The Associate Director of External Communications is a key member of a cross-functional Development and Marketing and Communications team contributing to Heartland Alliance’s success in achieving the department’s goals. Essential Functions:

Duties & Responsibilities

• Plays a lead role in external (PR/media relations, story curation, reputation management) communications development and execution to increase awareness and affinity of Heartland among key external audiences.

• Leads the communications editorial strategy and planning.

• Oversees all reactive and proactive media relations efforts and manage agency support.

• Compiles, analyze, and interpret analytics to measure media/PR impact, trends, and strategies and opportunities to reach new audiences.

• Drives story-telling efforts and support content curation that uplifts participant voices and reinforces our mission and key organization focus areas.

• Protects, preserves and promotes HA’s reputation through crisis communications support and proactive thought leadership.

• Participates in overall marketing, communications, and development strategy planning.

• Serves as a key member of the development, communications and marketing department at fundraising events, especially signature Heartland Alliance functions. Events may require occasional work outside of standard business hours.

• Manages a portfolio of projects both independently and as a member of project teams.

• Manages risks, and changes to the project scope, project schedule, and project costs.

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, advertising, liberal arts, journalism required

• 6 years relevant experience required

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (K/S/A):

• Exceptional verbal, written and grammar skills

• Experience in multimedia communications and marketing required

• Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, Photoshop) - experience with Premiere Pro or an equivalent video editing software - preferred

• Website experience a plus

• Excellent project management and organizational skills, ability to prioritize and multi-task in fast-paced environment
