Responsibilities:

Direct the activities of the newsroom and its employees.
Work with the editor/executive editor to plan stories/ visuals and ensure deadlines are met, establishing an agile and responsive news organization.
Lead and help execute and edit enterprise and investigative reporting projects for all publishing platforms.
Be a player-coach with a hands-on leadership style, demonstrating strong journalism values, creativity and agility.
Drive reader loyalty by focusing on audience needs and interests; employ journalistic practices that elicit community conversation and interaction.
Create and maintain a healthy workplace that values clear communication, respect, inclusion, innovation and urgency.
Encourage consistent use of alternative content forms and emerging tools/ technology for all digital publishing platforms, including the website, e-edition and social media.
Pursues strong working relationships with others within and outside the company; play an active and collaborative role in the company’s growth strategies.
Supervises employees, establishes schedules and conducts performance reviews; onboarding of new newsroom employees.
Communicate regularly with FCC content teams and collaborate on content projects with FCC state and regional teams; Communicate story/visual plans for the print edition to relevant production teams to ensure a high-quality publication that meets all deadlines.
Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communications or related field.
Newsroom and editing experience preferred.
Five years experience in a newsroom setting or equivalent combination.

• Working independently to identify storytelling opportunities and planning coverage with Forum News Service editors for a mix of daily and enterprise reporting suitable for multiple platforms.
• Organizing materials, determining focus and writing stories according to prescribed editorial style and format standards for media websites, newspapers and social media.
• Responding to breaking news or stories of high-importance from Bismarck.
• Embracing a creative, collaborative approach with other team members and in working with other FCC departments and locations.
• Photography skills and a willingness to produce video stories.

QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education in journalism and experience in a professional newsroom.

• Ability to work on a deadline, handle sensitive and emotional situations, balance competing demands, set priorities and juggle several issues at once.

• Journalism or communications degree is helpful, though equivalent experience will be considered.

• Ability to work in a team environment, as well as independently, and prioritize tasks.
• Must be able to multitask and juggle many different projects in a fast-paced environment.
