ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is a nonprofit organization that works to ensure the stable and secure operation of the internet. ICANN is responsible for coordinating the global internet’s Domain Name System (DNS), as well as allocating IP addresses. It also serves as an international forum for policy issues related to the internet’s technical operations. ICANN was founded in 1998 to replace the US Government’s role in the DNS. It is governed by a board of directors from around the world and its activities are monitored by the US Government and other stakeholders. ICANN works to promote competition, choice, and innovation in the internet’s domain name system, while ensuring that the internet remains secure and stable. It provides regulatory oversight of the domain name registration industry, and develops policies and procedures to ensure the efficient operation of the DNS.
