Functieomschrijving
Background:

Functieomschrijving
Overweight is multifactorially determined including biomedical, behavioral, environmental, and psychological mechanisms. This project takes a personalized medicine approach, paving the way for personalized interventions. We are planning a large-scale study including people varying in bodyweight, measuring a large set of variables reflecting all involved mechanisms. We will also obtain time-series data of health-related behavior in daily life.
Background:
The NWO VICI project ‘Understanding Overweight and Obesity’ is a 5-year research program, in which researchers from different fields (i.e., psychology, biology, and data science) collaborate. Overweight is the largest and most prevalent modifiable risk factor for health... problems, and significantly contributes to healthcare costs. Researchers generally agree that overweight is multifactorially determined, including biomedical, behavioral, environmental, and psychological mechanisms. There is empirical support for each of these mechanisms, but often evidence is not consistent across studies, effect sizes are modest at best, and variability on outcome- measures across participants in a study is often large. This suggests that contributing factors to overweight likely differ across people. Similarly, treatments for overweight are, on average, only modestly effective and individual variability in weight-loss-response to treatment is large. This project therefore adopts an urgently needed comprehensive individualized approach. We characterize each participant in a large sample of individuals varying in bodyweight by their own baseline comprehensive profile, including person characteristics, biological, psychological, environmental, and behavioral variables. Next, we investigate how baseline comprehensive individual profiles cluster in a meaningful way, and relate to bodyweight at baseline, post-treatment, and follow-up. Moreover, we investigate how these individual profiles translate to behavior in daily life. To do so, we collect time-series data on (un)healthy eating and physical (in)activity, and predictors of these behaviors (e.g., emotions, stress) in daily life.
Research experience is an advantage for this job, but is not strictly required. The position is ideal for people who like the practical aspects of running a research study.
Challenges and tasks:
• In collaboration with our team, you will contribute to the collection of laboratory data, behavioral data, questionnaire data, and time-series data in daily life. Much of the groundwork has already been done, including ethical approval and developing the set of variables to be included in the measurement protocol.
• Participant recruitment, in collaboration with our partner fit.nl and link2trials, and possibly other channels.
• Communication with researchers in the team and collaborators.
• Guiding participants during the measurement day at our centre and performing some of the laboratory tests yourself, such as a physical fitness test.
• Informing and assisting study participants.
• Data collection administration.
Embedding:
This project is hosted by Maastricht University. You will be based at the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience, and will join the research group Eating Disorders & Obesity, which includes approximately 25 members and provides a lively and supportive research environment. You will be supervised by a team of experienced researchers, who jointly have all relevant expertise (biomedical science, psychology, biology and data science).
Functie-eisen
• Fluent in Dutch and English.
• A master’s degree in biomedical science, health science, psychology, or a related field.
• Perseverant and creative problem solver.
• Computer-literate, for example: Excel, Wordpress, and quick to learn new software.
• Excellent communication and organization skills.
• Experience with or willingness to learn blood sampling.

For the ZonMW funded project ‘a biopsychosocial, ecologically valid approach to genital pain’, we are looking for a PhD student with a strong interest in experimental research on genital pain in couples.
We propose a novel approach to study biopsychosocial mechanisms and causal pathways of genital pain in women. By means of a nation-wide survey and ecologically valid experiments using mobile instruments that allow simultaneous assessment of genital arousal and pelvic floor muscle tension, we aim to advance research and treatment of female genital pain conditions.
Functieomschrijving
Background: The ZonMW project is a unique collaboration between science, health care, and technique to develop an evidence-based, integrated, personalized, and user-friendly treatment of female genital pain. The larger project consists of three separate but integrated work packages that together aim to (1) identify biopsychosocial, individual and dyadic risk and... resilience factors across genital pain conditions; (2) examine causal pathways between pain-related fear, sexual arousal, and pelvic floor muscle tension; (3) explore interactions between partners’ sexual responses in relation to genital pain; (4) develop and test the user-experience of wearable instruments for daily pain management; (5) test the added value of home-based instruments, compared to treatment-as-usual to improve pain and sexual functioning. The current PhD project will mainly be directed towards the first three aims.
Challenges and tasks: You will design and coordinate the couple-based, nation-wide survey of individual and dyadic risk and resilience factors across different genital pain conditions. You will design and conduct a series of lab studies (1) examining causal pathways between pain-related fear, sexual arousal and pelvic floor muscle tension using a smart dilator that gradually induces vaginal pressure and (2) studying the interaction between sexual arousal of both partners while sexually stimulating each other using mobile plethysmographs (in the lab and at home) in combination with Experience Sampling Methods. You will work in close collaboration with the other partners of the project: a PhD student at TU Eindhoven who works on a smart watch to register and manage pain in daily life; the engineers of the Maastricht University Medical Center (MUMC+) and TU Berlin who work on the development of the smart dilator; and the clinical researcher at the MUMC+ who will test the clinical application of the smart watch and smart dilator in patients with genital pain.
Functie-eisen
• A (Research)Master’s degree in (clinical) psychology.
• A keen interest in chronic pain and sexology.
• Experience in experimental research and preferably also in psychophysiology and/or partner interactions.
• Well-developed analytical skills and creativity.
• Excellent writing and presentation skills.

For the NWO Gravitation Project ‘New Science of Mental Disorders’, we are looking for a PhD candidate with a strong interest in, and preferably experience with, the network approach to psychopathology.
The network approach to psychopathology defines mental illness as a system of dynamically interacting variables (e.g., symptoms). The goal of this NWO Gravitation Project (www.nsmd.eu) is to take the network approach to psychopathology to the next level, and to critically test its value and usefulness for personalized treatment.
Functieomschrijving
Background:
The NWO Gravitation Project “New Science of Mental Disorders” is a 10-year research program, in which researchers from different fields (e.g., data science, clinical psychology) from different Dutch universities collaborate. The project is divided into six teams.
The currently advertised position is embedded in ‘team network’. This team is responsible for setting up a large-scale data... collection and performing network analyses in a large sample of patients with diverse diagnoses of a mental disorder, in close collaboration with the other five teams, each of which is organised around a theme (e.g., cognitive control, emotional memory). These to-be-collected data will be used for the estimation of individual networks of symptoms and other relevant variables for a great variety of patients. By studying the progression of individual networks over time, we aim to understand how mental disorder systems unfold within people over time.
In addition to contributing to this new data collection in patients, you will perform further analyses on a recently collected dataset in a sample of students from Dutch universities, which served as input for the collection of patient data. This rich dataset includes time-series data of 250 participants on 35+ variables related to psychopathology measured at 224 timepoints, digital phenotyping variables (e.g., activity recognition, GPS), and standardized baseline questionnaires of psychopathology.
Challenges and tasks:
• In collaboration with team network and research support, you will contribute to the collection of time-series data in patients with diverse mental disorders. The groundwork has already been done, including ethical approval and setting up collaborations with mental health clinics, as well as developing the set of variables to be included in the measurement protocol.
• Data fusion and integration, in collaboration with data scientists in our team.
• Performing network analyses in R, in collaboration with data scientists in our team.
• Science communication, including writing of high-quality scientific papers, conference presentations, and societal outreach activities.
Embedding:
Maastricht University is the leading institution of the Gravitation project ‘New Science of Mental Disorders’ (NSMD; www.nsmd.eu), heading an interdisciplinary team with staff members of Dutch universities, divided over 6 teams. This PhD position is embedded in team network of NSMD, and will be based at the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience (FPN). You will collaborate closely with 3 other PhD students and 1 postdoc in team network (based in Maastricht and Leiden), and you will be supervised by a team of three experienced researchers (psychology, measurement, psychometrics). More broadly, you will be embedded in the national NSMD-consortium, offering PhD trainings, meetings, and conferences.
Functie-eisen
• A (Research) master’s degree in (clinical) psychology or a related field.
• Strong statistical skills.
• A keen interest in and preferably experience with network methodology.
• Programming skills, preferably R.
• Well-developed analytical skills and creativity.
• Excellent writing and presentation skills (English).
• Excellent communication and organization skills.
• Speaking Dutch is not a necessity but is an asset.

Are you a curious, data-minded, analytically strong scientist? Are you passionate about academic research and interested in the role of the educational system for developing the skills for the labour market of the future? Then we have the right job for you!
JOB DESCRIPTION
This PhD position is part of a joint research project between the Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market (ROA) of Maastricht University's School of Business and Economics, and the Inspectorate of Education of the Netherlands ( Inspectie van het Onderwijs ). You will work as a PhD candidate within ROA with supervision and collaboration from both ROA and the Inspectorate. You will build your research network within the ROA research community and within the Inspectorate's extensive network of professional and research experts in the field of education in the Netherlands.
Project Description
A successful transition from the education system to the labour market requires several skills that will be in... high demand in the future. With automation and digitalization of tasks in production processes, the demand for non-routine skills (cognitive, interpersonal skills, preferences and the interaction between them) as well as skills related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) will further increase.
Non-routine and STEM skills are currently already in short supply on the Dutch labour market and further shortages are expected. An imbalance between demand and supply of skills has adverse consequences for students, employers and thus the economy and society as a whole. Against this background, the aim of this research project is to study whether school leavers in the Netherlands sufficiently develop skills that will be in demand on the labour market of the future. Overall, the project addresses the following research questions:
• Which skills will be in high demand on the labour market in the future and are they sufficiently reflected in learning objectives and curricula of the Dutch education system?
• To what extent are students given the opportunity to learn these skills in school and do they learn them sufficiently during their school career?
• What are the determinants of students' decision to (further) develop these skills and what is the role of the societal relevance of skills for their motivation to do so?
The research projects allows you to apply a range of methodological approaches, among others text analysis of job vacancies and school curricula, survey research among students and teachers, qualitative interviews as well as field experimental research in school settings. Your work will be interdisciplinary as you need to use and combine insights from labour and education economics, educational science and psychology.
REQUIREMENTS
• You are self-motivated, curious and interested in research;
• You are well-organized and able to work independently;
• You have a strong academic background (e.g., good grades and/or involvement in other academic activities) and willingness to publish in high-ranking academic journals;
• You have excellent quantitative and analytical skills;
• You have excellent oral communication and writing skills in English, knowledge of the Dutch language is a plus;
• You have affinity with empirical analyses on large data sets using survey data and/or natural or field experiments and you are also open for qualitative research methods;
• You are comfortable cooperating and communicating with educational institutions to collect data;
• You have knowledge of statistical software (e.g., Stata, R, Python);
• A preference is given to MSc graduated economists or social scientists who have shown excellence in at least one of the following subjects: labour economics, education economics, (applied) micro-economics.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Fixed-term contract: 4 years.
The intended start date of the appointment is 1 September 2023.
Remuneration will be according to standard salary levels for PhD students starting with a salary of ₠ 2,541 with a yearly growth to ₠ 3,247 gross a month (based on a full-time appointment). Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% of the yearly gross income.
You have to be willing to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings), you will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs and a relocation reimbursement. You have to be willing to participate in the PhD programme of the Graduate School of Business and Economics.
The terms of employment of Maastricht University are set out in the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO). Furthermore, local UM provisions also apply. For more information look at the website www.maastrichtuniversity.nl > About UM > Working at UM .
