation rates, matriculation into higher education, etc.). In addition, SVUDL will also share quantitative improvements on students’ (self-reported) changes in attitude and behaviors as it relates to competition, public speaking, civic engagement, and future outlook. SVUDL will compare its impact and success to local and national studies and data sets, seeking to surpass benchmarks outlined in those resources.
Without a clear marketing strategy, SVUDL has not been able to reach its full potential as an organization. As the organization embarks on a new strategic plan it is more important than ever to use its resources effectively and efficiently to elevate the organization as a leader in education and build community support, most especially beyond the legal field which has traditionally (and generously) supported SVUDL’s efforts.
Project Requirements And Project Objectives
This is often the lengthiest section of the RFP, as it describes the characteristics that define a successful outcome in your estimation. Keep in mind that, in general, specific, closed questions are easier to evaluate and score than open-ended ones. The following are some suggestions that might help you when writing this section:
• Define your audience.
• List required and desired features.
• Note any system integration needs.
• Indicate any preferred tools or systems.
• Clarify whether you are seeking interface design, back-end development, or both (if applicable).
The plan will identify SVUDL’s target markets and define the value proposition for each audience, create specific messages and collateral within an editorial calendar, and propose campaign ideas and activities aligned with SVUDL programmatic activities. SVUDL has benefited greatly from the generosity and support of the broader legal field, and will continue to seek its support. In addition, SVUDL has begun branching out to other professional sectors (ex. professional services) and would like to communicate with them effectively to garner more champions and support.
SVUDL will, for the first time, develop and execute a comprehensive marketing and communications plan that will center on illustrating the outcome-focused impact of SVUDL programming by focusing on messaging around educational equity and the student experience and their success. Inherently, this messaging and strengthening of SVUDL’s brand will feature and elevate the voices of young community members who don’t often get their stories told in assets-focused ways. Telling their stories, and strengthening SVUDL’s stature within the community in the process, invites further investment and financial support from community members to thereby deepen the organization’s work and impact. This plan, that will also serve as a guide for future years, will feature a timeline of activities and be comprised of key messages and collateral that will serve as a guide for SVUDL to create organizational change and strengthen our efforts to empower Silicon Valley students, regardless of their race or socioeconomic status, to reach their full potential and become professional and community leaders. The plan will also incorporate and be created in the spirit of SVUDL’s organizational values.
Strategies: Using this plan, SVUDL will deploy the following strategies to grow the organization.
• Use engaging collateral and multiple marketing channels to expand the visibility of the organization in Silicon Valley to promote educational equity for all students,
• Communicate effective messages to connect current supporters more closely to the organization’s work to grow relationships and commitment to increase revenue and volunteer support, and
• Build brand awareness and credibility with new funders to diversify the donor base beyond areas less directly associated with competitive debate (i.e., law firms) to new areas of interest.
Project budget
Selected consultant will be paid up to $50,000 for their time and expertise on this project. This budget is not inclusive of payment for designer, copywriter, photographer, and videographer to update website, produce new materials, secure new photos and videos, etc.
Milestones and deadlines
• RFP deadline: April 14.
• Candidate Interview period: April 17 to April 28.
• Selection of consultant/partner: completed by May 15.
• Orientation period: May 15 to June 16. This period will allow the consultant to get to know SVUDL, its programming, and current marking and communications efforts. This presumes time for consultant to conduct interviews, focus groups, etc. with SVUDL champions and stakeholders.
• Delivery of robust marketing and communications plan: July 10.
• The SVUDL team will execute on the plan thereafter.
