Major Duties and Responsibilities:
• Serve as a material balance area representative to:
• Ensure completeness of material characterization and quantification
• Plan and oversee material transfers and inventory changes
• Address atypical circumstances or materials
• Oversee the tamper indicating device program implementation
• Ensure compliance with physical security and material protection practices
• Review and update relevant training documents and procedures
• Maintain calibration of relevant equipment
• Perform NMC&A surveilances, assessments, and audits
• Lead and perform engineering calculations, prepare specifications, perform analyses and testing of equipment, perform readiness assessments, issue reports and maintain related data.
• Provide imaginative, thorough engineering solutions to a wide range of complex, ambiguous, and/or difficult problems.

You will utilize your strong mathematical skills to develop model-data integration methods using machine learning, and will develop new functions and representations of ecological processes in models over a variety of spatial and temporal scales. You will publish your findings in top-quality journals, and you will have the opportunity to participate in the generation of novel research concepts.

The Communications Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire a Protocol Officer. This position is key in enhancing ORNL’s role as a valued member of the community through execution of visits by dignitaries to ORNL and through strategic internal and external communications. Duties related to the planning, coordination, and execution of visits by dignitaries to ORNL are based upon the station of the visitor, purpose of the visit, alignment with Lab priorities, and connection to current local and national events. Responsibilities may also include tasks such as executing or overseeing preparation of materials including writing/editing, graphic design, and web services, supporting community outreach activities, coordinating Lab events, and other Communications-related functions as assigned.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
• Implement official protocol principles, including DOE guidance, to plan, coordinate, and execute visits involving federal, state, and local government officials and VIPs
• Plan, coordinate, and manage the execution of itineraries including social events, ceremonies, briefings, transportation, billeting, communication, security, and other services as directed
• Plan and develop appropriate presentations, remarks, etc.
• Plan, coordinate, and manage the execution of conferences, workshops, and special events as directed
• Support the Laboratory’s programs and tours for community groups and leadership development organizations
• Provide strategic protocol and communications support to ORNL organizations and projects at the lab-wide level
• Promote awareness of the Laboratory through participation at community events
• Collaborate with the communication leads matrixed across the ORNL research directorates to support the communications of the Department of Energy (DOE) to the public, local and state governments, other federal agencies, elected officials, international partners, and the scientific community
• Prepare, edit, and maintain appropriate project material. Edit both technical and general-science related materials for content, consistency, clarity, grammar, and syntax to ensure compliance with customer requirements
• Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.
Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing or a business-related field
• Minimum 8 years of related experience in communications, government/stakeholder relations, or event planning
Preferred Qualifications :
• An understanding of ORNL’s programs and a familiarity with the region’s local, state, and federal civic and business stakeholders is desired.
• Previous experience with DOE is preferred.
• Excellent personal, oral, and written communication skills are required.
• Excellent presentation skills with the ability to confidently speak in front of large audiences while representing UT-Battelle on tours and at public events
• Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures of Protocol as well as the services and courtesies afforded to distinguished visitors in planning and developing itineraries and social events is required.
• Must possess the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
• Ability to work both independently and with all levels of researchers and staff in a team-based environment
• Ability to learn and assimilate Laboratory-related information quickly and accurately, translating complex technical language and concepts into easily comprehensible ideas for non-specialists
• Must possess strong problem-solving skills as well as the ability to develop and implement real-time solutions efficiently, effectively, and discreetly
Q or L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
