Manager for IDEA, Northeastern University's student-led venture
accelerator! IDEA has worked with 2000+ concepts, launched 105
ventures, and helped ventures raise $650+ million in external
funding. We want your help to empower even more ideas get off the
ground!
This is a hybrid position, 3-4 days on the Boston campus. The
salary range is 50,520 - 64,415 USD.
In line with Northeastern University's commitment to hands-on
“learning by doing” philosophy, IDEA is student-led. This means
there is a team of 40+ student leaders (https://www.northeastern.edu/idea/about-us/)
who manage and coordinate most aspects of programming and
operations. These students decide the overall vision and mission of
the organization and determine execution strategy. The IDEA Program
Manager's role will be to act as an advisor, advocate and ally for
the student leaders, advise and support the ventures, and provide
the logistical and operational support necessary to ensure IDEA
continues supporting Northeastern innovation.
At IDEA, our philosophy is that entrepreneurship is for everyone
and should be made accessible and straightforward. We firmly
believe that students and alumni have fantastic ideas to change the
world, and we want to empower our innovators to make that change
happen. Our community members range from individuals who have never
considered themselves entrepreneurs or innovators but have an idea
they want to develop, to seasoned veterans working on several ideas
at once. We provide support in the form of an asynchronous stepwise
and structured introductory entrepreneurship curriculum,
mentorship, community events, and funding ($280,000+ in equity-free
funding given out every year!!). Our asynchronous resources are
videos, worksheets, and templates that individuals can go through
on their own time to develop their ventures at a pace that best
suits their lifestyle. IDEA participants have the option to attend
a variety of entrepreneurship development and informational events
hosted within the greater Northeastern entrepreneurship community
to develop their skills and meet a network of like-minded
innovators. IDEA provides personal connections and knowledge via a
matching program that pairs individuals with coaches that provide
specific venture feedback and encouragement, and an in-house IDEA
Legal Officer who provides legal information as ventures start
developing.
IDEA doesn't just develop ventures, but exists to help Northeastern
students and alumni develop as entrepreneurial doers, leaders, and
thinkers. We provide tools and space for participants to become
comfortable in the innovation space as they take their ideas from
concept to launch.
The IDEA Program Manager is instrumental in creating a welcoming
and thoughtful environment where students and alumni feel supported
and seen as they navigate their innovation journey. As the main
staff member of IDEA, the Program Manager will be a key support
figure for IDEA participants and will serve as a prominent part of
their time in the organization. Starting a venture can be
overwhelming and scary, and this is especially true for our target
audience of those who are just entering the entrepreneurship space.
It is essential that the Program Manager be thoughtful, empathetic,
encouraging, and patient, and act as a guide so that fledgling
entrepreneurs do not get overwhelmed, discouraged, and ultimately
decide they “don't have what it takes” and drop out of the
system.
We see ourselves as an organization that lowers the barrier of
entry into entrepreneurship to make it accessible, creating
opportunities for individuals to try it out in a structured, guided
way. The IDEA Program Manager is a fantastic position for someone
who is interested in and passionate about working closely with
students and alumni who have dreams and drive to create change in
the world, but perhaps not the support system to do so.
We are looking for a very organized individual who enjoys
interacting with undergraduate and graduate students, advising,
working with others, and loves a good spreadsheet. The Program
Manager will be responsible for overseeing the IDEA student
management team and working with fellow faculty and staff to ensure
high quality operation of the IDEA Venture Accelerator
program.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Supervising the venture incubation process guided by the Ready,
Set, Go stage framework (https://www.northeastern.edu/idea/the-process)
used in our curriculum
• Serving as the public face of the IDEA community, managing
internal and external stakeholders such as donors, investors,
alumni, and collaborators
• Actively maintaining and building relationship with alumni
• Maintaining and improving systems related to the program
operations and impact reporting
• Hiring and managing student IDEA leadership positions in
partnership with department staff
• Coordinating and overseeing team of volunteer coaches that
advise ventures, ensuring alignment and standardization across all
individuals
• Managing and supporting key events such as new venture
orientation, entrepreneurship content workshops, office hours,
venture grant applications, and pitch evaluations. Please note:
These activities are carried out by a combination of students and
staff. The Program Manager will not need to do each item directly
(Eg. Will not be running workshop on marketing or judging a pitch),
but is responsible for coordinating task force teams and oversight
of all activity
IDEA is housed within the Northeastern University Center for
Entrepreneurship Education (NUCEE, (https://entrepreneurship.northeastern.edu/)
in the D'Amore-McKim School of Business (https://damore-mckim.northeastern.edu/).
The IDEA Program Manager will work closely with NUCEE staff
alongside entrepreneurship partners across the University and
report to the Mosaic Associate Director.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to track multiple
moving parts
• Commitment to record keeping and tracking
• Ability to communicate complex concepts across a range of
internal and external stakeholders including donors, investors,
alumni, and collaborators
• Thoughtful and empathetic leader with a demonstrated commitment
to issues surrounding DEI
• Experience working with undergraduate and graduate
students.
• Mindset to be an advocate, ally, and cheerleader for our IDEA
community members
• Desire to learn about startup work environment/culture, venture
incubation programs, and/or venture capital
