As one of two Controllers, you’ll be a key member of the leadership team responsible for leading, developing, and driving the global accounting and financial reporting activities of New Relic’s 135 Relic strong accounting function. You'll help develop and strengthen collaborative relationships with colleagues in business, FP&A, HR and Benefits, IT BA, Tax, Legal, IR, and... Treasury. You’ll also be a key team member helping to identify and drive process improvement and digital transformation opportunities in finance. You'll help to oversee internal and external reporting, audits, systems, and policies. This role requires deep technical expertise and the ability to solve complex problems across diverse subject areas.
The ability to ensure proper accounting treatment and accurate financial results while also maintaining effective internal controls is critical to this role. As a Controller, you’ll also be a subject matter resource for existing and emerging accounting policies and principles.
This strategic, yet hands-on role, will report to the Chief Accounting Officer. You will be a key player in driving the financial success of the organization by building – and sustaining – a world-class finance team.

What you'll do
• Contribute to the planning, direction, and coordination of all accounting and reporting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable tax, payroll, equity accounting, treasury, and consolidation activities
• Responsible for the month-end closing process, including account/variance analysis and reconciliation
• Provide oversight for accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate US GAAP, SEC, and regulatory requirements
• Participate in regulatory reporting, including tax planning and compliance across various jurisdictions, both US and foreign tax filings
• Partner with the FP&A team on the annual budget, monthly forecast, various expense analytics and other internal reporting activities
• Help to ensure New Relic financial statements comply with US GAAP and SEC requirements
• Assist with the drafting and/or review of technical accounting positions and policy memos as necessary
• Stay current on the latest FASB, AICPA, and SEC guidance
• Help to coordinate annual financial statement audits with external auditors, both domestic and international
• Participate in the development and maintenance of internal control documentation
• Help drive the identification of inefficiencies and opportunities for process improvement, optimize the ERP and other accounting systems and tools, and help lead the implementation of best practices for all the accounting processes to scale the team
• Partner effectively with management team, FP&A, and business to provide advice on financial implications of business activities
• Own resolution of accounting questions/issues including adoption of new accounting standards as necessary
• Develop a culture of continuous improvement in the accounting function and support the culture of New Relic, providing assistance and direction as required to improve effectiveness and overall performance
• Lead, retain, and develop a high performing accounting team and support their growth and professional development
This role requires
• Bachelor of Science in Accounting or Finance
• Active Certified Public Accountant credentials
• 10+ years of progressive experience in senior accounting leadership roles at some combination of public companies, late-stage startups, and/or public accounting firms
• Hands on experience with NetSuite or equivalent ERP, Coupa, Workiva, Xactly, and Blackline
• Strong analytical and solid technical accounting skills, including ability to independently analyze transactions and contracts and document the related accounting analysis under US GAAP and SEC guidance
• Exemplary interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills as demonstrated by the ability to land complex concepts across multiple audiences
• Ability to work cross-functionally to scale processes and support business needs
• Ability to both see the big picture and dive into the details
• Proven track record managing, developing, and leading remote/distributed teams across different time zones
