The successful candidate for the experimental position has a background in nanoscale lipid bilayer mimetics such as SMALP and MSP nanodiscs, DNA nanotechnology or nucleic acid chemistry. Additional experience with lipid, peptide or DNA chemistry and biophysics, bioconjugation chemistry, membrane proteins or single-particle cryo-electron microscopy would be a plus.

The successful candidate for the computational position has a strong track record in the simulation of biomolecular complexes including lipids, peptides and/or DNA by all-atom MD simulations. Further experience with coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations would be a strong plus. A high degree of independence is expected.

Our Profile: The Schmidt lab at Kent State University is an interdisciplinary, diverse group that is leveraging the programmability of DNA to engineer nanoarchitectures and tools for applications in biophysics, mechanobiology and structural biology. One focus of our lab is the development of DNA-based nanoscale lipid bilayer mimetics for the structure determination of membrane proteins by cryo-electron microscopy. Moreover, we study the mechanics of tightly bent DNA molecules.

Our research program is supported by a prestigious MIRA award (>$2.1 M) from the National Institutes of Health. The laboratory and the shared facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art instruments including a new high-speed AFM. Dr. Schmidt has a strong mentoring record and was honored with an “Outstanding Mentor Award”. Alumni proceeded to independent positions in academia, postdoctoral research positions in top universities, startups or industry.
