The City of New Orleans VISTA program is implemented by the Office of Mayor LaToya Cantrell and Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. The City is seeking passionate individuals to build capacity to break the cycle of poverty and empower our community. New Orleans is a welcoming city with a unique culture, plentiful natural spaces, and a reputation for hospitable and friendly... residents.
NOLA Ready is the City of New Orleans Emergency Preparedness Campaign, which shares information with New Orleans residents, businesses, and community groups about how to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. In addition to crisis communications and year-round community outreach, this team manages the NOLA Ready Volunteer Corps which supports on-the-ground emergency operations and resilience efforts.
The VISTA project will expand the reach of NOLA Ready’s emergency preparedness initiatives within vulnerable communities, including New Orleans’ low-income, BIPOC, and elderly communities, by increasing community awareness and volunteer capacity. The VISTA will develop outreach strategies to build relationships with key community leaders and organizations, create and distribute appropriate and engaging outreach materials, design and give emergency preparedness presentations, and assist in the recruitment of a diverse volunteer corps.
In grey skies and blue skies, VISTAs will learn about emergency preparedness in formal settings (ex: trainings) and informal settings (ex: during planning sessions or response). VISTAs also have the opportunity to network and collaborate with leaders in the disaster space as well as with community leaders.
If you are interested in serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA, please note the following:
AmeriCorps is a national service year requiring 12 months of service, full time work hours (M-F, 9-5, in-person) and flexible hours on occasion.
Team members must either be fully vaccinated or present a negative test every week to work at City Hall.
For their national service, members receive a bi-weekly living allowance of $575, reduction of education costs, health insurance, and enriching career experience. Upon completion of service, members will also receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $6,345 or an end-of-service cash stipend of up to $1,800.

The City of New Orleans VISTA program is implemented by the Office of Mayor LaToya Cantrell. The City is seeking passionate individuals to build capacity to break the cycle of poverty and empower our community. New Orleans is a welcoming city with a unique culture, plentiful outdoor spaces, and a reputation for hospitable and friendly residents.
Project Why is designed to address challenges to... implementing policy priorities due to a deep mistrust of government and lack of meaningful feedback loop between the City and our residents. It is an iterative design process that engages heavily with stakeholders to collect observations, data, and other important revelations about individual’s lived experiences and perspectives, in order to design, test and improve interactions with residents in a way that is trauma-informed, collaborative, inclusive, and equitable.
As the VISTA Project Why Visual Design Associate, you will work with the project’s VISTA Operations member to develop a Universal Design, highly-accessible user interface strategy and design, including a “Visual Cues Library” to help address the needs of a population with extremely low rates of literacy among adults and a growing population of limited English proficient (LEP) individuals. Developing the user interface standards and visual library establishes a new vernacular of non-verbal cues for use across City operations, processes, and communications that are intuitive, self-explanatory, and inclusive.
This project will support efforts to strengthen our community and engage with every resident, with an awareness of diversity, equity and inclusion, by removing the institutionalized barriers that disproportionately impact the ability of certain populations to engage with government. Your involvement in this program will serve to move New Orleans forward in transforming how government understands and responds to the needs of our residents and businesses.

The City seeks passionate individuals to enhance capacity for program approaches that address inequities in our community. New Orleans is a welcoming city with a unique culture, natural outdoor spaces, and a reputation for hospitable and friendly residents.
The New Orleans... Health Department's mission is to promote, protect, and improve the health of all in our community through equitable policies, programs, and partnerships. We achieve this with community-based initiatives focused on behavioral health, sexual violence, and transportation safety, among others. We partner with other government agencies, non-profit organizations, and community leaders throughout New Orleans to ensure our work reaches all residents.
This VISTA Service Year is dedicated to improving the Public Health Emergencies and the Environmental Health Unit's capacity to collect, manage, and disseminate relevant data. This project will include guiding the improvement of data collection across various activities, developing a database that can support data analysis, and designing dashboards and other data visualization approaches for disseminating findings.
This project is an excellent opportunity to be at the forefront of a critical challenge to many public service programs – the ability to utilize data for decision-making appropriately. Through this project, you will get insight into the inner workings of local government, as well engaging in a unit that aims to address a wide range of dynamic public health challenges (e.g., homelessness, climate change, pandemics).
