PhD Assistantship in Critical Mineral Recovery at Missouri S&T
The Geoscience, Geological and Petroleum Engineering Department at Missouri University of Science and Technology is seeking a PhD student for a project focused on Carbon Negative Oxalatization Reactions and Critical Mineral recovery. Herein, “oxalatization” represents chemical reactions between oxalic acid and relevant minerals... forming low-solubility alkaline-earth or transition metal oxalate hydrates and carbonates. The research project combines an approach based on geochemical mineral characterization and subsequent numerical modeling of fluid flow processes to study the effects of the in-situ oxalatization on stability, carbon mineralization, and enhanced extractability of energy-relevant critical minerals. The project is supported by the Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy, a United States government agency tasked with promoting and funding research and development of advanced energy technologies.
The ideal candidate will have a Master of Science in geosciences, physics, chemistry, petroleum engineering or relevant disciplines. Applicants having experience in geochemical analysis methods such as XRD, XRF, XPS, SEM and EMPA are highly desired. Additionally, fundamental skills in numerical fluid flow simulation is highly desired. Applicants with experience in CMG and the STARS sub package will receive preferred consideration. While all these skills are desirable, they can all be learned by an ambitious and proactive student with a strong analytical and mathematical background. While housed in the Department of Geosciences, Geological and Petroleum Engineering, the successful candidate will also work directly with researchers in material science, civil, and mining engineering. We favor candidates with independent thinking and strong teamwork skills. . Excellent English communication skills are required. Working hours are flexible and aimed at reaching the project goals. Applicants are encouraged to submit a current resume, a research statement documenting their experience and relevance to the project and contact information for 3 references.
