You probably think of PolitiFact as the website that fact-checks politicians and rates their claims using the Truth-O-Meter on PolitiFact.com. But we also have built a sizable business working with social media companies to help fact-check claims and posts online, so that their platforms highlight more accurate... content.
The Assistant Editor of Research will staff fact-checking requests that come from the tech platforms. We’re looking for someone who is detail-oriented, has a background in journalism, and has experience managing a team of reporters/researchers.
The Assistant Editor also would be asked to help with our public-facing fact-checking — line editing fact-checks of the day’s news and follow our established procedures for quality control.
Candidates must have excellent judgment and embrace PolitiFact’s core values of accuracy, independence, transparency, and fairness. (Read PolitiFact’s “The Principles of the Truth-O-Meter” for more details.)
This is a one-year project-funded full-time position. This position is eligible for remote employment.
PolitiFact is part of the Poynter Institute a nonprofit, non-partisan organization that has long represented the gold standard for the professional development of journalists. We help journalists improve their craft, commit to the highest ethical practices, hone career ambitions, and develop newsroom strategies. In addition to our training and development programs, Poynter is also home to The Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership, The International Fact-Checking Network, and our media literacy program, MediaWise.
We’re biased, of course, but Poynter is a great place to work.
We offer:
Generous paid time off, seven designated paid holidays, plus two weeks paid leave at the end of every calendar year;
403(b) retirement plan with 1% employer contribution of eligible compensation;
Paid Parental Leave benefit allows for up to 24 weeks of compensated leave for birth moms;
Paid Parental Leave benefit allows for up to 16 weeks of compensated leave for spouses, partners, and adoptive parents;
Free access to Poynter’s online training catalog.

No phone calls, please.
Send a cover letter and resume via email to hiring6@poynter.org.
