Reporting to the dean for student development, the assistant dean for the residential experience provides vision, direction, and leadership for a 3,000-bed, on-campus housing department. This portfolio includes housing operations (assignments, contracts, keys, conferences), residence life (living-learning communities, educational programming, crisis management and response, conduct, student leadership), and financial management. The assistant dean will develop a comprehensive strategic direction inclusive of budget development, programmatic innovation, and risk management approaches informed by Gonzaga’s Jesuit, Catholic mission and the priorities of the division of student affairs. Students at Gonzaga are required to live on campus for their first two years.

Reporting directly to the assistant dean are the director of residence life and the associate director of housing operations. The department has 12 additional full-time professional staff and 120 undergraduate paraprofessional staff. The assistant dean leverages a $4.7 million budget to support a positive residential experience for Gonzaga students.

A master’s degree and eight years of progressively responsible leadership in the field of housing and residence life are required. A demonstrated commitment to creating equitable and inclusive living, learning, and working environments that accelerate the success of students and employees is essential to lead a diverse team in a department with complex functions. Qualified candidates must have foundational budget and finance experience, as well as knowledge of national trends and best practices in campus housing, residence life, and student affairs.

A successful candidate will have an advanced understanding of occupancy management and enhancing revenue opportunities. Additionally, previous experience in Jesuit or other faith-based or mission-oriented higher education, which values the on-campus residential experience to develop the whole student, is ideal. Experience successfully implementing faculty partnerships, residential education models, living-learning communities, and other co-curricular approaches to student learning is strongly favored. A terminal degree is preferred.

Reporting to the vice provost for student affairs, the dean for student wellbeing advances a vision that prioritizes student wellbeing and flourishing as a foundation for student success at Gonzaga University. The dean serves as a leading advocate and advisor for student wellbeing through strategies designed to meet the ever-changing needs of an increasingly more diverse generation of students. They demonstrate expertise while working collaboratively with others across the university and the Spokane community to advance university initiatives and student affairs’ goals for student learning and success.

The dean provides direction and oversees approximately 40 staff responsible for responding to issues critical to students’ educational experiences and holistic development. The dean addresses inequities in access to student support services by developing policy and practice solutions. The dean leads, advocates, and supports the design, development, implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement of programs and services that promote student wellbeing and flourishing. The dean’s administrative portfolio includes budgetary management of almost $2.5M and oversight for the following areas: center for cura personalis (student outreach and support), student health, counseling and wellness, and the resolution center for student conduct and conflict. In addition, there is a newly created associate dean position that may oversee student care, advocacy and resolution, however, this position’s scope of responsibilities has been intentionally left open for consideration by a new dean.

A master’s degree in health, counseling, wellness, student affairs administration, higher education, or a related field; significant and progressive relevant and progressive leadership experience, with a track record of success are required. The successful candidate must demonstrate expertise serving a complex and diverse student community, experience articulating and implementing collaborative models of care, and a strong commitment to creating equitable and inclusive campus environments, systems, programs, and policies.

The CLEC Visiting Scholar designation provides opportunities to engage in rigorous academic legal scholarship, and a Visiting Assistant Professor who holds the designation will receive a one-course reduction in teaching load, professional development funding, research assistance, mentorship, and other scholarship support. The CLEC Visiting Scholar is expected to produce a substantial scholarly work, i.e., a full-length law review article or equivalent, in addition to attending and participating in scholarship-related activities at the law school.

Essential Functions

1. Instructional Duties
• Teach law school courses in areas of expertise, including Legal Research & Writing courses, Torts, Contracts, Constitutional Law, Property, and/or Business Law courses; additional areas include First Amendment, Privacy Law, Environmental, Water, and Climate Law, Informatics and Applied Technology; and Civil Discourse.
• Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, course materials, and methods of instruction for law students.
2. Professional Development
• Contribute to the intellectual exchange of ideas, enrich teaching, and educate the profession about the law.
• Engage in continuing professional development as a member of the academic community, including through working with CCHR and CLEC, Gonzaga Law's two academic centers.
• For Visiting Assistant Professors with the CLEC Visiting Scholar Designation, professional development as a scholar includes:
• publication of legal scholarship;
• presentations to academic, professional, and community groups;
• participation in activities of regional, national, or international professional organizations;
• participation in workshops or seminars; and
• selection for grants, fellowships, and awards.

3. Administrative Duties

Devote some time to non-teaching activities essential to the operation of a law school committed to excellence. Responsibilities may include:
• attending workshops and events;
• advising law students;
• maintaining regular office hours;
• complying with ABA and University policies; and
• cooperating with the school's efforts to comply with applicable law.

Minimum Qualifications
• Juris Doctor or equivalent degree earned from an ABA-accredited law school or its equivalent by July 1, 2023;
• Demonstrated record of academic achievement;
• Superior recommendations;
• Demonstrated record of excellent teaching or an ability to become an excellent teacher; and
• For Visiting Assistant Professors with the CLEC Visiting Scholar Designation, evidence of scholarly research agenda and potential for scholarly excellence.

Desired Qualifications
• One law review publication or its equivalent;
• Six months experience teaching at a law school or in a legal clinical setting;
• Scholarly and/or professional alignment with CCHR and CLEC, Gonzaga Law's two academic centers.
• Twelve months experience practicing law in one or more areas of our current curricular needs;
• Demonstrated teaching effectiveness including responding to the academic needs of learners from underrepresented communities and those with diverse backgrounds and experiences;
• Excellence in interpersonal communication, leadership, collaboration, innovation, and organizational skills; and
• Commitment to collegiality, evidence of self-awareness, and appreciation for humor, including the ability to laugh at one's self.
