About the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites:
The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites (ISMHS) is a museum system with 12 locations across the state, including the Indiana State Museum in downtown Indianapolis and 11 historic sites across the state. The ISMHS is a forward-thinking, unparalleled resource for learning about and appreciating Indiana and its role in the world. We discover, collect, preserve, interpret, and present artifacts and exhibits that showcase the stories of Indiana's natural and cultural history, art, and science.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $70,000.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
Role Overview:
The Senior Curator helps to advance the museum's mission to be a catalyst for informal lifelong learning that connects the stories of real people, places, and things. The Senior Curator of History and Culture plays a key role within the ISMHS museum system, serving as curator across a broad range of subjects, including popular culture, sports, military history, communications technology, music, performing and literary arts as well as providing curatorial support for historic sites.
You will oversee collection development, research, and interpretation to ensure that activities reflect the institutional mission and move the ISMHS forward. You will be an advisor for exhibition development, educational programs, and historic site preservation and content. You will also ensure adherence to industry standards for stewardship of the museum's artifact collections and historic structures.
The Senior Curator of History and Culture is part of the Curatorial, Collections, and Research division, reporting to the Chief Curator and Research Officer. The position is based in Indianapolis and involves work across Indiana. For more information about ISMHS, please visit indianamuseum.org.
A Day in the Life:
• Provide leadership, stewardship, and accessibility of collections.
• Ensure that section activities are well-integrated across the 12-location ISMHS system.
• Develop curatorial and collections plans.
• Support exhibit programming by contributing ideas, serving on project teams, and supervising curator work.
• Provide support to historic sites and serve as curatorial support in areas of expertise.
• Recommend collection strategies and acquire artifacts, including contemporary and responsive collecting.
• Encourage and facilitate the use of ISMHS collections by external researchers.
• Participate in strategic planning related to the museum's curatorial, collections, research, and interpretive directions.
• Work closely with Development to support donor cultivation, proposals, and grants.
• Develop subject matter expertise.
• Write scholarly articles and present lectures.
• Build and cultivate relationships and partnerships between the museum system, community groups, and individuals.
• Develop relationships with colleagues at peer institutions to share resources and exchange information.
• Supervise staff and volunteers, assigning duties, developing goals, refining collections and conservation strategies, and directing daily operations.

What You'll Need for Success:
Professional Credentials:
• Master's degree in history, American studies, public history, or a related field with knowledge of, and experience working with, the material culture of the United States. Knowledge of Indiana history is a plus.
• Seven to ten years of full-time, relevant curatorial or equivalent experience, and significant supervisory and management experience.
A combination of education and relevant experience that provides the needed knowledge and skills will also be considered.
Skills:
• Passion for museums and the impact they can have in their communities.
• Adherence to professional standards and ethics as set by the American Alliance of Museums, including handling and display of artifacts and specimens.
• Excellent and effective oral and written communication skills
• Effective public speaking skills and ability to engage with a diverse range of audiences.

Job Summary: The Curatorial Assistant is a member of the Curatorial, Collections, and Exhibition Division (CC&E). They are responsible for a variety of administrative duties to support the CC&E team in daily activities to further the museum mission and strategic plan. These tasks include budget tracking,
scheduling and calendar management, taking meeting minutes, filing (paper and digital), data entry, exhibition support, answering external and internal information requests, image services (internal and external requests), and some writing and/or editing for related activities including, publications, in-gallery print pieces, marketing and social media.
Job Duties
Office management
• Provide organizational support for curatorial, collections, and exhibitions team, including:
o scheduling and calendar management,
o taking minutes at meetings and distribution
o filing, data entry (collections and curatorial)
• Assisting with tracking department budgets expenses.
o Creating and submitting check request credit card reconciliation, and expense claims.
• Serve as the first point of contact for external requests for information for curatorial, collections,
and exhibitions staff.
• Distribute artist survey forms and enter collected biographical information into the collections
management system.
• Support Curators and Collections staff with data entry in the collections management system.
Adhere to established standards.
• Assist with coordination of the logistics for artist/curator visits, which may include arranging
itineraries, honoraria, travel, lodging, and meals.
Imaging Services
• Provide support in identifying images and securing image rights for publications.
o Acquire copyright clearance for internal use, such as marketing, eMuseum, social media, etc.
• Support external constituent requests for images from our collection.
Exhibitions
• Assists curatorial staff in researching and verifying information for exhibitions, including but not
limited to compiling ID label information from database, researching biographic information
• Quest for the West: Assist the curator and registrar with generating checklist and labels,
communicating with artists, gathering images and biographical information for catalog.
• Assist with exhibition and rotation installations as needed.
• Quest for the West, assist with unpacking, packing, and weekend sale event.
• May be asked to curate smaller exhibitions in Paul and Pulliam galleries depending on
experience.
• Other duties as assigned.
Expectations:
• Support Museum’s goals and values and further the Museum’s mission and the 5 year strategic
plan.
• Give and welcome feedback; contribute to building a positive team spirit.
• Follow policies and procedures; maintain appropriate records, complete tasks correctly and on time.
• Maintain proficiency in all computer related programs to perform job duties.
• Follow safe work procedures.
Experience:
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (specifically, word, excel, outlook)
• Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks and remain flexible with changing priorities
• Some knowledge of object handling
• Some knowledge of collections managements systems a plus
Education: BA required, with a background in Art History, Art, History, Museum Studies or related
subject degree in arts and humanities.
Required Skills: Applicants must be detail oriented and enthusiastic, with excellent computer skills.
Must have good verbal and written communication skills in English and the ability to understand spoken
communications. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Physical Demands: Ability to enter data into a computer and sit for long periods of computer use.
Occasional evening and weekend hours as necessary.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will normally work in
climate controlled environment.
Supervisory Responsibilities: No supervisory duties.
