The Mine Engineer I performs short term mine production planning and scheduling, development and infrastructure design, mine ventilation design, ground control design, surveying, production quantity calculations and month end mine production reporting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
• Performs short-range mine planning including development design; drift & fill and long-hole stope design; backfill design; scheduling development, production, and backfill; surveying; reconciliation of the schedule and plan with actual; and coordination with long-range mine planning, geology, survey, and mine operations.
• Oversees projects, assists in budget preparation and cost estimations, and tracks costs.
• Works with mine services including power, ventilation, compressed air, and water; assists with design and implementation of ground control and related ground support engineering including various rock bolting methods and shotcrete; optimizes techniques for explosives utilization and storage; ensures technical deliverables are provided to customers within time and quality expectations.
• Plan, organize, and coordinate surveys, tests, or investigations. Collect data points, interpret results, and prepare recommendations. Present executive summaries and cost estimates to senior staff.
• Apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria in making minor adaptations and modifications to established engineering plans or systems.
• Develop and maintain a detailed working knowledge of the mine’s operational issues and apply sound engineering practices to resolve them.
• Provide engineering support and guidance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS include:
• Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university in mine engineering or other relevant technical discipline.
• Experience in mining, metallurgy or mineral processing industry or similar relevant experience preferred.
• Prior experience in mining engineering preferred.

Job Responsibilities And Duties

The Stationary Maintenance Planner will be responsible for aspects of maintenance operations at the Stillwater Mine. This position will have oversight of the Stationary Maintenance department equipment. Ensuring a safe and environmentally excellent setting for the maintenance group is paramount to the success of the Stillwater Mine. Responsibilities will include safety vision, environmental compliance, budgeting practices, achieving operational objectives, planning and execution of quality mine support and cost targets. This person will drive the creation of engaged workplace culture and provide the leadership that promotes continually exploring new technologies to improve worker safety and efficiencies throughout the operations. Collaborate with all departments to ensure effective communications for integrated planning. The successful candidate will represent S-SMC and its values to all employees; coordinate resources and efforts to compliment other areas in realizing overall mine goals, as well as:
• Prioritize and plan preventative maintenance and repairs for all stationary equipment.
• Coach and mentor employees in accordance with S-SMC leadership qualities.
• Work with the crews in continuing the development of a focused and engaged change culture throughout the organization.
• Coordinate with Maintenance Supervisors to ensure effective use of manpower and materials to expedite maintenance repairs.
• Coordinate with Warehouse and Purchasing Departments to ensure parts availability.
• Learn, upgrade, and improve software used for maintenance tracking, forecasting and communications of maintenance schedules. Assure integrity of data.
• Research histories and prepare Asset Management plans for budget preparation.
• Prepare work packages to include conditions and constraints, parts list, and develop best practices step by step job procedures,
• Be proactive in all aspects of the operations; safety, environment, effective and efficient utilization of resources, productivity, business improvement initiatives as an owner, and teamwork across the site.
• Actively support Safety and Health Management and Environmental systems and regulatory compliance.
• Maintain a productive labor relations environment, minimizing unnecessary conflict.
• Demonstrate positive two-way verbal and written communication.
• Work with and schedule outside vendors/contractors to perform work onsite.

Qualifications And Skills
• Lead in commitment, accountability, respect, enabling, and safety including character, teamwork, communication, business sense and vision.
• Solid understanding and applying of MSHA regulations and compliance.
• Proficiency in mine systems, cost management, and productivity enhancement.
• Experience with underground mining methods preferred but not required.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in the preparation of operating and capital budgets.
• Experienced in PC based software programs, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and ERP software (Oracle/JDE or equivalent).
• Ability to drive planning and scheduling of work and then execute on them.
• Define, establish, and set Key Performance Indices (KPI's) and hold groups accountable to KPI's.
• Manage the appropriate levels of labor, equipment, tools, supplies, and materials for each group.

Education & Experience
• Degree in Mine, Civil, Mechanical Engineering, or its equivalent from a recognized institution or meet these standards through proven experience and skillsets.
• Minimum 5 years of relevant maintenance experience.

The majority of your average workday occurs underground, collecting observations and samples, lining out headings, and involves clear and consistent communication with the operations and engineering groups. To thrive in this role, you will provide geologic perspectives in level plan design meetings to optimize grade, extraction rate and safety. We’re on a remote island, you must know how to work independently, identify, and resolve problems in a timely manner.

Here’s What You Can Expect In This Role
• Training first. Every hire is provided MSHA training in the first 4 days on the job. We also provide department-level training on not just what to do, but safety, as well.
• You will effectively provide stope scale (or smaller) structural understanding to predict geologic hazards in front of current face
• Perform fieldwork including mapping and sample ore faces for assaying
• Relocate to Juneau and work on a remote island. You will take a boat commute to work every day. Every department is slightly different, but our Geology department works 8 days on, followed by 6 days off.
• You will participate in map meetings by providing relevant geologic information; along with level plan engineering meetings by providing relevant geologic information.
• Safety is important. Every piece of equipment and each work area must be inspected before work starts. You will promote and personally observe safety procedures.
