Job Summary
The Child Development Center in the College of Health is seeking multiple Head Teachers. These are full-time (1.00 FTE ), 9-month, professional faculty positions.
The Head Teacher will establish a safe prekindergarten environment, teach the class of young children, conduct education and development screenings and assessments, identify, address, and track early education goals for individual children. They will conduct parent and teacher conferences and home visits required by the center model for the purposes of screening assessment, support, and goal setting and for sharing information on parenting, home/center activities, educational strategies, and developmental progress in conjunction with families.
The Head Teacher will be responsible for modeling effective, developmentally appropriate teaching strategies for HDFS 430, implementing one prekindergarten class of 20 children, addressing the early education requirements of the Child Development Lab’s Oregon Head Start Prekindergarten Program, and meeting state licensing and national accreditation regulations.

Key Responsibilities
60% – Teaching:
• Oversee and mentor student teachers in two sections of HDFS 430. Provide leadership, training and support to teaching partners and volunteers in the classroom.
• Participate with the Child Development Lab’s Education Services Team to implement the early education requirements of the Child Development Center’s Oregon Head Start Prekindergarten Program, licensing, and accreditation.
• Address the Head Start Performance Standards related to Child Development & Education in support of children’s readiness for kindergarten. Conduct developmental screening and assessments, identify, and address early education needs, share progress reports with families, provide parent and teacher conferences and classroom meetings, track activities and submit reports.
• Provide a safe and consistent care environment by demonstrating appropriate, effective group and individual management skills. Establish a consistent schedule that includes flexibility to meet the changing needs of the children. Individualize child and group activities to reflect the unique needs, strengths, and development stage of all children in care. Encourage experimentation, exploration, problem solving, creativity, socialization, and choice-making: ask open-ended questions and listen respectfully to verbal and nonverbal communication. Integrate all Head Start components into work with children (education, health, parent involvement, social services)
• Encourage and participate in activities that foster an environment that is diverse, equitable, inclusive, and fosters a sense of belonging for both students, families and co-workers.
• Assess individual and group needs, attending to children’s interests, strengths, and goals. Establish daily and weekly goals which reflect individual and group needs. Structure environments/curriculum within HS guidelines responsive to developmental task acquisition and promotion of age-appropriate participation and independence.
• Prepare materials to support activity plans; change and create learning areas as needed; delegate tasks as appropriate. Adapt curriculum to address and meet individual goals for children, including Individual Family Service Plan ( IFSP ) needs and goals for children with disabilities.
• Write on-going anecdotal records and observations of children. Maintain up-to-date child files to include observations, screenings, assessments, individual child plans, family contact forms and consultant recommendations.
35% – Head Start/Family Partnership:
• Provide an atmosphere that promotes and reinforces parental involvement. Communicate with parents on a regular basis and work with families in a positive, respectful, non-judgmental way to create facilitative and supportive relationships. Engage center families in on-going, informal information-sharing pertinent to their child’s ongoing needs and developmental changes. Conduct periodic conferences with parents to formally review child’s progress and set goals.
• Conduct home visits required by center model for the purposes of screening, assessment, support, and goal setting and for sharing information on parenting, home/center activities, educational strategies, and developmental progress in conjunction with families. Work with parents to establish and maintain regular attendance for their child. Provide information relative to Head Start health and nutrition requirements; work with Health Advocate to support families in completing health screenings.
• Assist families in the development of family partnership goals; provide timely and relevant referrals; monitor progress on the goals and other necessary follow up. Document and maintain family information in children’s database and family contact record keeping system for assigned families.
• Maintain monthly contacts to promote partnership and provide for regular communication, including facilitating and conducting monthly parent committee activities and participating in monthly parent meetings.
• Arrange for transportation for child/parent to appointments and meetings.
• Work collaboratively with other staff members to plan for and deliver quality services. Collaborate with special needs consultants for goal setting, planning, and reviewing children’s progress. Attend IFSP meetings. Work with community partners to identify, track, and refer children to appropriate consultants, specialist or agency when needed.
5% – Other Duties as Assigned:
• Represent the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences, the Child Development Laboratory and the OSU Oregon Head Start Prekindergarten Program in community service and advisory groups, serving as an advocate for the needs of low-income children and families.
• Attend and participate in program meetings as requested by supervisor.
• Complete all required professional development training, including but not limited to 24 hours of annual training (8 hours of which must be in child development or early childhood education).
• Complete all areas of responsibility in compliance with program code of conduct and confidentiality policies. Be a contributory team member in a positive/productive manner. Demonstrate commitment to mission, values, and policies in the performance of daily duties.
• Other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
What You Will Need
• Bachelor’s degree in child development, Early Childhood Education, or Elementary Education or Human Development & Family Sciences with coursework in Child Development and Early Childhood Education.
• Two years teaching experience working with children ages 3-5 in a developmentally appropriate early childhood classroom setting.
• Experience developing curriculum and planning and scheduling appropriate activities. Ability to maintain educational record keeping systems.
• Sensitivity to individual and group needs of adults and children in target area; knowledge of family dynamics.
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships, communicate, and problem-solve appropriately with children, parents, staff and public.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate in a manner that shows respect and inclusivity for all co-workers and internal customers.
• Enrollment in the Oregon Registry Online ( ORO ) with a Step 8 or higher. Current Food Handler’s card.
• OCC approved health and safety training within 30 days of hire.
• Must have or obtain Blood Borne Pathogen training and infant/child First Aid/ CPR certification within 90 days of hire.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
The incumbent must also successfully complete a criminal background check screening from the Oregon Child Care, Early Learning Division, and be deemed fit for duty at placement and while serving in the position.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

The incumbent will occasionally be required to lift and carry children and equipment weighing approximately 40 pounds in a safe manner.
The incumbent must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle to conduct occasional home visits in the general Corvallis area.

• Support an atmosphere that promotes and reinforces parental involvement in the classroom.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The work schedule for this position is Monday - Friday, 8-4:30. Occasional evening work may be required.This position requires repetitive bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, climbing and grasping to perform cleaning duties, assist children, and other duties as assigned, and sitting (on the floor, small chairs, and/or outdoors) as needed to attend to childs needs. Must be able to rapidly survey environment and move quickly to respond to children to ensure their safety or the safety of other children. Occasionally required to lift up to 50 pounds.Must be able to respond appropriately (both mentally and physically) to an emergency or a crisis.

This Education Program Assistant 2 (EPA2) position is with the Extension Family and Community Health (FCH) program, affiliated with OSU's College of Health. This position works with the SNAP-ED and EFNEP Latin Heritage Cultural Workgroup project serving Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties and is based at the OSU Extension office in Portland. This position has a priority designation for working with Spanish speaking audiences through the utilization of bilingual/bi-literate and multi-cultural skills.
Extension programs in the College of Health align toward a common vision of lifelong health and well-being for individuals, families, and communities. The central purpose of this position is to extend the knowledge and research of OSU to the communities of Oregon in a manner that is responsive to local needs and respectful of local norms and culture. The incumbent joins a network of campus-and community-based Extension faculty and staff who share this responsibility for community engagement.
Purpose of the Position
The Education Program Assistant 2 position is part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - Education (SNAP-Ed) Program, a federally funded nutrition education program targeting SNAP eligible audiences, and the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), a federal nutrition education program targeting families with young children. Interventions include hands-on learner-centered direct education in both programs, as well as community-based work related to policy, systems, and environmental change as part of SNAP-Ed. Programs are designed to promote healthy eating habits and a physically active lifestyle.
All programming is done in collaboration with community partners, such as schools, food banks and pantries, and government and non-profit agencies. Funding is provided in part by USDA's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) through a contract with Oregon Department of Human Services, and through EFNEP federal funds.
The EPA2 is responsible for developing programs and collaborative community partnerships independently, initiating program changes with the input of state and county program coordinators, and providing lead work to volunteers.
This position will work under the supervision of the Managing Faculty Member. Programs are implemented in a manner that measures impact, fosters program improvement and strengthens community connections. This position requires travel to various sites within the Metro area.

40% - Nutrition Education Delivery
• Collaborates with managing faculty and program team to determine overall program goals and objectives. Works independently to deliver non-credit educational programs in English and Spanish, using OSU Extension Service/SNAP-Ed/EFNEP approved curricula, materials and information. Independently develops written materials and activities to supplement curriculum as requested. Conducts educational presentations at fairs and community events. This will require driving/travel to various county sites to deliver programming, and the ability to transport educational materials.
• Follow OSU and division brand guidelines, digital publishing standards and digital contact management data integrity practices for programmatic communications, marketing and engagement.
• Provides classroom management practices, as necessary.
20% - Nutrition Education - Planning, Preparing, and Evaluating
• Collaborates with faculty and program team to identify and independently engage local partners and stakeholders in community assessment, program design, implementation and evaluation of programs. Initiates program changes as needed with input from program team.
• Promotes nutrition education programming in English and Spanish, using mixed-media in conjunction with a faculty member and program team, i.e., giving public presentations in person, radio, or television.
• Use technology as a tool to increase the reach and impact of program delivery.
• Develops and maintains educational content for displays and exhibits.
• Engages community partners, volunteers and community members in a culturally responsive manner.
• Verifies group/class set up and nutrition topics/lessons with site contact and assists in preparation and ordering of instructional supplies needed for classes. Assists with the coordination and training of community and program volunteers. Assists in assembling materials needed for classes and other nutrition education activities. Purchases appropriate materials for educational activities, including ingredients for food preparation and tasting.
• Participates in evaluation of program effectiveness.

This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Education Program Assistant 2 position for the Division of Extension and Engagement's Extension Family and Community Health (FCH) program at Oregon State University (OSU). This Education Program Assistant 2 (EPA2) position is with the Extension Family and Community Health (FCH) program, affiliated with OSU's College of Health. This position works with the SNAP-ED and EFNEP Latin Heritage Cultural Workgroup project serving Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties and is based at the OSU Extension office in Portland. Extension programs in the College of Health align toward a common vision of lifelong health and well-being for individuals, families, and communities. The central purpose of this position is to extend the knowledge and research of OSU to the communities of Oregon in a manner that is responsive to local needs and respectful of local norms and culture. The incumbent joins a network of campus-and community-based Extension faculty and staff who share this responsibility for community engagement.
Purpose of the Position
The Education Program Assistant 2 position is part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - Education (SNAP-Ed) Program, a federally funded nutrition education program targeting SNAP eligible audiences, and the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), a federal nutrition education program targeting families with young children. Interventions include hands-on learner-centered direct education in both programs, as well as community-based work related to policy, systems, and environmental change as part of SNAP-Ed. Programs are designed to promote healthy eating habits and a physically active lifestyle.
All programming is done in collaboration with community partners, such as schools, food banks and pantries, and government and non-profit agencies. Funding is provided in part by USDA's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) through a contract with Oregon Department of Human Services, and through EFNEP federal funds.
The EPA2 is responsible for developing programs and collaborative community partnerships independently, initiating program changes with the input of state and county program coordinators, and providing lead work to volunteers.
This position will work under the supervision of the Managing Faculty Member. Programs are implemented in a manner that measures impact, fosters program improvement and strengthens community connections. This position requires travel to various sites within the Metro area.
