Summary

The Department of Human Services (DHS) Program Assistant is responsible for providing social services to program recipients and support for families. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Functions

Teaches and demonstrates living skills to clients, such as budgeting, cooking, menu planning, housekeeping, and child care. Transports clients and/or family members for medical, dental, educational, and counseling appointments. Aides clients in locating resources by contacting organizations or agencies for assistance. Assists with developing and monitoring behavior plans, parenting/anger management classes, and maintaining narratives detailing action taken on behalf of the client/family. Participates in training clients in employment skills by providing materials and tools, monitoring work assignments, and providing direct assistance when needed. Attends staff and mandatory trainings. Schedules, monitors, and documents family visits. Special Work Conditions: On-call twenty-four (24) hours a day to provide consultation and advice to staff and to work through complex issues. Coverage of 9 county offices within the Area and ability to drive to each of those. The Program Administrator primary responsibility is to support permanency and strengthen child safety in the Area. Area 7 has 9 county offices. The Program Administrator completes Permanency Safety Consults for each foster care case to ensure that children in foster care move through the foster care system safely and swiftly. For the past year, there was an average of 303 foster care cases in Area 7, which each of those have to have at least 4 Permanency Safety Consults completed each year. The Program Administrator is seen as a coach and leader of the area. The Program Administrator is also an extension of the Area Director and provides critical support and fills in as their designee when absent or needed. Other in state or out of state travel may be required as well as needed.

Preferred Qualifications: The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in social work, sociology, psychology or a related field; plus five years of experience in child welfare with knowledge of Safety Organized Practice, Structured Decision Making and Team Decision Making. Two years in a supervisory role within child welfare is preferred as well.
