Georgetown University: Main Campus: College of Arts & Sciences: Philosophy...

Location: Washington, DC

Open Date: Nov 23, 2022

Deadline: Aug 01, 2023 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

Description

The Environmental Justice Program and the Department of Philosophy of Georgetown University seek to appoint a philosopher of Environmental Justice in Fall 2023. We welcome applications from outstanding scholars to be appointed at the Associate Professor level. While the central discipline of interest is Philosophy, we seek a candidate with research foci in some mix of Environmental Science, Climate Science, Distributive Justice, Philosophy of Science, Epistemology of Science. As a member of the Environmental Justice Program (EJP) research community, this position will be invited to contribute to the seminars, working paper series, and other research activities of the EJP.

About the Environmental Justice Program

Georgetown University's Environmental Justice Program brings together researchers from across the social sciences, sciences, and humanities to advance frameworks and solutions for just transitions to ecological sustainability. For this position of Associate Professor, we seek a colleague with an earned PhD in Philosophy, outstanding scholarship, and a keen interest in interdisciplinary environmental work. We seek candidates with a collaborative mindset and who are interested in fostering a highly creative, interdisciplinary research and teaching environment.

EJP builds new integrated dynamical models - which combine financial macro-economics, complexity economics, climate sciences, and geophysics - and studies the political and social conditions of implementation of the fair sustainability scenarios that these models make it possible to identify. The purpose of these models and scenarios is to provide a toolkit to governments, businesses and communities affected by the ecological crisis to guide mitigation and adaptation action and to minimize the impact on marginalized populations.

About the Department of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy is a pluralistic department that contributes centrally to the University's core commitments to “justice and the common good, our intellectual openness, and our international character.” We value and promote a variety of approaches to philosophical reflection, including traditional research in contemporary philosophical problems, the study of the history of philosophy, practically engaged and public-facing philosophy, all in both the Anglophone and international linguistic traditions. We have broad strengths in traditional fields of philosophical inquiry, including ethical theory and practical ethics (especially bioethics), social and political philosophy, philosophy of language, epistemology, and the Catholic philosophical tradition. We are currently building a focus in philosophical approaches to race, as well as philosophical traditions rooted in the thought of disadvantaged or marginalized racial groups.

Qualifications

The disciplinary possibilities are wide, but include an earned doctorate in Philosophy or equivalent along with a keen awareness of issues at the intersection of environmental science, social justice, and ethics, and ability to contribute to their clarification and resolution.

We seek candidates with collaborative mindsets, interested in fostering a highly creative, interdisciplinary research and teaching, including those working on non-traditional interventions. Candidates should have a strong interest in cultivating transdisciplinary dialogue between natural and social sciences focused on climate; a familiarity with the epistemology of natural versus social sciences in light of complexity theory; and a strong interest in helping both academic communities and decision makers think in terms of environmental (especially climate) justice when evaluating different pathways to a sustainable ecological transition.

The tenure home is Philosophy and the appointment will be joint between the Environmental Justice Program and the Philosophy Department, with a secondary appointment in Georgetown University's Earth Commons Institute (https://earthcommons.georgetown.edu)

To Apply:

Candidates should submit a letter of interest, and a current c.v. with contact information for three referees. Applications received by December 23 are guaranteed full consideration, but we will consider all applications received until the position is filled. Questions about the position may be directed to the search committee co-chairs, Gaël Giraud gg707@georgetown.edu or James Mattingly jmm67@georgetown.edu.
