Objective of the role

Our ideal candidate is passionate about working with community members and
open source contributors to SUSE’s cloud native projects and the talented
engineers, technical writers, and developer advocates at SUSE building and
extending those projects. They will have open source development experience, a passion for community engagement, and experience working collaboratively across teams and disciplines.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will work with a team of talented and motivated engineers,
technical writers, developer advocates, and managers to promote community
engagement with SUSE’s cloud native projects, which include Rancher, k3s, Rancher Desktop, Kubewarden, and many other projects.

You will:
• Triage GitHub issues opened by community members, providing best effort assistance, document bug reports and route them to the appropriate engineering team, and collect feedback to summarize and present to stakeholders.
• Review pull requests contributed by community members, ensure code quality and alignment with overall project goals, test community contributions, and collaborate with the relevant engineering team to merge them.
• Maintain a visible community presence and serve as a resource in the Rancher user Slack and forums.
• Provide engineering support and guidance to SUSE developer advocates and technical writers.
• Demonstrate best practices in software engineering, open source collaboration, and community participation.
• Hold regular open office hours, present at conferences and meetups, and represent SUSE in the open source cloud native community.
• Promote an inclusive and welcoming community around SUSE’s open source cloud native projects.

About you

You are passionate about open source, cloud native technologies, and delivering an engaging experience for community members and contributors. You are excited to build bridges between community members, contributors, teams inside SUSE, and upstream cloud native projects. You can help drive excitement and energy around SUSE’s open source projects in the broader cloud native community.

Education and Experience Required
• Bachelor’s degree of Computer Science or equivalent experience.
• 2+ years of software engineering experience building and delivering enterprise open source software.
• 2+ years of leadership in an open source community.

Knowledge and Skills
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Advanced communication skills catered to a wide variety of audiences,
• including mastery of English. (e.g. written, verbal, presentation)
• Advanced multi-tasking and prioritization skills
• Knowledge of Kubernetes and other container runtime technologies
• Knowledge of Linux
• Knowledge of Go
• Familiar with GitHub
• Experience with GitHub Actions and Docusaurus a plus
