Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking nuclear material accountability engineers for our world class radioisotope program. Supporting the largest radioisotope production and research portfolio within the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science for Isotope R&D and Production, as well as extensive isotope production programs for the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy and National Nuclear Security Administration, this position will grant you the opportunity to work with rare nuclear materials and ensure the safe and effective execution of nuclear materials processing. This position resides in the Process Coordination Group (PCG) within the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division (RSTD) of the Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED) at ORNL The highly accomplished staff within the ISED use the unique facilities at ORNL, including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (REDC), to produce a variety of important medical, scientific, and industrial radioisotopes. These include several alpha emitting radioisotopes either deployed or under clinical trial for treatment of cancer (e.g., Ac-225, Ac-227); heavy actinides Bk-249, Es-254, and Fm-257 for fundamental chemistry research and new element discovery; Cf-252 for neutron emitting applications; and Pu-238 for space exploration. The bulk of the work carried out by the PCG resides in the REDC, a category two nuclear facility, and is performed within heavily shielded processing hot cells..

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
• Serve as a material balance area representative to:
• Ensure completeness of material characterization and quantification
• Plan and oversee material transfers and inventory changes
• Address atypical circumstances or materials
• Oversee the tamper indicating device program implementation
• Ensure compliance with physical security and material protection practices
• Review and update relevant training documents and procedures
• Maintain calibration of relevant equipment
• Perform NMC&A surveilances, assessments, and audits
• Lead and perform engineering calculations, prepare specifications, perform analyses and testing of equipment, perform readiness assessments, issue reports and maintain related data.
• Provide imaginative, thorough engineering solutions to a wide range of complex, ambiguous, and/or difficult problems.

Basic Qualifications:
• A Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field, and a minimum of 5 years of related experience is required. Work towards a relevant advanced degree may be applied towards up to 2 year of experience.
• Demonstrated experience working with or around nuclear materials.
• Proven communication skills, including technical writing
• Experience in maintaining high levels of process documentation for safety, security, and/or quality

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong multidisciplinary expertise and quantitative skills. Their research will involve developing improved Earth system model representations of above- and below-ground interactions and evaluating these models in the context of changing environmental conditions and disturbance. Possible model development topics include root allocation, phenology and function; explicit representation of microbial communities and soil carbon cycling processes; and linking these processes to vegetation demography models. Models will be developed and validated using observations (for example from AmeriFlux eddy covariance towers, trait databases such as FRED, TRY and LeafWeb) and from large-scale ecosystem experiments (e.g. SPRUCE) and observation networks (e.g., NGEE Arctic).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Identification of model biases through model-data integration and development of improved process algorithms is a primary goal of the ORNL team. You will utilize your strong mathematical skills to develop model-data integration methods using machine learning, and will develop new functions and representations of ecological processes in models over a variety of spatial and temporal scales. You will publish your findings in top-quality journals, and you will have the opportunity to participate in the generation of novel research concepts. 

Basic Qualifications:
• 2 years of post-Ph.D. experience
• Ph.D. in a discipline relevant to terrestrial ecosystems (e.g., ecology, engineering, atmospheric science, computational science, biogeochemistry, chemistry or closely related scientific discipline)
• Experience with modeling the terrestrial cycling of carbon, energy and nutrients

PSD is home to highly integrated basic and applied research programs whose research encompasses foundational science in chemistry, materials science, nanoscience, and physics. PSD is responsible for several Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science programs at ORNL including Basic Energy Sciences (BES), Nuclear Physics (NP), and High Energy Physics (HEP). The Computational Sciences and Engineering Division (https://www.ornl.gov/division/csed) in the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a senior scientist to lead a world-class research group in Quantum Communications and Networking (QCN) within the Quantum Information Science (QIS) Section. The QIS section includes more than 25 full-time scientists carrying out interdisciplinary, collaborative research in fundamental and applied quantum computing, communications, and sensing. With substantial institutional investments in equipment and facilities, as well as recent and expected increases in federal funding from the Department of Energy (DOE) and other federal agencies, the QCN group is positioned to experience rapid growth. Building on this solid foundation, the successful candidate will develop capabilities in the group to address key quantum communications and networking research, from foundational principles to device engineering, fabrication, and implementation. In addition, the candidate will oversee the group’s science agenda, will lead the effort to respond to new funding opportunities, and will guide the ongoing growth and development of the research staff that will carry out that agenda. The group carries out research in both continuous variable and discrete variable quantum information science. Further, the group contains extensive expertise and experience in quantum entanglement. With these capabilities, the group has been successful in capitalizing on recent strong public interest in quantum information science. A successful group leader will build upon this foundation to cement the group’s and the larger section’s status as world-class research organizations as the group develops quantum memory, transduction and ultimately quantum repeaters.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

The major duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Oversee high quality research in areas related to quantum communications and networking.
• Collaborate with scientists in the Physics Division, Computational Sciences and Engineering Division, and other organizations at the laboratory to provide a unified vision and execution plan for experimental quantum sensing and computing networks
• Collaborate with scientists outside of the laboratory to advance the scientific mission of the group, laboratory, the Department of Energy and other sponsors.
• Mentor early career research staff, postdocs, and students
• Interact with the appropriate program offices and other agencies to develop and maintain program funding for basic and applied research in relevant areas.
• Develop new research directions as a basis of continued funding and the overall health of the group.
• Represent group-level work to review committees and outside bodies as appropriate.
• Manage staff within the group, including the selection and retention of highly qualified staff; the development of staff capabilities; and ensuring that staff members are effectively utilized, rewarded, and motivated.
• Write peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals for internal and external release and represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums.

Basic Qualifications:
• A PhD in a field of study related to quantum information science, such as physics, optics, computer science, or electrical engineering with a demonstrated understanding of the tasks associated with experimental physics research.
• A minimum of 6 years related experience. The group leader’s expertise should complement and reinforce areas already represented in the QIS section (see https://www.ornl.gov/division/csed/quantum-information).

Preferred Qualifications:
• 5 years of experience in program management and/or research management at a large research institution, or government entity.
• Experience with building and operating quantum communications and networking experiments based on continuous and discrete variable optical encodings
• Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with senior levels of client management and others involved in technical endeavors.
• Demonstrated ability to write research plans and proposals and to project a vision for future research relevant to quantum information science.
• A successful record of developing research partnerships and collaborative relationships with universities, industry, and research laboratories.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently, outstanding written and oral communication skills, good organizational skills.
• Ability to obtain a Department of Energy security clearance.

The project will require you to instrument systems, wire the instruments to the data acquisition system, and operate the environmental chambers according to the test plan. Troubleshooting equipment issues related to charge or airflow is often required in addition to identifying issues with the test setup that may result in erroneous data. The successful candidate will be capable of reading piping and instrumentation diagrams.

• A high school diploma / GED and experience with HVAC equipment or with operating environmental chambers is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
