Role

The Custodian maintains facilities in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness, and safety to maximize and optimize facility use by students, staff, and visitors.

Essential Functions

Reporting directly to the Principal, Assistant Principal, Building Manager, or their designee, the Custodian performs the following duties:
• Consistently perform daily custodial tasks in assigned area including: empty trash and recycle containers, remove visible dirt and debris from floors, wet mop all hard surface floors, rearrange furniture, and clean and sanitize restrooms, locker rooms, and drinking fountains.
• Consistently perform periodic custodial tasks in assigned area including: low and high dusting, window cleaning, wiping down furniture and work surfaces, burnishing tile floors, and washing walls.
• Perform seasonal tasks including: snow and ice removal, salt spreading, grass mowing, line trimming, mulching, raking, policing grounds for trash, and weeding.
• Perform deep cleaning tasks including: refinishing tile floors, refinishing wood floors, high cleaning from a ladder or man lift, washing furniture, and deep cleaning carpet.
• Perform as-needed custodial tasks including: graffiti removal, replacing light bulbs and ceiling tiles, unclogging plumbing fixtures, painting, minor repairs on custodial equipment, and minor maintenance and repair of building furniture and equipment.
• Consistently maintain assigned area at or above a level of cleanliness rated as “good” or higher on the Custodial Services Inspection.
• Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities throughout the facility on an ongoing basis.
• Lock and unlock assigned buildings and rooms. Secure facility when not in use: checking for unlocked doors/windows/gates, arming alarm, turning off lights, and report unauthorized occupants for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss, and/or potential liability.
• Consistently reports promptly for work, utilizes time wisely, and maintains an acceptable pattern of attendance that must not adversely affect the overall productivity of the group, infringe on coworkers, or adversely impact the overall cleanliness of the facility.
• Consistently responds positively to change while showing a willingness to learn new ways to accomplish work.
• Consistently display an attitude of teamwork/cooperation/professionalism along with an ability to follow both written and verbal directions with minimal follow up.

• Monitor activities in and around all work areas for the purpose of preventing injuries and insuring site safety.
• Operate powered work platforms, man lifts, forklifts, tractors, snow blowers, lawn mowers, and string trimmers according to applicable regulations and safety procedures.
• Operate, inspect, and maintain tools and equipment for the purpose of insuring availability in safe operating condition.
• Communicate immediately any unsafe working condition, broken equipment, or any issue requiring the submission of a work order.
• Works in a safe and efficient manner at all times and reports all incidents to the lead or assistant lead where conditions or working habits of others may be unsafe for staff, students or others.

Role

Under direction, the Water Treatment Superintendent is primarily responsible for the operation, testing, and maintenance of well water systems; and the testing and correction of system-wide water quality. The Water Treatment Superintendent manages the water treatment operations, supervises all water treatment personnel, coordinates assigned activities with other, outside agencies, and the general public. Provides highly responsible and complex staff assistance to the Manager of Environmental, Health, and Safety on water treatment and environmental, health, and safety issues.

Can serve as primary liaison between FCPS and State and local agencies having authority over public water.
• Provides oversight and control of credit cards, cellular phones, radios, uniforms, vehicles, equipment, and materials used by employees under his/her supervision.
• Check and calibrate all testing equipment to ensure proper and accurate operation and condition. Test and sample water for suspected irregularities and make appropriate changes to treatment programs to meet and maintain safe drinking water standards. Maintains records and logs and submits to regulatory agencies, as required.
• Understand, interpret, and enforce occupational health and safety standards and procedures for employees under his or her supervision and supports the safety training and safe work practices of all water treatment employees. Ensures that work areas are maintained in a clean, safe and sanitary manner in accordance with FCPS accepted standards, policies and procedures.
• Monitor and evaluate evolving water-treatment-related regulations and develop plans to accommodate same. Evaluate proposed changes to facilities that may affect water treatment facilities, processes, and equipment sets.
• Instruct, assist, and advise others in issues affecting water treatment and water quality. In collaboration with the Manager of Environmental, Health & Safety, develop requirements, processes, and documents related to same.
• Procure equipment, materials, and services associated with water treatment and water quality functions. Tasks include: developing equipment replacement plans, evaluating existing and new products and technologies, developing bid specifications, and supporting necessary Purchasing Department processes and actions.
• Provide project management for water treatment and water quality projects. Tasks include: defining project requirements, developing project scope, costing, procurement, coordination of FCPS and contracted resources, supervision, and control, inspection, and closeout.
• Prepare and execute emergency utility recovery plans that serve to eliminate health hazards associated with water quality, and minimize the potential that water system failure will lead to facility closure in collaboration with the Manager of Environmental, Health & Safety.
• Inventory water-treatment-related systems and make recommendations to the Manager of Environmental, Health & Safety to develop and execute plans for the improvement, maintenance, and repair of same.
• Use and support the computer-based maintenance management system by establishing and updating asset inventories, maintaining maintenance and repair records, tracking and inputting job costing, processing work and service orders, and producing and evaluating system reports.
• Develop and enact the skills necessary to assist the Manager of Environmental, Health & Safety to investigate and resolve a wide variety of Environmental, Health & Safety issues that pose hazards to FCPS staff, students, and other building occupants.

Required Qualifications

Performs related work as required.

Education/Training/Experience
• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Required certification as issued by the Maryland Department of the Environment. Specifically: Superintendent’s Certificate (Water Treatment) – at a level commensurate with FCPS treatment requirements. Water Treatment Operator’s Certificate (Water Treatment) – at a level commensurate with FCPS treatment requirements. May hold a lower level (less-that-required) Operator Certificate upon hire, with the requirement to obtain the required level within two (2) years of hire.
• Working knowledge of computer software including: internet search engines, spreadsheets, databases, word processing and e-mail.
• Minimum one (1) year experience supervising at least one (1) other employee.
• Current Water Operator Certification Class 3.
• Three (3) years experience operating as a WTO class certification 3 or equivalent experience.

Certification/License

Valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a vehicle in accordance with Board of Education policies.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
• Comprehensive knowledge of methods, equipment, tools, and procedures of water treatment; working knowledge of the trades involved in plumbing; knowledge of project management and procurement. Ability to effectively plan maintenance service programs and applying appropriate policies, supervise field and shop maintenance activities; ability to complete maintenance reports, maintain effective record-keeping systems and make accurate human resources and cost estimates on maintenance projects. The following are essential: ability to evaluate maintenance programs and activities and to plan and implement programs for the prompt, efficient and effective maintenance of water treatment systems; ability to work under pressure and manage emergency situations and excellent oral and written communications and human relations skills. Use computers and electronic-mail effectively and efficiently in accordance with BOE policies. Use the computerized maintenance management system to inventory assets, and manage and prioritize tasks.
