Two postdoctoral research positions (experimental or MD simulation) are available to strengthen our research on DNA-based bilayer mimetics for applications in single-molecule biophysics and structural biology.
Your Profile: You are team-oriented, dynamic, productive, independent and have a PhD degree in biophysics, chemistry, molecular biology, or another relevant area...
The successful candidate for the experimental position has a background in nanoscale lipid bilayer mimetics such as SMALP and MSP nanodiscs, DNA nanotechnology or nucleic acid chemistry. Additional experience with lipid, peptide or DNA chemistry and biophysics, bioconjugation chemistry, membrane proteins or single-particle cryo-electron microscopy would be a plus.
The successful candidate for the computational position has a strong track record in the simulation of biomolecular complexes including lipids, peptides and/or DNA by all-atom MD simulations. Further experience with coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations would be a strong plus. A high degree of independence is expected.
Our Profile: The Schmidt lab at Kent State University is an interdisciplinary, diverse group that is leveraging the programmability of DNA to engineer nanoarchitectures and tools for applications in biophysics, mechanobiology and structural biology. One focus of our lab is the development of DNA-based nanoscale lipid bilayer mimetics for the structure determination of membrane proteins by cryo-electron microscopy. Moreover, we study the mechanics of tightly bent DNA molecules.
Our research program is supported by a prestigious MIRA award (>$2.1 M) from the National Institutes of Health. The laboratory and the shared facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art instruments including a new high-speed AFM. Dr. Schmidt has a strong mentoring record and was honored with an “Outstanding Mentor Award”. Alumni proceeded to independent positions in academia, postdoctoral research positions in top universities, startups or industry.
Kent State University is an “R1” university according to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education and therefore among the strongest research universities in the USA. Kent is a friendly, international college town nestled in the Cuyahoga River valley in beautiful Northeast Ohio, less than 50 miles from Cleveland, 20 miles from Akron and 10 miles from the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and offers an outstanding quality of life.
For more information visit https://www.kent.edu/physics/profile/thorsten-lars-schmidt or contact Dr. Schmidt directly by email tschmi21@kent.edu. Please submit your complete application including: your cv; names, email addresses and telephone numbers of three referees; and university transcripts as one combined pdf file directly to Dr. Schmidt. In your email, please state in your first sentences why your previous experience makes you a good candidate for the position. Review of applications starts in April Show more details...
