Job Description

The Department of Computer Science at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) in Rolla, Missouri, is seeking outstanding applicants for an open-rank teaching faculty position with an appointment start date of Fall 2023 or Spring 2024. The primary duties of the job are:

1) Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses,

2) Advising students, and

3) Service to the department and campus

Teaching faculty may also optionally pursue pedagogical research.

Missouri S&T's Department of Computer Science has a proud 50+ year history of positively impacting society through groundbreaking research and advancing the quality and breadth of its educational mission, granting an ABET-accredited BS, as well as MS and PhD degrees. An active recruitment strategy has resulted in the department now being one of the largest on campus, with over 700 students. Nearly a thousand separate companies sought our Computer Science graduates during the last academic year, including multiple national labs with whom we have long-established hiring pipelines as well as funded research collaborations. The department has nearly 5000 successful and engaged alumni and is strongly supported by the Academy of Computer Science, a 40-member organization dedicated to developing key programs in the department with financial support, and active engagement and advocacy.

The Geoscience, Geological and Petroleum Engineering Department at Missouri University of Science and Technology is seeking a PhD student for a project focused on Carbon Negative Oxalatization Reactions and Critical Mineral recovery. Herein, “oxalatization” represents chemical reactions between oxalic acid and relevant minerals... forming low-solubility alkaline-earth or transition metal oxalate hydrates and carbonates. The research project combines an approach based on geochemical mineral characterization and subsequent numerical modeling of fluid flow processes to study the effects of the in-situ oxalatization on stability, carbon mineralization, and enhanced extractability of energy-relevant critical minerals. The project is supported by the Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy, a United States government agency tasked with promoting and funding research and development of advanced energy technologies.

The ideal candidate will have a Master of Science in geosciences, physics, chemistry, petroleum engineering or relevant disciplines. Applicants having experience in geochemical analysis methods such as XRD, XRF, XPS, SEM and EMPA are highly desired. Additionally, fundamental skills in numerical fluid flow simulation is highly desired. Applicants with experience in CMG and the STARS sub package will receive preferred consideration. While all these skills are desirable, they can all be learned by an ambitious and proactive student with a strong analytical and mathematical background. While housed in the Department of Geosciences, Geological and Petroleum Engineering, the successful candidate will also work directly with researchers in material science, civil, and mining engineering. We favor candidates with independent thinking and strong teamwork skills. . Excellent English communication skills are required. Working hours are flexible and aimed at reaching the project goals. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics consists of 14 tenured and tenure-track faculty and 4 ranked non-tenure-track teaching faculty. The research interests of the faculty range over many areas, including statistics, computational and applied mathematics, analysis and differential equations, and others. The department plays an important role on the engineering-focused campus of Missouri S&T, both in terms of interdisciplinary interactions with other departments and in the training of a large number of undergraduate students in fundamental areas such as calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, and statistics. The department has B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. programs, with about 40 graduate students (the majority being doctoral students) and approximately 80 undergraduate majors.
