Are you an outstanding academic with proven abilities to carry out teaching and research in the area of Global African Studies? Do you have the ambition and vision to help strengthen our interdisciplinary Centre for African Studies and develop its portfolio of activities? Do you want to work at a University with a vision of world-changing research and globally-relevant student education?
The Leeds University Centre for African Studies (LUCAS) was founded in 1964 and is one of the most interdisciplinary centres for African Studies in the UK. It brings together a wide range of expertise from across the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and in recent years it has increasingly engaged with Africa-focused research in Environment, Medicine and Engineering. The Centre also makes an important contribution to student education, diversifying and decolonising the Leeds curriculum by delivering several modules.
LUCAS aims to be at the heart of the University’s engagement with Africa, in... terms of research, education and public engagement. The newly created lectureship in “Global African Studies” is essential to achieving these strategic goals. The lecturer will study Africa as part of the global entanglements (culturally, socially, politically, economically, and/or intellectually) in our contemporary world, and will explore critical issues regarding Africa and its diaspora in their globality, intersectionality, multidimensionality and multi-spatiality.
We seek to appoint a highly qualified individual with a strong research and teaching profile. We welcome applicants from across the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. You will be based in one of the Schools in either the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures, or the Faculty of Social Sciences, but your main responsibilities will be in LUCAS. You will carry out research, teaching and management within the Centre, School, Faculty and University, and you will expand our teaching portfolio and contribute to innovative academic leadership in the field of Global African Studies.
With a PhD (or a demonstrably equivalent level of achievement) in African Studies or a related subject area, you will have a commitment to inter- and trans-disciplinarity, and experience of working in interdisciplinary contexts.

Are you an experienced and influential academic with the proven ability to carry out teaching and research in the art history of the long nineteenth century? Do you have an excellent research track record, proven success obtaining funding and the vision and drive to tackle new challenges? Are you passionate about delivering world-leading research and an exceptional student experience?
As Associate Professor, you will carry out research, teaching and leadership within the school, faculty and university, and contribute to academic development of the art history of the long nineteenth century, with a focus on ecology and environment and/or race and colonialism. We welcome applications from scholars working on any form/s of artistic production in that period, within any geographical framework/s in order to complement existing strengths in the School. Note that preference will be given to candidates whose research engages with questions of ecology and environment, and/or race and... colonialism in the long nineteenth century, but if an exceptional case can be made, the School will consider applicants whose research focus is another area of the art history of the long nineteenth century.
The School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds has a long-established reputation for cutting-edge work in the social history of art (broadly defined and with global perpsectives), with particularly marked engagements in critical feminism, traditions of Marxist thought, Jewish studies, postcolonial theory and critical studies of race and racism. We are seeking candidates with a proven track record in their areas of research and teaching, and with the drive to bring fresh impetus to the School’s intellectual and pedagogic concerns. Teaching will involve both the development of specialist options, and contribution to group-taught modules, including some with a focus on practices of display, and on historiography, methodology and theory.
The School as a whole forms a lively interdisciplinary community. In addition to our work in the history of art, colleagues are engaged in fine art, cultural and media studies, and critically informed work in museums, heritage and engagement practices. In the most recent national Research Excellence Framework exercise, our research environment achieved 100% ‘world leading’ status. We teach significant cohorts of undergraduate and Masters students across a range of linked programmes, and we are host to a sizable number of PhD researchers. The School is part of a large, diverse and forward-looking Faculty encompassing a range of related disciplines in the arts, humanities and cultures.
