The summer internship/core mission: Our goals are many. We will put you to work – you will write stories, create photos and videos and contribute to audience engagement. Internships have led to full-time jobs in The Bee's newsroom and in other McClatchy newsrooms.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is between $15.50 and $15.50 per hour. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, relevant education, department equity, training, geography and local wage and hours laws.

The program/supervision/support: Our interns are vital and we value them. The program works this way:
• Internships are 10 weeks, 40 hours per week, and is paid. Schedule could include weekend hours.
• Interns learn how to cover local news, features and business – and more.
• Each intern has an editor who oversees them, guides them and helps solve problems.
• Interns can work in multimedia as well, creating content and crafting social promotion for digital platforms.

Qualifications Include
• The ability to write quickly, accurately and well;
• The ability to monitor and mine various sources for breaking news;
• Solid news judgment;
• An instinctive grasp of what will engage your audience;
• A deep understanding of what drives interest on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms;
• A strong entrepreneurial spirit, good curiosity and high energy;
• A collaborative style that allows you to work comfortably across teams spread throughout the office and company.
• A familiarity shooting photos and video, including the use of entry-level video editing software, is preferred.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in journalism
At least 3 years of experience as a successful leader of a newsroom or a large news team

Job Description and Duties

Under general direction of a Deputy Chief Counsel, the Assistant Chief Counsel is responsible for supervising a group of attorneys involved in a variety of litigation and other legal activities. The incumbent may also coordinate more complex and/or major specialized areas in the Legal Division and/or have statewide responsibility for the Department's legislative program.

The Caltrans Legal Division is comprised of five offices statewide including its headquarters office near the State Capitol in Sacramento and branches in Oakland, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Fresno.

Our overall environment is both supportive and challenging where staff is given substantial responsibility at every stage of their career.

Working Conditions

This position is located in Fresno county.

In-person Application Drop-off Location:

In Person Hiring Event:

While at their base of operation, employees will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial light. However, due to periodic problems with the heating and air conditioning, the building temperature may fluctuate. Will have to perform work duties in different court rooms throughout the state and therefore, this position does require travel.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s current telework policy. While Caltrans supports telework, in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksite with minimal notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate may be required to conduct business travel on behalf of the Department or commute to the headquartered location. Business travel reimbursements considers an employee’s designated Headquarters Location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
