DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
Offenders are assigned to various "custody" levels including "Minimum," "Medium," and "Close" which identifies the level of supervision that is required. As such, each Correctional Officer level of classification below corresponds with the custody level of offenders that they will be supervising:
Correctional Officer I: Minimum – Offenders at these facilities require a minimum amount of oversight, they are permitted to enter/exit cells without permission during certain times of the day.
Correctional Officer II: Medium – Offenders at these facilities do not require as much oversight as those at Close facilities but require more supervision than those at Minimum facilities.
Correctional Officer III: Close - Offenders at these facilities always require close supervision. Movement throughout the prison is heavily controlled.

WORK SCHEDULE:
Employees must be able to work any shift including rotating, fixed shift or split shift. All shifts may include days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required.

As in all prison’s we are a 24-hour operation with our Correctional Officers working 12.25 hours. Correctional staff generally work 14 days out of a 28-day period and night shift employees earn extra shift premium pay.

Current State Employees:
The salary grade for Correctional Officer II is a NC06. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
Correctional Officer II's are responsible for ensuring the care, custody, and control of offenders and report to a Correctional Sergeant I and II respectively. Duties of these positions include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Touring assigned areas which will require periodically climbing stairs and standing for long periods of time.
• Observing offenders’ activity in person and on closed-circuit monitors.
• Identifying offenders who have behavioral, medical, or other problems so that appropriate safety and security measures may be taken as needed.
• Performing general security duties to prevent escape, disorder, rule infractions, and harm to offenders, visitors, and staff.
• Searching offenders, visitors, cells and other areas for weapons and contraband.
• Monitoring and regulating offenders' and staff movement.
• Maintaining and recording offender counts, cell assignments, and other pertinent information.
• Escorting offenders within and outside the institution.
• Using and maintaining keys, two-way radios and other equipment.
• Supervising offenders’ work details.
• Performing other special security duties that vary by post assignment.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Employees must be able to work any shift including rotating, fixed shift or split shift. All shifts may include days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required.

The salary grade for Correctional Officer II is a NC06. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.
SALARY INFORMATION:
NCDPS has rolled out a new Step Pay Plan for it's Correctional Officers that has been approved by the NC Legislature. This pay plan offers competitive starting salaries and guaranteed annual increase based on each year of experience as a NC Correctional Officer. Those with prior NC Correctional Officer experience can return to employment with full credit in the pay plan for each of experience as well. (See chart below.)
• Please note that if there are no fully qualified candidates for the Correctional Officer II position, management may consider trainee candidates. * Trainees must successfully meet all requirements in order to move up to the fully qualified Correctional Officer II job classification. Trainee salaries will be less than that of those employees who are fully qualified.
The pay is adjusted when the employee is fully qualified.

The current salary grade for this position is NC10. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. About the Section:
The Alcoholism and Chemical Dependency Program (ACDP) plans, administers, and coordinates chemical dependency screening and substance use disorder treatment services within the NC Department of Public Safety.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:
Experience providing group and individual counseling
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: Credentialed as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC), or as a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist – Associate (LCAS-A), or in an equivalent credential from a governing authority recognized by the NC Addictions Specialist Professional Practice Board
NOTE: To obtain certified status in the CADC credential, one must complete three years of counseling under the supervision of a licensed professional and satisfy these requirements of the NC Addictions Specialist Professional Practice Board (Download PDF reader). Out-of-state applicants with similar credentials from an IC&RC Member Board will also be considered.
In addition, applicants possessing one of these credentials from a governing authority recognized by the NC Addictions Specialist Professional Practice Board will be considered:
