What you will be doing

As an Inspector of Historic Buildings and Areas you will be joining the multi-disciplinary Development Advice Team. You will take delegated responsibility for the delivery of our advice on proposals for change in the historic environment acrossYorkshire, providing advice on the sustainable management of the historic environment.

As a key member of the Development Advice Team, you will use... your knowledge to provide planning and sustainable management advice in relation to buildings (both secular and ecclesiastical), historic places, areas and designed landscapes, providing advice in response to pre-application and formal consultations across the fascinating historic environment.

• A good understanding of relevant Government policy, guidance and statutory procedures for the historic environment in the planning system, including LBC and Ecclesiastical Exemption

What you will be doing

Strategy

You will support the Marketing Manager in the delivery of marketing plans against key objectives in Historic England’s Corporate Plan including increasing our relevance and brand awareness; and encouraging people to see the historic environment as part of their everyday lives, and to get involved.

You will work with the Marketing Manager in the delivery of Historic England’s work in encouraging Active Participation as part of our Future Strategy.

Delivery

You will work collaboratively and build relationships with team members across Public Engagement in order to deliver... marketing activity for key projects and programmes, work with the Content team to develop multi-platform content and engagement opportunities to improve customer journeys and acquire and process data in compliance with policies and regulations.

You will provide copywriting and proofreading skills for collateral and campaigns, ensure the delivery of audience insight and research, as well as development and roll-out of Historic England’s Audience System in order to drive participation and increase brand awareness.

The role will work with the Marketing Manager in identifying engagement opportunities and work with key partners/stakeholders to generate campaigns and progress brand marketing opportunities

You will work with Head of Creative Studio in developing and refreshing Historic England’s visual identity, work with colleagues in the delivery and implementation of multiplatform products including the Digital Asset Management (DAM) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system.

You will monitor the Marketing inbox and deal with enquiries, coordinate incoming briefs and monitor progress against workflows, brief and provide a day-to-day contact with agencies, creative suppliers, contractors and other internal stakeholders to help deliver projects in a timely and efficient manner ensuring quality and brand compliance.

Cross-group working

The role involves working with staff across Historic England to provide advice on the use of the brand and delivery of marketing activity.

You will co-ordinate the briefing and delivery process to effectively and efficiently triage and distribute requests for creative/content scheduling and production, participate in national and cross-group projects which support corporate priorities in such projects as Levelling Up, Climate Change and High Street Heritage Action Zones.

Learning

You will develop knowledge and awareness of all the areas of work undertaken by Historic England and offer professional marketing services to internal and external customers, keep up with new marketing and brand developments within the heritage and cultural sectors.

What you will be doing

Heritage at Risk Projects Officers will provide expert advice on the planning, funding and delivery of heritage at risk projects across the range of asset types in the South West. Applying the ethos of ‘constructive conservation’ they will work closely with owners, local authorities and with partner agencies to negotiate effective projects, identify funding and facilitate consents. They will report on project progress, update the HAR Register, and contribute to associated administration and public promotion of Heritage at risk cases and themes.

Main duties and responsibilities:

1. To work proactively and creatively with owners, local authorities, statutory bodies, building preservation... trusts, developers and funding bodies etc. to promote a sustainable and viable future for historic assets on the HAR Register and advise and implement strategic and project-based solutions for Heritage at Risk.

2. To work closely with funding bodies (such as Natural England / Heritage Lottery Fund etc.) to identify sources of grant aid (such as Countryside Stewardship Scheme funding) for HAR assets and encourage and facilitate applications for support.

3. To use Historic England’s local and national resources such as grant aid, management experience and specialist resources to achieve long-term reduction in threat to designated assets.

4. To work with owners, Local Authorities and voluntary groups in order to monitor HAR assets and when necessary, encourage their repair/consolidation/reuse. To help colleagues develop and build capacity to tackle Heritage at Risk,

5. To support the maintenance and updating of the local HAR (Heritage Asset Management Database) and Register using information obtained either by Historic England or suitably informed partners and volunteers, or by remote methods such as aerial reconnaissance.

6. To support colleagues in developing and building capacity in the sector to find sustainable solutions for heritage at risk.

7. To assist the Development Advice teams with actions in respect of unauthorised works and damage to heritage assets, as agreed with the Team Leader and in liaison with HE legal advisers and police.

8. To give specialist advice on project planning, recording, archaeological evaluation and building analysis and other investigations leading to repair.

9. To be an effective advocate for the benefit for local places of conserving heritage assets.

10. To support the delivery of Corporate Plan, Regional Plan, Historic England Places Strategy, Public Value Framework, and other national and local strategies as agreed with line management.

11. To undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the grade and competences required of the post requested by line management.

N.B.

Please note that the role requires regular travel to sites not serviced by public transport.

The role may require visiting/inspecting sites which is likely to require climbing scaffolding and negotiating confined spaces (e.g. church roofs etc).

Using new funding from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, additional posts are being created to support Levelling Up through investment in culture. This brings together the support of Arts Council England, Historic England, Sport England, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, The National Lottery Community Fund, Visit England and the British Film Institute through five regional liaison committees.

A team of co-ordinators and advisors will work with... funded councils and organisations to signpost existing guidance, to develop packages of practical support and to offer advice on the alignment of future cultural investment with other funding opportunities.

What you will be doing:

We need you to provide coordinated advice to guide a portfolio of Levelling-Up Fund grant recipients/clients to achieve their funding objectives, both by advising directly and by drawing on expertise from the seven (DCMS) Arms Length Bodies (ALB) and other partners.

You will work in partnership with your Levelling-Up clients, the Levelling-Up Place Coordinators and the Area Towns Groups (ATG). You will co-ordinate your advice with the Levelling Up Delivery Associates (appointed by Department for Levelling Up, Communities and Housing) who will advise on other aspects of these projects.

You will identify the needs and advice you can provide as well as other available expertise and resources that may be offered as a package for each of your Levelling-Up client authorities to aid their funded projects. You will align services from relevant ALBs to deliver inter-agency support.

Part of the role will be identifying opportunities to add value to proposals through culture, heritage, and sport, including enhancing attractiveness to visitors and value for communities.

You may provide advice on topics such as:

master-planning with culture, heritage and sport;

development economics (planning and real estate) with respect to heritage, sport, or arts;

programme/project management (where cultural projects differ from standard practice);

sustainable cultural programming and audience development;

retrofitting (zero carbon) measures;

planning consents.

Within the Archaeological Investigation Team, the AAT has expertise in archive management, digital data creation and archiving as well as publication of the HE Summary

This is a rare opportunity to join our Archaeological Archives Team, which is quite unlike any other in archaeology in the UK. Within the Archaeological Investigation Team, the AAT has expertise in archive management, digital data creation and archiving as well as publication of the HE Research Report Series. Our new Archaeological Archives Curator would not only have responsibility for managing archive material from HE fieldwork projects but also engage with national initiatives such as the Future for Archaeological Archives Programme and the Archaeological Archives Forum. You would also be closely involved in developing enhanced storage facilities at Fort Cumberland.

The Archaeological Investigation Team comprises five teams that include Archaeological Archives, Archaeological Excavation, Geophysics, Landscape Archaeology... and Aerial Survey. As a member of the team you would have scope to inform and influence national initiatives and projects.

What you will be doing

Working with our archaeological teams, including Investigative Science, you will:
• Manage the archaeological archiving process, advising project teams through the course of a project and taking responsibility for completing archive compilation and transfer
• Carry out collections management, including: documentation; loans and returns; monitoring the conditions in our stores; facilitating access to collections
• Advise on and help to progress our programme of project completion and archive transfer, working especially with the English Heritage Trust
• Manage short-term staff to assist with the work of the Archaeological Archives Team
• Work with the Archaeological Archives Principal in setting and maintaining standards in archaeological archives, sector liaison, research and outreach, project assurance

What we are looking for
• An academic and/or professional qualification, or equivalent experience, in archaeology, museum studies or archaeological collections management or a closely related subject

• Experience in collections management, including documentation, storage systems and storage environments

What you will be doing

Heritage at Risk Projects Officers will provide expert advice on the planning, funding and delivery of heritage at risk projects across the range of asset types in the South West. Applying the ethos of ‘constructive conservation’ they will work closely with owners, local authorities and with partner agencies to negotiate effective projects, identify funding and facilitate consents. They will report on project progress, update the HAR Register, and contribute to associated administration and public promotion of Heritage at risk cases and themes.

Main duties and responsibilities:
• To work proactively and creatively with owners, local authorities, statutory bodies, building preservation... trusts, developers and funding bodies etc. to promote a sustainable and viable future for historic assets on the HAR Register and advise and implement strategic and project-based solutions for Heritage at Risk.
• To work closely with funding bodies (such as Natural England / Heritage Lottery Fund etc.) to identify sources of grant aid (such as Countryside Stewardship Scheme funding) for HAR assets and encourage and facilitate applications for support.
• To use Historic England’s local and national resources such as grant aid, management experience and specialist resources to achieve long-term reduction in threat to designated assets.
• To work with owners, Local Authorities and voluntary groups in order to monitor HAR assets and when necessary, encourage their repair/consolidation/reuse. To help colleagues develop and build capacity to tackle Heritage at Risk,
• To support the maintenance and updating of the local HAR (Heritage Asset Management Database) and Register using information obtained either by Historic England or suitably informed partners and volunteers, or by remote methods such as aerial reconnaissance.
• To support colleagues in developing and building capacity in the sector to find sustainable solutions for heritage at risk.
• To assist the Development Advice teams with actions in respect of unauthorised works and damage to heritage assets, as agreed with the Team Leader and in liaison with HE legal advisers and police.
• To give specialist advice on project planning, recording, archaeological evaluation and building analysis and other investigations leading to repair.
• To be an effective advocate for the benefit for local places of conserving heritage assets.
• To support the delivery of Corporate Plan, Regional Plan, Historic England Places Strategy, Public Value Framework, and other national and local strategies as agreed with line management.
• To undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the grade and competences required of the post requested by line management.

N.B.

Please note that the role requires regular travel to sites not serviced by public transport.

The role may require visiting/inspecting sites which is likely to require climbing scaffolding and negotiating confined spaces (e.g. church roofs etc).

The role will require occasional attendance at community meetings which are usually held at evenings or weekends.

• A degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline

You will be largely based in the Archaeological Investigation Team's office in York, but the work will involve travel and time spent in a variety of field locations across England and in other specialist offices.

This opportunity will also require outdoor work in all weathers, and planned overnight stays when engaged in fieldwork, training or study.

All travel and subsistence costs for work and training purposes will be paid for by Historic England.

At work (80% of your time) the experience you will gain on the job will include:
• Working within an inspiring archaeological team within a large public sector organisation based across multiple offices and locations.

• Learning about the archaeologist's professional duties
• Learning about safe working practices in field and office environments.

What will you learn Your training elements will include a specially designed programme of taught and hands-on experience that will include regular site visits, training sessions and online learning.

This will give you helpful background heritage knowledge that you will be able to use and apply at work, allowing you to develop a range of professional skills that will benefit your overall career development.

These will include aerial mapping and interpretation of archaeological landscapes, archaeological excavation and finds processing, analytical earthwork survey and geophysical survey of archaeological monuments.

You will be supervised by a line manager and mentored by a variety of staff including your wider team, a personal mentor and our dedicated Early Careers team.

You will also have regular contact with other apprentices to share your experiences through your apprenticeship at Historic England.
