The Editor reads and evaluates reports and/or other materials and documents to determine the extent of editorial problems and shortcomings. Incumbent independently performs complex editing and writing tasks. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
1. Evaluates reports, articles, etc. and helps to shape presentation, restructuring and rewriting as needed. Marks up for composition. Ensures material conforms to organization’s and unit’s standards for style, content, and format. Works with designers, graphic artists, layout specialists, marketing, and production staff on all aspects of production.
2. Negotiates revisions with authors. May network with prospective authors, scientific advisers, and news media.
3. Advises staff and customers on editing and publishing options. Holds meetings to discuss current and future projects. Answers editorial questions. Consults with staff about the progress of reports, articles, or other publications.
4. May have supervisory responsibility for editorial assistants, including hiring, training, and evaluation of work.
5. May coordinate freelance activities in the unit, including finding and coordinating work among freelancers.

Stipend and Benefits
• Fellows who have completed an MA, MS, or MPH/MSPH degree or who are currently enrolled in a doctoral program will receive an annual stipend of $58,000.
• Fellows who have completed a PhD, ScD, EngD, MD, DrPH, or DVM will receive an annual stipend of $63,000.
• In addition to the stipend, each fellow will receive an annual health allowance of $5,500, which will be added to the stipend package.
• Fellows will also receive a $1,500 one-time payment prior to or at the beginning of the fellowship term to defray costs associated with relocation.
• Fellows will receive $5,000 in additional support as reimbursement for tuition and/or fees for professional development courses and activities or for professional travel related to their host office duties.

DEPS' work is organized around four broad areas:
• Unique government missions in defense, space, aerospace, and national security
• National infrastructure challenges such as energy and environmental systems, information and telecommunications, manufacturing and engineering design, civil engineering, and the constructed environment
• Science and engineering disciplines such as physics, astronomy, computer science and engineering, materials science and engineering, and the mathematical sciences and their applications.

The Space Studies Board, established in 1958, provides advice and insight to the federal government (primarily NASA, the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. Congress, and the White House), the space science community, and the general public. The scope of its investigations includes issues and policies related to all aspects of space science. The SSB projects that have the most impact nationally and globally are series of decadal surveys on astronomy and astrophysics, biological and physical sciences, Earth science and applications from space, planetary sciences and astrobiology, and solar and space physics. The SSB also supports standing committees that provide interim guidance on all of the above disciplines; conducts focused, ad hoc studies, workshops, and other activities to supplement the guidance provided by the decadal surveys and standing committees; and serves as the U.S. National Representative for the Committee for the International Council for Science Committee on Space Research (COSPAR).

The Lloyd V. Berkner Space Policy Intern performs administrative tasks such as word processing, copying, faxing, filing, answering and screening calls, and compiling and coordinating mailings. Creates, maintains, and updates records, databases, and files.

Assists with preparations for meetings, including compiling agenda books and briefing materials and providing administrative support for meetings. Registers attendees.

Performs subject-oriented literature searches. Gathers references. May participate in other research efforts including collection, assembly, and tabulation of data and summarizing literature. May assist in analyzing basic research results.

Proofreads and copyedits documents.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to manager/supervisor. Supervisor is available to organize work, set objectives, and to assist in problem resolution.
