Position Summary

The selected applicant for this position will be assigned to the District Project Development Section and report to the Highway Design Section Supervisor. He/ She will function as a Design Team Leader and will be responsible for preparing and reviewing plans, specifications, and cost estimates for roadway and bridge projects within the advertising program. Duties will involve the direct supervision of technical and professional staff involved in the preparation and/or review of plans to ensure compliance with MassDOT design standards, policies, and directives, preparing written reports, attending public hearings and meetings, maintaining records, liaison with other sections, government agencies, public groups, and performing related work as required.

In addition to the minimum entrance requirements for this position it is preferred that candidates have experience in the area of highway design including design of roadway reconstruction, intersection improvement, and resurfacing projects. They should have knowledge of MassDOT highway and bridge standard specifications and estimating procedures and be experienced in the use of Civil 3D highway design and drafting software.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Prepare and/or review plans, specifications, and cost estimates for engineering projects such as two-lane highway projects in a rural or suburban setting or multi-span bridges of standardized design.
• Participate ln the planning, design and technical review or capital budget building projects.
• Prepare state highway layouts, including calculations and boundary descriptions: check land court petitions, orders of takings and easements and advise the Attorney General when a court appearance is required.
• Civil Engineers may work in an office or outside in all types of weather and under exposure to such hazardous conditions as those found on construction sites and may travel for job related purposes.

This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired into the Unit E collective bargaining unit at MassDOT. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts: 1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee's first paycheck. 2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee’s probationary period.
